Led by Mr. Dwayne, the tour is an hour and a half learning about the Burton Street Community, a historically Black neighborhood in West Asheville and the victim of gentrification and highway expansions. Hood Huggers was created to serve as a champion for the 1912 neighborhood and its long-time residents. My wife, eight-year-old daughter, and I booked a Sunday morning tour. Since it was just us, he gave us the option to walk it or take his little shuttle. Mr. Dwayne gave us the background on the area before Mr. Cotton, the grandson of the man who founded the neighborhood, joined us with a book of photos. After a drive, we ended at the Peace Gardens and Market, a sacred space for the community.

Where do I begin? WORST MOVE EVER!! I had used this company for more than 30 years with little…read moreissue. We were moving from TN to SC, and needed 1 month of storage in between in Charleston. This move included the staff and contractors from Asheville, NC, Columbia, SC and Charleston, SC. I could post (literally) 100's of pictures displaying the trauma. I won't bore you. It took me 8 mos. to get everything repaired, replaced and/or compensated for a total loss. I was never given a "reason" as to what happened during our move. A detective I spoke with during all of this, after reviewing the damage with pictures stated, "I've never seen anything like it! Either Antifa came through the warehouse with baseball bats, or the tractor trailer carrying your things was involved in an accident and turned over!" It was absolutely heartbreaking. A custom-made sofa had to be completely reupholstered, a wooden doweled leg on a grandfather clock had to be repaired, and the working mechanism replaced in the clock (at MY expense). I had numerous chairs soiled, scratched, dented...some beyond repair! I had family heirlooms destroyed...the damage was unbelievable! 8 mos. of my time providing photos, working with upholstery shops, working with furniture repairmen, locksmith, etc. In the end, Smith Dray Line repaired, replaced and/or had to compensate me for thousands of dollars of items. They refused to replace the working mechanism of my limited-edition grandfather clock. They admitted to breaking a wooden leg completely off the base of the clock, but would not take responsibility for the working mechanism of the clock ($2700). A total disappointment! I would NOT recommend!

Asheville Tool Library is a home repair person's dream. For $100 a year a member can borrow any…read moretool for a week. That's a bargain, especially when the tools needed are one time use and expensive. This is all volunteer run, so be nice to the people behind the counter and take time to book your tool online from the website before you arrive so that you're sure to get it. No renewals week after week and there are late fees that accrue, so be cognizant of the time rules. You might also consider volunteering to help this organization that helps so many. Don't want to work with the public? Stand at the back bench and fix some tools or accession some of the donated tools into the system. Great idea. Great people. Great organization. Keep it going with your donations.

The mitigation team was excellent, doing an outstanding job of explaining what they were doing. Unlike others we heard about, they hauled away the moldy debris. They use bio friendly agents and are very reasonably priced for the quality of service.

For a small donation of $5 I met with a lovely group of people and our guide Sarge, who took us on a trip about 45 minutes outside of downtown to the Hemphill Bald trail at Cataloochee Ranch. I really could not have asked for a better experience. Sarge was so friendly and knowledgeable, he was so clearly passionate about the mountains and the flora and fauna to be found there and shared what he knew in a relaxed and accessible way. This hike was open to both dogs and children and everyone had a great time, there were even snacks and prizes! This is an incredible local resource, I highly recommend looking them up if you're visiting and would like a guided hike, whether or not you have a car. It's a lot cheaper than going through for hire businesses or Airbnb Experiences, and the money goes right back into the conservancy that works hard to protect the land.
