Let me assure you what a BLESSING this inpatient hospice house is for Columbus. As someone who travels along the East coast providing hospice care for multiple hospitals/hospice, OhioHealth provides top-notch care! These patients/families are not only made comfortable in a beautiful environment, but they are also provided compassion. Based on some of the reviews, some folks simply do not understand that if a patient is placed in a hospice house--they are dying and hospice appropriate. Most of these patients are experiencing symptoms that were too difficult to manage at home or they are here briefly to give the families 5 days of respite. When/how long the patient lives is between the patient and the universe/God. If clinicians could cure the patient, they would. The majority of these patients have reached the end of what aggressive treatments and medicines can cure/fix--to do more would only prolong suffering. Comfort care becomes the priority! Our job is to make sure they are comfortable and provide education for families. As physicians and nurses, we have medications to assist the patient as they near end of life. Social Workers provide resources. Chaplains provide spiritual support. It's a multifaceted approach to put the patient first. Again, I really do hope Columbus realizes what a rare and special gift Kobacker is to the community--many cities are not so fortunate to have inpatient hospice facilities! Blessings!

My mom lived here for almost a year…read more She moved here from a private residence. We needed a spot immediately, and I feel the price reflected that need, it was very expensive, maybe unfairly so. I feel they put her in a price point higher and had assessed more care than what she truly needed, and getting that downgraded was more difficult than it needed to be. I feel part of the reason for this was some the forum was in the transition of new ownership which makes things bumpy. When she first arrived was the forum at Knightsbridge and when she left, it was the estates at Knightsbridge? To be honest, I'm not sure what the name of the place actually evolved into everybody still calls at the forum. I have since moved her out of the facility I can say that when she was in their care, her experience was good. She never was treated roughly or had any incidences that I needed to be aware of. The food seems to have gone downhill and I do not like that the assisted living across the street where she lived is not as nice of the public spaces as it is across the street for the independent care that is my biggest ripe of this place the people who need more care and pay higher cost have a lesser aesthetic in their common space and that did irritate me. I'll be up. It irritated me more than my mom. We moved her to a different company/facility not because of care or quality of care but more due to location. I do like that the forum has memory care and skilled nursing. It was a nice place for my mom, but I would explore pricing of other places when you're looking at this place, this place is good but also is expensive comparatively.

We also switched to a facility in Upper Arlington for a 6 or 7 month period during that time. The people at The Forum cared for my Mom in so many ways. They went from being friends to being caretakers during her transition. I could not recommend The Forum highly enough for how they took care of Mom. We moved Mom to the facility in Upper Arlington after she broke her hip. Great physical therapy team and great facilities. But the one thing they lacked was humanity. They didn't care about Mom, just the checks my sisters and I were writing. Back to The Forum. Not the gold standard for facilities, but certainly good enough and they are upgrading constantly, but more than the Gold Standard for the assistance we received and the help from the entire staff. Mom passed a couple of weeks ago. The nurses and hospice people that took care of Mom were in tears. Genuinely. Love this place and you'll be blessed if a family member has to be there.

My aunt is Chinese and there are some cultural quirks that hospice needs to recognize that they are not. Disappointing because they teach that in Nursing 101. But they are making this process very stressful. If my aunt weren't overwhelmed already, I would find a different hospice.

Then later, after a different nurse was caring for him after he was actively dying (Kaylin was amazing!!), where she did absolutely everything for him and was kind and compassionate and answered my questions at all hours, the first horrible nurse came back on Monday, declared that he was "okay" because he was "making hand gestures at her" that was "communicating" to her and that they would take him off of daily services because of it. He was going through terminal agitation and had been making "hand gestures" for the past few days. I felt like I was being gaslit because I had been with him all day and night for the past 5 days and he was not "okay" and I didn't want him losing daily visits. I spent the entire day on the phone, insisting on a second diagnosis, and when it was done she agreed with me and told me that he was still actively dying, showing no physical or mental reaction. He died the next morning. I spoke to Director of Nursing on the phone, and was told that this inconsiderate nurse had some "re-education". I know that nurse liked my dad and when he was more cognizant at the beginning, thought he was funny cracking jokes and kept saying he "couldn't be actively dying" - I truly believe she convinced herself of that, tried to convince me of that multiple times, and couldn't admit she was wrong. Lady, that's my dad. I don't want him to be dying, either, but making me second-guess my decisions that I was making BASED ON MEDICAL diagnosis was a terrible weight on me and the way she treated me was deeply inappropriate and demeaning. On top of that, my aunt died two months later, and that hospice service had someone stay over night, in person, while she was actively dying. No one ever offered to stay over, I didn't even know it was something hospice does until I saw it with my aunt. The long term care facility said they tried to make up the difference for the hospice workers so they didn't have to visit as much, but they have multiple, multiple people to attend to and someone should have been there from ECHO just for my dad. I'm not satisfied with the "re-education" of this unprofessional nurse, I would have liked to hear that she was taken off of patient care until she could prove that she's capable of interacting with patients and their families in an empathetic or even with basic human courtesy and compassion. With the exception of Kaylin, ECHO basically took a very traumatic time and made it about 100 times worse, hours before my dad died - and even earlier than that. I was willing to forgo leaving a review if I was satisfied when I called them to leave feedback, but I was not. I felt like the woman I spoke to on the phone was equal parts slightly annoyed that I called, or just figuratively patting me on the head to try to get me to go away. Everyone afterward was saying "wasn't the hospice service so amazing? Didn't they support you and the family in the most compassionate way? Didn't they offer the family help and guidance throughout the whole dying process?" Absolutely, resoundingly, NO. They offered me bereavement services after my dad died, but that's it. Instead, they questioned me and my decisions (again, based off of medical doctors and diagnoses; he had a glioblastoma that left him with tumor-induced dementia and paralyzed on the left side of his body, with several strokes and seizures throughout) and made my life much harder from the hospital through the end of my dad's life. DO NOT use this service.
