The majority of care was done by family with the caregivers providing little more than babysitting services. Our mother experienced a debilitating fall and later a stroke. It was clear that she needed 7x24 professional care but we wanted to keep her safe in her home. We called TheKey and they showed up in force. Within hours, a representative came to assess our needs. An experienced and absolutely wonderful caregiver arrived only a couple hours later. The office staff is available 24hrs/day. Every staffing or care request we've made has been immediately and professionally fulfilled. The caregivers arrive ON TIME, EVERY TIME. No call-offs, no excuses, no drama. They treat our mom and her home with respect. I can't say enough good about the caregivers that we've had. They are professional, caring, patient and extremely well trained.

The only thing that really needed changed was the way the curriculum was set up - instead of passing out a syllabus that told you what would be happening on which day, the instructors sort of just told you the day before what you should have read for tomorrow. That was kind of annoying, especially most people in the evening class are also working full-time during the day. It also created some confusion when one instructor told us one chapter to prepare for the next day but then the next day, the other instructor said we were supposed to go over & be tested on a different chapter. Other than that, I had a great experience and feel well-prepared.

Staff frequently complain about poor communication, and turnover is constant. The scheduling manager provides incorrect information, and the company fails to coordinate properly. In my experience, I was informed only two days before an aide was supposed to assist my 102-year-old grandmother that they had "ended the contract" and no one would be coming--yet the program manager later confirmed that a 30-day notice is required. Overall, BrightStar shows a complete lack of professionalism and respect for clients and staff. I strongly advise against using their services.

Although we are only 3 hours away, we realized during that visit, three hours was way too far to effectively take care of Mom and Dad. Mom has always taken care of everything for Dad. My father has Parkinson's disease. It wasn't until this last visit that my husband and I could clearly see just how badly an extra set of hands was needed for my father's care. We interviewed three Home Health Agencies and without a shadow of a doubt, the entire family chose Assisting Hands. Not only were they competitive from a price standpoint, they were one of the few companies with the credentials we were looking for. We even met the caregivers who would be working with mom and dad before we had to leave to head home! I talk to Linda (Mom and Dad's Caregiver) nearly every night and she feels like a member of our family. I haven't seen Mom and Dad this happy in a very long time. Linda, Mom and Dad, go on outings, the house looks great, mom and dad are well taken care of and my husband and I are actually sleeping at night without worry! We had the biggest decision of our lives, accept a job that would be an unbelievable opportunity for my wife, the kids and I, or turn down the opportunity to stay in Ohio with Mom and Dad. My parents were excited for us and the new possibilities our my career decision could give my family, but they were in denial about how much care my wife and I were providing by living a block away. Dad suffered a stroke in 2010 and his physical condition had really limited the things he could do. Mom never had a driver's license so my wife took them everywhere during the day and in the evenings, I was responsible for transportation. We never minded caring for them; it became second nature for all of us. I saw a commercial for Assisting Hands Home Care and it felt like the commercial and their services were reaching straight out to us! It was as through the stars were aligned and I was meant to see that on TV. It was on a Saturday but I called the number. I couldn't believe, I actually got a live person who had the ability to come out within a few hours of the call and coordinate a complete plan with all of us. The owner even called me herself later that evening and we talked for almost an hour. We had two weeks to get into temporary housing for my new job yet we had everything figured out within 24 hours. Mom and dad were somewhat resistant but after meeting their caregiver, it was like this was just the way things were meant to be. Although we are further away, wither my wife or myself manages to come up one weekend a month to stay with my parents. They look better than when we were taking care of most of their needs. Although we didn't know it at the time, I think the stress and large responsibility weighed on all of us when it was my wife and I as the sole care takers and in turn, my parents had so much guilt but knew deep down then needed us. Let me assure you what a BLESSING this inpatient hospice house is for Columbus. As someone who travels along the East coast providing hospice care for multiple hospitals/hospice, OhioHealth provides top-notch care! These patients/families are not only made comfortable in a beautiful environment, but they are also provided compassion. Based on some of the reviews, some folks simply do not understand that if a patient is placed in a hospice house--they are dying and hospice appropriate. Most of these patients are experiencing symptoms that were too difficult to manage at home or they are here briefly to give the families 5 days of respite. When/how long the patient lives is between the patient and the universe/God. If clinicians could cure the patient, they would. The majority of these patients have reached the end of what aggressive treatments and medicines can cure/fix--to do more would only prolong suffering. Comfort care becomes the priority! Our job is to make sure they are comfortable and provide education for families. As physicians and nurses, we have medications to assist the patient as they near end of life. Social Workers provide resources. Chaplains provide spiritual support. It's a multifaceted approach to put the patient first. Again, I really do hope Columbus realizes what a rare and special gift Kobacker is to the community--many cities are not so fortunate to have inpatient hospice facilities! Blessings!
