Shortly after communicating our decision, a report was made regarding alleged issues involving our household. The matter was reviewed and dismissed immediately with no findings. While we understand that childcare providers are mandated reporters, the timing and handling of this situation were deeply troubling and raised serious concerns about judgment and professionalism. It is also worth noting that the staff member we had raised concerns about was no longer employed at the center within a few weeks of those concerns being brought forward. This experience completely undermined our trust in the center and its leadership. Families should feel confident that concerns will be handled constructively and responsibly unfortunately, that was not our experience here. We strongly encourage other parents to ask detailed questions about how concerns are addressed and escalated before enrolling

Our initial tour of The Learning Cottage left us feeling completely confident that this was the best place for our family (a feeling we had yet to experience at many other centers). We were thrilled when a part time spot opened in the JPI classroom and were able to quickly transition into a full time role. Within just a few weeks our daughter's speech and excitement to learn blossomed and she has continued to excel at The Learning Cottage. She was speaking incessantly, making friends, and having fun! She (and we) absolutely adore her teachers and their commitment to each child's academic and socioemotional development is obvious. We are so grateful to have been afforded the opportunity to be a part of this wonderful community and don't want to think about what we'll do when it's time to move on!

She also developed a love of vegetables because of the school's focus on healthy eating. When she was teething, her teachers offered her frozen peas to help soothe her gums, and to this day they are still one of her favorite snacks! Most importantly, she absolutely loved going to school every day. The teachers created such a fun, nurturing environment that she was always excited to learn, play, and see her friends. The kids do organic gardening, have a weekly organic farmer's market, and have no idea how much they are learning as they play, play, play. The preschool is strong in sensory integration, which means that Karen's curriculum uses a lot of body-centered activities to stimulate the brain. (i.e. upper body movement, tactile activities, and vestibular like spinning and jumping) This is good for all kids, but especially good for active or attention deficit types. One of my concerns when I sent my then-three-year-old was continuing a strong sense of family and place for her. I didn't want a school that required her to fit into a peg or become a number in a sea of faces. Karen's school became a second home for all of us-- when I had parenting problems or discipline questions, Karen spent time talking me through loving, but firm, tactics. And the kids all 'studied' empathy-- at a school event when a kid got hurt, all the kids came running to help. One got an ice pack, one got mommy, and another rubbed the injured child's back. Amazing to watch. As my daughter got older, I worried about her academic readiness. But even though the academic side is embedded within the play structure of the school day, and not immediately obvious, they are learning. My kindergartener is now reading at a second grade level and LOVES school-- including math and science and she didn't get that from me. I credit Karen. In fact, my only complaint is that my second daughter can't go until she's potty-trained.
