My experience with First centres around the ever so unreliable number 42. This is the only bus service near my house - I don't relish the idea of a ten minute walk up a big hill to get the number 4 or 16, so I rely pretty heavily on the 42. When we first moved, I discovered I could get a bus at quarter to 6 in the morning for when I start work at 6. Well, I could get it - if it ever turned up. One morning it was 10 minutes late and another morning it just didn't show up at all, meaning that at 6am when I should've been at work, I was running back across the road to get my car and sped to work. Then I gave up on that service and decided I'd just get up earlier and get the 25 past 5 bus, that way if it was late, I'd have a bit more leeway. It was good at first...then it started turning up late or not at all - as it did this morning. Then the drivers started mysteriously having no change - something I'd understand if I was getting on nearer town, but this is at the second stop on the first route of the day! Come on! I try when I can to buy a Green Zone past, heaven forbid I dare to buy a day rider or a £1.70 (soon to be £1.90) with anything other than the correct change. 'Oh I can't change that, I've only just started!'...that is my problem, how? Not my responsibility to make sure you have a change float! But apparently First have stopped sending out their drivers with a change float - I suspect the driver who told me that was telling porkies though, as the next day when I paid with a fiver, I got change...
And it's not just getting to town either - it's coming back too. I had to complain once on account that we'd stopped on Eastgate for a driver change. Except there was no new driver. So instead of waiting (or y'know, explaining the situation to the passengers), the driver who was leaving made a phone call and then buggered off, shutting us on the bus! We'd been there at least 10 minutes when the next bus turned up - I've never seen people get off a bus so quickly.
One of their responses to a complaint I sent recently was 'we hope this does not deter you from using First in any way'...well you know what? I HAVE to use First, there IS no other bus company operating in Gipton! It's ridiculous how we're encouraged to use public transport - but with the poor service and the prices going up constantly, it's no wonder that people are returning to their cars. Unfortunately, I can't afford to drive in every day, so I have to rely on their poor service and rude drivers (see that hump in the road?
