The staff is extremely unprofessional. I am sure it has to do with the low pay, otherwise tactful, professional and intelligent people would have been working here. The equipment is outdated. Like the 3rd world country's. You don't even see it in Africa. Do you know how the banks have those banknotes counting machines?! It makes sense when you have to count several thousands. I have seen those machines in The Middle East, India, poor Asian countries, Eastern Europe, etc...but not in the first Hawaiian bank in Kihei. You are supposed to stand and count several thousands of dollars yourself which I did but wanted to double check and put the notes through this machine just in case. The teller looked at me like I accused her of stealing and told me to go to another window next to her as she didn't have that machine, which I did as she passed my money to another teller is another window, after I walked there she yelled: " NOW APOLOGISE TO THIS GUY BECAUSE YOU ARE CUTTING In front of of him!", imagine the staff is telling you to apologize to somebody because they screwed and couldn't provide decent service. Literally publicly SHAMING YOU! Well, lady, if you had had any professionalism you would have apologized to me that you don't have this machine for whatever reason in your window but you will provide it in a minute or 2 if I could wait for a little bit until the machine is available. I understand why they have such a low review. It's because they're a shitty bank. There's a road detour right outside of their location in kihei right now, there was actually a man on the phone waiting to do banking services with them and they didn't even ask him if he wanted to come in before they locked the door. I showed up at 4:01. there was still about three people in line. The manager or person on duty, actually came and open the door to tell me that they would not help me. I was simply trying to deposit rent into my landlord's account thank God I don't actually do business with them NOR WOULD I EVER. Banks are the devil's pocketbook employees. Hope they enjoy getting home on time and all their paid holidays off. Go to a credit union. I just think it's gross when policy degrades kindness, and humans ability to choose to help others when they can. read more

Aloha-I just read several of the other reviews, and I couldn't disagree more with what sounded to me like a lot of entitled jerks. I've found these bank folks to be head and shoulders above other banks in my area. Friendly, courteous, quick, knowledgeable and efficient. Been with them 30+ years. On the rare occasions when there's a line out the door, I've seen the supervisor and account agents step up to windows to help handle the overflow. They had NO control when the County tore up Lipoa Street, a major artery, so yeah, delays. Their online 24/7/365 service is easy to use if you've no time in person or your hours conflict. Unfortunately, they had to close on Saturday, a corporate decision over which, again, they had no control of. The place is clean, quiet and comfortable, the bank is very good about communicating on problems in advance, and continuously trying to keep their electronic services up-to-the-minute and easy to use. As a service worker myself for 50+ years, I'd guess that a lot of complaints come from folks who treat others with an attitude of "I'm special and you should act like it". We have a lot of folks like that in this area. I'd give this bank staff SIX stars if I could. read more

Do not join this bank! Trust me. This bank reasoned that because some thief used an email similar to my name, to make a fraudulent purchase from my bank account, (as in... "myname@gmail.com")... that the purchase was mine and refused to cover it. I mean, I could probably open a Gmail email account with George Washington's name on it. I guess this bank would start calling me, "Mr President"... HOW STUPID CAN U BE?! While this was happening, I had to literally yell to make the bank clerk stop from preventing my own access to my money. Once I raised my voice, she finally heard what I was saying but, it would have messed things up for weeks. Also, when I had this fraud, I needed a new atm card. But, even though I requested it, it was never ordered. I didn't know that and waited the customary two weeks without ATM access. At that point, I went into the bank and searching for the new ATM card, discovered it had never been ordered for me. Two more weeks without ATM access. They don't just give you a replacement card then and there. You have to order it and wait for weeks. My business receives checks from law firms... for absolutely no reason, they have held these checks for up to six weeks without explanation... SIX weeks saying they have to verify the check. From a law firm. Can anyone explain why it took six weeks to verify this check? NO!! But it wasn't just the one time, they've held checks for four weeks before. I'm charged for everything. Overdraft fees are $30 a day. ATM charges are five dollars each. However, even if I use the first Hawaiian Bank ATM in another town, AT the bank, I'm still charged the five dollars. So, using my own bank, I'm charged ATM fees. They just make stuff up to charge you for. This is the worst bank I've ever experienced in my life! Absolutely do not join us bank! I went in to see about a service charge on my account and the lady wanted to change my account to save $1 but it would change my ATM etc..I SPECIFICALLY stated I did not want to because the last time my number changed on debit and took over two weeks to get...come to find out, she did it anyway. Not worth the $1 a month to screw up my account and make me change everything that I pay online. Got a call apologizing but it screwed up everything and when I spoke with the branch manager (Karen), she would do nothing to help.Lost my account, my debit card no longer worked, etc all because of their customer service negligence. When we first moved to Hawaii in 2004, we had issues in trying to cash a check. At that point we did our business elsewhere. In 2019 we got an auto loan through First Hawaiian Bank. Unfortunately, due to Covid restrictions, we have had to move back to the mainland in December 2020. In February 2021, seven months ago, we paid off our auto loan. We still have not gotten our title slip. They have one excuse after another. We are not in Hawaii so it is hard to follow up. Calling them seems to go nowhere. So I have had many negative experiences at this bank in the last 15 years. When I went in the other day I saw a lady I did not recognize in the back. I shuffled past the usual ladies at the desks and made my way to a smiling lady in the back named Mary Jo. She helped me close out my box and was an absolute blessing to deal with. I cancelled my safety deposit box and they continue to charge me for it. I have called six different times, sat on hold for at least 30-45 mins and each time was told 'it will be resolved and someone will call me'. Still not resolved. Still haven't had a call back. Disgusting customer service. Waiting for it to be credited and then I am cancelling my account. I had been a FHB member for 22 years. Had my business banking with them. Personal banking. I will not recommend them. Yesterday I spoke to a supervisor at their call center who 'assured me he would speak to the General Manager at Kihei FHB and they would call me today'. If you have anywhere to be, this has to be the absolute slowest first Hawaiian bank I've been to. On the plus, the staff is friendly and the place is clean but everyone's on Hawaiian time. Keep that in mind. If you've got time, then great- stop in. This branch is clean but the decor inside could be updated. The pens didn't have ink (pet peeve) so I had to run back outside to find a pen. By the time we got to a teller, I was a bit frustrated because I have never seen tellers take so much time to deposit cash. On the plus- I really must emphasize the staff is so kind. The only thing that mitigated my excessive time spent. Parking is easy and convenient-- free and there's always spaces open. read more

I've been using this bank for over 25 years, never once bounced a check, or received a bogus check from anyone else, and have to wait a week for a check to clear that I have been given by the same person several times in the past. Not only that but you have to wait forever when you call FHB. There is no way to email them with complaints. I'm completely done with this bank and I can't believe I lasted this long. I will be moving over to the credit union instead. Thanks for nothing FHB. There are a couple of bank tellers who I will miss. You know who you are. read more

I really try to support local but this bank location is trash. The staff are rude and one of the staff members tried to insinuate that I was forging my own signature when with my Veteran I.D. The three women that sit at the desks to the left are awful. We have been lied to by two of them and laughed at by the other, which is why they pretend not to remember their own clients when you have to go see them again. I wouldn't waste your time. First time going into this Bank and got excellent service. The staff are very friendly, they took the time to explain to us how their banking system works. The inside of this bank is very nicely decorated with high ceilings and great air conditioning. Most Banks in Canada are quite dull and office like. I do not usually bank here but I wanted to be fair to this bank & add my experience w/ a better review than what is currently posted: ( I don't feel they deserve only one star!!) I have always had great customer service here! They had treats for my kids & when the business line was slow the busness only teller always took on customers in the personal business line! Never a long wait! I guess I can agree w/ the other review regarding the Internet charges to be unfair! I do Internet banking w/ BOH & never get charged so I do agree this charge is unfair! Very slow to report sources of direct deposits. If you are a regular depositor/account holder - pay attention to benefits of various groups you may be able to join to get things as benefits for holding accounts here because in my experience, they don't tell you you can do better - you have to look things up for yourself and ask them to enroll you in the upgrade programs. My wife and I keep the bulk of our assets in our mainland accounts because they pay much better. We keep what we may need here in Hawaii just to be fluid. BTW, we've lived here for close to 20 years but have had accounts here since somewhere around 1995. read more

First Hawaiian Bank is great. Friendly staff and in my opinion the best of the Hawaiian banks. This one can have a bit of a line at times though. If you live in South Kihei I definitely suggest the Wailea branch as the lines are rarely long. read more
