When I chose to re-enter the church. I was looking for community and fellowship, without the institutional hullabaloo that seems to be crystallizing in many churches. I was deeply moved by the pastors sermon about corruption within the church, as he bookended how we as a church can make a difference. He has also espoused queer affirmation theology, which is a radical departure from the institutional church. The church itself is modest but has a lot of soul, and a large contingent of dedicated members who bring so much life into it. Within its congregation is a member who is 103 years old and just as lively as if she were 20! The pipe organ plays every Saturday and this church is starting up its choir pretty soon. I love the music. Brings me peace of mind in troubling times such as these. There is no expectation of belief. Only acceptance and fellowship. If you are uncertain about everything this is your church!

Mom's Church SITREP…read more So when I am committed to a full weekend with the mom, it sometimes means a Sabbath morning excursion to the church where her official SDA membership is registered. I make no pretense to being a fan of organized religion anymore. However, having said that, there is a lot of positive interaction that can be achieved through community with different churches, including this one. THE SETUP Ironically, my exposure to this particular church predates my mother's in fact. I first came to this church back in 1988 when it hosted the Association of Adventist Forums (AAF) meetings. AAF is a philosophically more progressive element of the SDA Church, though it doesn't really engender any official status with the SDA Church. Shortly around this time, I moved to California with my then-wife, but humorously enough, my mother then maintained her SDA membership in this church. CHURCHY FUNCTIONS The church structure itself is really quite elegant. It has a lot of beautiful rooms and space, including the large sanctuary where the worship services take place as well as the subterranean level where a lot of Sabbath School classes (before the main service at 11am) transpire. They have some pretty kick-ass potlucks, I must say, and when it was my mom's time (since she is a deaconess) to help with the organization, she really puts on a great spread of food for all the members. VISITORS Since I grew up in the SDA Church and went to SDA Academy and College, I have a lot of visitors from both these phases in my life whom will pay a visit to our family in Seattle. This is the church we will are most inclined to bring our guests with our mom to. THE LOWDOWN A pleasant church experience if your interests run this direction.

Before walking though the doors, I heard about St. Luke's homeless programs and that the church lost 90% of its membership around 6 years ago when it moved forward with the Episcopal Church, ordaining and performing marriages of LGBTQ folks-- and has slowly been building its membership back up. From the first moment, I saw that the community is loving, varies in age, curious in their faith, and justice-concerned. They literally whooped in celebration when my partner and I announced our engagement. I really enjoy the succinct, rewarding, affecting sermons--my partner particularly loves the weekly communion and the opportunity to volunteer in the kitchen. They offer breakfast to the homeless from 7-9am Monday through Friday. It's powered largely by the passion for service of elderly parishioners - especially those who don't get bogged down in church politics and simply work to serve the poor.

In mid 2021, the board of my organization decided that we did not need to have a rented office after 20 years. They realize we could move to being a remote office instead and that absolutely excited me! It's worked out really well. Especially because Calvin Presbyterian Church allows us to use their space for our staff meetings and other important gatherings. We use the church space maybe once or twice a month. It has worked out beautifully. Great people, wonderful support, and access to space that we need. Calvin Presbyterian is really making a difference for my nonprofit.

I attended Sunday school here preschool through high school. Prior to high school I also took part in the logos program. My family and I volunteered for various occasions over the years including helping with the homeless encampment named Tent City. Sunday school as a kid was nice as an art/craft typically accompanied the day's lesson, so it helped with providing a different avenue of understanding the message of the day. There were a number of different drives throughout the year including food and coinage drives. After my sister and I got out of our class and the parents out of the main service we would typically get a doughnut. My 4 star rating is primarily due to the treatment of my sister and I from various church staff/volunteers that made both of us feel out of place, which is hard to do because my sister and I are kind of polar opposites. One lady would consistently pick on my sister openly, both in front of other people and behind her back. On my end, things went downhill in middle school after I questioned the Bible. I am a scientific type and I believe if something exists, like God, it will come through in the answer to questions, this was lost on the Sunday school instructor. Aside from the treatment aspect it was generally a place I enjoyed.

I attended service today for the third time and I was absolutely moved my Pastor Paul's discussion about the Transfiguration of Jesus; and the music was really special and moving and impactful in its own way. I put this review out here because I am not very "religious" and I personally moved away from the church for many years, but now I have found something that is approachable, not dogmatic, and really makes me think about how I can be a better person for my family, my community, and myself. If anybody is in a similar situation, I highly recommend stopping by for a Sunday service. You might find, as I did, that's it's an absolutely refreshing, insightful, and moving experience.

She explained the service and the church community to me. It brought tears to my eyes. Dan, the Pastor was using the actual words of the Bible to show us how to build a bridge to God. It was so encouraging and I saw the Bible in a new way. So simple. It is now several months later and this loving community is enhanced each day. Several young people alternate presenting the message and it brings forth wonderful ideas, so simple, for enriching our lives and those around us. It is a simple, basic church fillled with love, encouragement and the entire community of the church will light you up. I'm over 80 and they watch out for me. This is a spectacular group of young children, teens, 20-50 years olds and seniors. To me any one over 60 is a senior. Come on Sunday at 10:30 am. Music and then messages from 1-2 people. First Sunday of month is Communion and Potluck Buffet. Try it and I'm sure you will like it and be content there! It truly is God's people watching over you. Welcome to a new home!
