For 8+ years, I have lived under an inconsiderate old man playing the electric guitar connected to an amplifier. He doesn't have floor covering, which the management has failed to enforce, and he plays his TV at night above my bedroom after 10 PM. You would think they would have done something about it after more than 50 emails I sent to them. At least impose the monetary fees we all signed up for in our Building Rules. But no, not First Management and their utmost incompetent management. If they do not do anything about it either way, at least they will get my review. At this point, my only options are either they go bankrupt or I sell my property to recover some of my peace of mind. They are so deficient that my money is on the former. Besides that, the whole condition of the building is pitiful. The more than a year with no laundry room. The fetid smell coming from broken sewage lines that take weeks to get solved, The constantly broken elevator, and like that, I can go on and on and on. Beware if you are buying an apartment in this building 77-16 Austin Street 1) The board members don't prefer people of color:( 2) They kept my application pending for 6 months !!! 3) If you are Asian or person of color they will keep your application pending for months without any update 4) They will play games and ask for unnecessary documents and eventually reject your application. 5) Board approval process is 4 to 5 months minimum! 6) Realtor kept many secrets about the unprofessional board, eventually you will figure out midway and regret that its too late. 7) Expect a last minute surprise!!! 8) I am the second Asian applicant who got rejected. read more

*AVOID AT ALL COST* The super Nick; Kavish Shingwani and Nerys Garcia from management are condescending, dismissive, and outright rude. Lived in 619 E 5th St. They're charging me a +$225 "cleaning fee" out of my security deposit for putting garbage on the sideway when I only threw it out there because of a miscommunication w/ Nick. I could only think he had asked me to throw it there because there was already a huge mess outside. Nick and Nerys accused me of throwing 90% of the garbage when I only threw out 10%. I specifically spelled out which ones were mine, requested they check the CCTV - but they did not show the slightest effort to carry any of my requests. Why wouldn't they check the cameras if the super and I are saying two drastically different things? No proof of receipt was given on the absurd fee -- which they basically charged me for being a few steps short from the alley and throwing garbage on top of already existent garbage. They're either: 1) Lazy 2) Incompetent 3) Corrupted - in line with the other reviews 4) All of the above. Oh - and this was their response to the 5-hour cleanup I did upon move out and the extra rent I accidentally paid and now need refunded. Also: I asked for a bathroom renovation since day 1 but management only took action after my toilet leaked downstairs. They made me move out for a week during our legal contract. Had to move out of town. Had to clean the apt for 6 hours flat upon return. All furniture and floors were filled w/ muck. Lastly, Kavish did not get back to me when I requested for compensation. I let the issue fly because I was too stressed by that point on how this had been eating up all my time, energy, money -- even after it was done. Yet, Kavish took it out on me saying, "if the reimbursement was important to you, I would think you would contact me for an update, but according to you, it was not." Is requesting once not enough? To think I would have to ask multiple times -- like I am doing again, is beneath what any client should be put through. And if they're gonna charge me a $225 "cleaning fee" for my garbage, why aren't they compensating me for the 6-hour clean up I went through calculated in the same ratio in return? I would need $1,350 in that case. Do you honestly think it's harder for a garbage man to clean garbage near a dumpster or for me to clean out the dust in my apartment for 6 hours? Apt is also literally falling apart. Ceiling cracked down in my shower but I was given (again) zero compensation from management despite the huge safety hazard it was. Gee who knows, maybe they were only gonna compensate me after I got crushed from their ceiling. Huge roaches crawl out of their bathroom/cracked floors/walls. Outlet covers broke w/ electricity sparking and fridge also broke down. This ain't half of it. Management does not bat an eye to your concerns. They only talk to you when a mismanagement issue falls through - like say, a ceiling toppling over your shower for instance. Other times, Kavish and Nerys ignore your calls or address you in an extremely condescending way. And Nick? He shoves accusations down your throat for things you did not do - like blaming you for the water leak downstairs when its 900% due to apartment just being plain-ass shitty. When you explain yourself, he shuts you out with another one of his accusations. There is zero communication with him. While I was stuck for 1.5 years, y'all have time to RUN. Since we have moved to this apartment , we have been impressed by Henry , the super , He does a superlative job in maintaining this building at a high level. Joseph is our building manager and he has been more than competent and excellent in managing our building. He's always on top of things and helping the board prioritize and resolving all of our issues. On our monthly meetings, he has been getting engineers involved when necessary at no cost to our building. While taking his time explaining the risks of potential hazards if we don't resolve the issues that needs to be addressed right away. I know he holds a very difficult and tough position as you have to get 10+ board members all on the same page. He's very responsive, responsible, and knowledgeable in his field. This is by the far the worst management company and renting experience I've ever had. They are disgusting people who only want to steal your money. They kept our security deposit even though we left the place in better condition than when we moved in. We lived in 140 Orchard and the tub never worked (it would fill with dirt and gunk from the drain and not go down), we had a severe mice problem, and they would walk in and show our apartment when we weren't notified. One time the realtor walked in when one of us was changing and he said "hey, it's new york, we're all friends." NO THANK YOU. After suing them in court for our deposit, the investigators said their bank came back saying their account does not exist. DO NOT LIVE UNDER THIS MANAGEMENT FOR ANY MEANS. read more

My two roommates and I found an apartment on Streeteasy that was listed as having no broker fee. Once we got to the apartment, we found out it had a "management fee" but fell in love and took the apartment anyway. The guy who showed us the apartment ended up with 7k in his pocket from walking up the stairs (he lived on the first floor). The broker who lived on the 1st floor had problems with us wearing heels in the hallway, having too many people over, and talking loudly in the hallways. After he sent us an email complaining, we never had a party and were very cautious walking through the hallways. We later found out this man was the landlord's nephew and we got an email when our lease was almost up saying they were not renewing our lease because "they know about the instances." We never received an email from them about any such "instances" and the last time they had complained was 7 months earlier. Sounds like the "broker" wanted his 7k commisssion again. The 3 girls who lived in our apartment before us were also "kicked out" and they would not tell us why. I would never rent an apartment from them again. They refused to hear our side of the story and will not address our emails. The whole thing was shady and the people who work there are scum. Yes, Kostas, I'm talking about you. read more

So unprofessional and incompetent. If you can avoid buying or renting under this management company I would advise you to do so honestly! They do respond to your emails, and when they do it is not a dialogue, they do not care about your concerns or your poor conditions they only care about their own interest. Their buildings are horribly managed, horribly maintained and their lack of communications and management is detrimental to the shareholders and any resident. Many reviewers were indeed correct: they do threat you at all times they use their position to harass you, evict you, not respecting your rights and so on...we have actually filed a complain to the U.S. Department of Housing because they have abused way too many people in my building and we have submitted a petition to close their office down. They also ask their staff to come on yelp to write positive reviews, as they must have realized that no one will ever write a positive review about them. I flagged it to yelp and they realized that the previous review was from one of their incompetent staff (Margaret) and deleted her comment. Soon enough, out of nowhere a positive comment was posted again lol, coincidence?? I do not think so! IDIOTS! I was seriously taken back by the way me and my roommate were treated with this company. They are crooks in every sense of the word. We had originally began working with this company because they were listed as a broker fee apartment. Upon later finding out that they had outrageous other fees that almost doubled what I would even consider paying to a broker. We took the apartment out of time constraint. We were basically let go of our lease because MY ALARM WAS TOO loud. Not for parties. Not for being bad neighbors. Because at one time everyday my alarm was too loud in the morning. Off to a really bad start. I am closing on a condo in 8 days and Luz who manages my building hasn't returned any of my many calls and emails regarding moving in, even the email with the subject line IMPORTANT. I am so frustrated. I need to book movers and I can't without scheduling a move in date with Luz. I hope, going forward, that this management company is more helpful. read more

I have to say they have done a good job in communicating with me (particularly Jimmy and Nerys), but definitely gave me the run around and the pressure when we were moving out. However, i never had any problems during our stay there since 2013. They were always helpful when something went wrong. It was a good and spacious 1 bdrm. If I could give 0 stars I would. I made a mistake on a form and Margaret accused me of fraud. When I tried to explain that I had just made a mistake she started demanding extra documents that weren't previously needed. I tried calling her and respectfully said that there had been a misunderstanding and I'd like to explain what happened and figure out what to do next. She would not even let me speak, interrupting me every two words, and eventually decided I was too impossible to talk to and hung up, saying she would only communicate with me by email. I tried calling her back and the woman who picked up said I wasn't allowed to talk to Margaret. Margaret still hasn't answered my email. read more

This is my second time living in a building managed by First Management and I have nothing but positive things to say about them. The first apartment, I was there for five years and now I have moved to another one of their buildings- both have been wonderful. All the staff I've dealt with are professional and accommodating, the buildings are clean and safe at all times and if I ever had an issue inside the apartment it was always taken care of in a timely manner and was fixed. I agree with negative feedback, if u plan to purchase coop from them, gota be very be careful, almost all the major bank won't do mortgage with them, we done with chase and they all not accept this coop, first is ok once processing to get more document from them then u will receive a leeter from the bank, all coop has less insurance and not cover this not cover that, that's why their monthly maintenance fee so low, and over 80% is rental now. We process all th document after seeing the board, they just reject with no reason, agend told us they choose color of people. Also they only ask u to mortgage from freedom mortgage company, cause only such mortgage will accept their application. Must ask ur lawyer to get all financial document and violation, especially check if allow u to mortgage from major bank. Board are so rude and 3 old men are no manner at all . My husband and I have been tenants in our building in Astoria for over 3 years with Jimmy as our Landlord. Jimmy has been amazing and has taken care of us as his tenants, always quick to answer a call or email and take action if needed. Not livable conditions (bathroom above us flooded into our house, no working dishwasher, no ice maker, cracks in doors, broken shelves, extremely wet air and possible mold) and when I contacted management requesting basic living conditions I got HUNG UP ON on 4 different occasions!!! completely UNPROFESSIONAL and UNACCEPTABLE. Reading the previous negative reviews my girlfriend and I were very hesitant to rent from first mgmt. The apartment however was to good to pass up and we decided to take a chance. We signed the lease and have been very happy with the level of service and upkeep of the building. 1) Takes days to reply to emails. Quite certain that they sit at their desks all day picking their noses all day. 2) It takes about 2 weeks for maintenance to come fix something. Maybe they should hire more maintenance workers?? 3) They don't ask for feedback from the tenants but looking at the other yelp reviews, they should. 4) They own so many properties that theres a bunch of different offices- good luck finding out which one is yours. This agency has saved our building. I purchased a co-op in 2007 and did not receive financial statements (after the original purchase info) for 8 years of living there. This is the worst management company in astoria. Horribly run building (The Santorini), they are quick to fine and harass you for made up violations. Charge a $500 "moving fee" they say is refundable, but find multiple reasons to not refund to you. They do not reply to email or phone, only leave passive aggressive postings in hallway. Additionally they do not allow food delivery people into the building, the tenant must come down to the ground floor to pick up your order. Joseph Miller and First Management are impossible to deal with and as a result the santorini is hemorrhaging tenants, building open for 4 years and over half of the original tenants who purchased have left the building. read more

We are new clients of first management and when we came to the office to sign our lease jimmy could not have been more helpful. He helped us negotiate with our broker in order to cut the cost of our move. He was friendly, welcoming, and had no problem sitting and taking with us for almost an hour to work out any issues we had with our new lease. Overall it was a very positive experience. read more

It seems some of the other reviewers have brokers and management companies confused. My experience is with First as a *management company*, not a broker (which they are not, and never claimed to be). My building is served by First, and everyone I have come in contact with there is professional and courteous. Elmhurst building 8325 they manage has been without cooking gas since 12/21/15, National grid shut it down due to a leak. They hired rude and shady plumber to go change gas valves in each unit, but that's not where the leak was. Gas is part of monthly maintenance which is still being collected in full. first management said since they provided electric grill they will not credit tenants and National Grid is who turned off the gas. So the tenants pay for gas they don't have and higher electric bills for using the electric grill... in other words management is stealing money. Also there hasn't been a Board of Directors election since they took over management (4 or 5 years). read more

Having lived in 7 different buildings in New York City, I have never had an amazing experience with a management company until now. During my lease, any questions or concerns I had were immediately answered and handled. I was unfortunately in a situation where I had to get out of my lease and they could not have been more compliant. Nery's Garcia at the management office took the time to patiently speak to me on numerous occasions to get everything processed in an efficient and appropriate manner. She is so nice, helpful and a pleasure to deal with. Kostas was also extremely helpful and flexible with coordinating my move in and move out. He also readily answered any questions throughout my tenancy and even credited me for the day I moved out early!
