The rainbow banner on the church tower reads "All Are Welcome", and they mean it. Worship services are uplifting--this is a singing congregation and the sanctuary is one of the best music spaces in town! The messages consistently encourage participants to both receive and grow in God's love (a favorite phrase--God loves you and there's nothing you can do about it!) and to share that love through ministries serving others, especially those who are disadvantaged by our current society. Growth opportunities take many forms--pastoral care, classes, worship, and service ministries are the most common. We're far from perfect, but we're loving toward one another as we explore our faith, experiment with ways and means of giving and receiving, and flexible in response to a changing society. The theology relies on each believer to invest in their own faith and understanding rather than there being a single shared list of beliefs that everyone must subscribe to-no creeds or absolute doctrines. This is balanced with an expectation that we will join one another in understanding our faith, scripture, tradition, and our relationships with God--by learning together we assure that none of us unwittingly twist the message to suit our own needs, prejudices or denial. The idea is that we are all pilgrims, each on our own faith and life journeys, and we are journeying together for now. While we are together we are interdependent, each doing what we can to contribute to others and the whole, as well as being served. When someone moves on, they are missed and blessed for their journey. I've been a member of All Pilgrims since before there was an All Pilgrims...that is, I continued in the new congregation when First Christian Church (where I was a member) and Pilgrim Congregational UCC united in 2003. As you'll understand from the messages below, all congregations go thru various "seasons" in our life together. For example, we brought the pastors of both congregations into continued service with the new congregation. Since then, we've had as many as 5 part time pastors at one time, and have now settled in with one pastor. Each brought their own gifts, styles, and personalities to the position and then current needs of the congregation. Some have been contemplative and pastoral, some dynamic and energizing, and a lot more descriptions applied over time.

First off, the worker really seemed like he'd rather be anywhere else than working there. I received a big rack of drumsticks, several cans of tuna which I appreciated, but there was NOTHING fresh or green. The closest thing to a vegetable were the potatoes. Kingdom work is happening in the place. I not only attended FFMC during my college years at SPU, I also ended up working there as well. When I chose to re-enter the church. I was looking for community and fellowship, without the institutional hullabaloo that seems to be crystallizing in many churches. I was deeply moved by the pastors sermon about corruption within the church, as he bookended how we as a church can make a difference. He has also espoused queer affirmation theology, which is a radical departure from the institutional church. The church itself is modest but has a lot of soul, and a large contingent of dedicated members who bring so much life into it. Within its congregation is a member who is 103 years old and just as lively as if she were 20! The pipe organ plays every Saturday and this church is starting up its choir pretty soon. I love the music. Brings me peace of mind in troubling times such as these. There is no expectation of belief. Only acceptance and fellowship. If you are uncertain about everything this is your church!

Mom's Church SITREP…read more So when I am committed to a full weekend with the mom, it sometimes means a Sabbath morning excursion to the church where her official SDA membership is registered. I make no pretense to being a fan of organized religion anymore. However, having said that, there is a lot of positive interaction that can be achieved through community with different churches, including this one. THE SETUP Ironically, my exposure to this particular church predates my mother's in fact. I first came to this church back in 1988 when it hosted the Association of Adventist Forums (AAF) meetings. AAF is a philosophically more progressive element of the SDA Church, though it doesn't really engender any official status with the SDA Church. Shortly around this time, I moved to California with my then-wife, but humorously enough, my mother then maintained her SDA membership in this church. CHURCHY FUNCTIONS The church structure itself is really quite elegant. It has a lot of beautiful rooms and space, including the large sanctuary where the worship services take place as well as the subterranean level where a lot of Sabbath School classes (before the main service at 11am) transpire. They have some pretty kick-ass potlucks, I must say, and when it was my mom's time (since she is a deaconess) to help with the organization, she really puts on a great spread of food for all the members. VISITORS Since I grew up in the SDA Church and went to SDA Academy and College, I have a lot of visitors from both these phases in my life whom will pay a visit to our family in Seattle. This is the church we will are most inclined to bring our guests with our mom to. THE LOWDOWN A pleasant church experience if your interests run this direction.
