Unlike…read more its neighboring coastal town neighbors, the coexistence of both businesses (tourism and commercial fishing) is symbiotic. Not competing with one another but exists mutually bringing out the best to draw tourists in, like myself. Also ancient lore has it that the calm is brought about by the calming effects of the Morro Rock. Embarcadero: The waterfront, which is called the Embarcadero, is a mix of retail shops, restaurants, hotels, charter tours, local service businesses, and parks. The Embarcadero is well planned out. Behind the shops is a walkway (ADA) with views of the harbor. There is an area with a telescope that locals call the seal viewing point. There is a floating platform in the harbor that seals flop onto and lounge about in each other's company. When there's something to talk about, they sure can chat it up. They can be loud and expressive, heard from the shore. The telescope is free, not one of those coin operated jobbers. Waterfront coastal access walkway: Throughout the harbor view walkway are information boards describing the local plants, animals, ecosystems, and city history.Plus there are memorials along the walkway, to name a few: Anchor Memorial honoring fisherman lost at sea; Nick Howell Legacy Bench honoring his contributions to the local community; First Landing of Filipinos in America marker; and CA state historic landmark # 821 Morro Rock. Restroom Situation: Having clean and accessible restrooms is so important especially for folks day tripping doing the tourist thing. There are public restrooms throughout the Embarcadero and along the coastal access walkway linking the Embarcadero to Coleman Park, iconic Morro Bay Rock and adjoining Morro Strand beach. The parking lots next to the Rock and beach is free. Free access to the beach as well. I gotta hand it to the City for the forethought of the multitude of restrooms. Boat Launch: On the far side of the Embarcadero Street from the Morro Rock is a boat launch that is free to use. But be aware that parking fees for the launch is enforced. It use to be free, but that changed recently in March 2026. Plus this area has a park (Greenspace, play area, picnic table/bbqs, restroom, fish cleaning station). Maritime Museum: Such a special place. Outdoor exhibits of real vessels. The one room museum surprisingly holds significant local artifacts and historical info. Plus the best part, it's FREE. Donations accepted but no pressure or mention by staff to do so. Landmarks: +Morro Rock - The Rock stands 580 feet tall and is a volcanic plug dating back to 20,000 million years ago. It's against the law to climb onto the rock. It's a protected area for birds. Plus with all the guano, you don't want any part of that, +Three Stacks- PG& E built an energy plant along the harbor in the 1950s. Thus the three stacks. The plant was closed in 2014. After a study was completed that determined it would take about $1 million per year to maintain the three stacks, the City voted to remove the three stacks which will be taken down by 2028. Say your goodbyes now. History: The Chumash tribe lived here before the European settlers. Archaeological artifacts of the local tribe date back to over 3500 years ago. Then by the late 1500s, it has the earliest recorded European interactions. By the late 1700s, permanent European settlement occurred in the area. In 1870, the city became officially incorporated, just 20 years later after California obtained statehood in 1850.

They have nice places to eat and shop at. Some of our favorites are Dorn's, Giovanni's and Dockside to name a few. Cal Poly is not too far away, in San Louis Obispo. It's definitely worth checking out. You will see lots of surfers at the beach close to Morro Rock.

Everybody was dancing and had a good time. My husband bought a bottle of wine and we drink about half of it. I know some of the volunteers there and they really work hard. They're there every weekend when they have concerts setting up staying for the concert and then tearing down much appreciated. Always remember to tip wherever there's a tip jar. My brother and his girlfriend want to go with us when we go again next year. I even recognize people from last year. Great following.

We just attended a concert at the Lighthouse outdoor venue. It was fantastic! The music, the views,…read moreand the staff. But.............this was a bummer. You cannot bring in water. They make you dump it before you enter the seating area. The women at the entry was very rude when I asked why. So your only way to have water is to buy the small plastic bottles which are not great for drinking or for the environment. My suggestion would be to have a filling station inside the venue so people with water bottles could drink water for free in their own vessels.

Our City hall is a real gem. First built in 1913 it was the crown jewel of Atascadero. Fast forward…read moreto 2003 and the San Simeon earthquake severely damaged the building. Skip now to today. and with the help of good vision, a great plan and lots of money, the building is restored beyond the grandeur of its beginnings. Now up to earthquake code, and more it is a hub of city activity. The dome in the main lobby is world class, and even if you have no business to conduct at City hall, step in and enjoy the view. The ceiling is marvelous. There are 2 single room museums that depict tent city, and the earthquake rebuild. all done so well. A real city hall to be proud of.

This is a monument hiding in plain sight, right next to the Amtrak RR in SLO. It has been here for…read moreyears and is dedicated to the Chinese Railworkers that built much of the rail system near & far. For some reason, I do not see a listing for this landmark. I wanted my little nephews to try to appreciate it, but they are too young. In this area, there are very few landmarks or other places that note Asian history here. There is only one intact building [Ah Louis] in what is left of Chinatown. There is a small Chinese [Cheung] Park & an even tinier Japanese [Eto] Park in SLO...and that is pretty much it for many miles. What is even cooler is the little town of Guadalupe which is near Santa Maria, and still has intact buildings from when it was a Japantown. There is also an old Chinese community house in the Cambria area, which was used long ago by Chinese Seaweed Farmers. For now, I will copy a good reference from the Atlas Obscura on this monument in SLO, as follows: " COUNTLESS TOWNS OWE THEIR VERY existence (and survival) to being a stop on one of the many train routes across America. San Luis Obispo, some 185 miles or so northwest of Los Angeles, California, is one of them. Today, the city honors the often overlooked role that Chinese immigrants played in the construction of America's railways with the monument known as "The Iron Road Pioneers." At least 20,000 Chinese immigrants helped with the superhuman task of constructing the Transcontinental Railroad. Often living and working in an atmosphere of open discrimination, their contribution was largely ignored in the congratulations. These workers have sometimes been referred to as "silent spikes." "The Iron Road Pioneers," the small statue outside the San Luis Obispo Amtrak station, pays tribute to these nameless workers who toiled on the rails. It also memorializes the many who died in the process, buried in unmarked graves. Unveiled in 2003, this bronze statue was created by Elizabeth MacQueen. It features two traditionally dressed men standing opposite each other levering tracks into position, a pile of rivets alongside ready to complete the next small stage of their endless task." In addition, there is a plaque right across from the monument that tells the story. The monument and plaque were contributed in great part due to the local Chinese community, including local organizations that are also affiliated with long-time local residents, a Chinese Church, and people from Cal-Poly University. There is a small population of Chinese who have periodic events and activities throughout the year. Every so often, we also get involved, but the pandemic has put a damper on many things.

Her remarks, welcome to SLO town, you pretty much done it all. Hence the SLO...lol... I always thought that was funny. The memory of that stuck with me every time someone mentioned the town. Fast forward to years later and many of visit. This place isn't what i remembered. Downtown now is bustling with loads of shopping and amazing restaurants. It is a college town but with a lively community. So many amazing places for shopping and dining. Every one of the restaurant we've been too, I highly recommend. Also the restaurant/bars for a nightcaps are all worth it. Walking up and down the street is a good couple of blocks but packed with major charms. The park and river walk is quite nice and cute. I believe there's a farmers market on Thursday which I heard is amazing. You're not far from the ocean, a good 20 minutes or so to Morro bay. Besides the downtown, there's a good amount of place nearby. Gone are the days when I really thought it was slow here that it wasn't worth coming back. Now it's pretty lively. Don't let the name fool you.
