Right from walking up the restaurant is attractive. We tried another restaurant first but was sold out. This place is a good second option. I had the goulash for $20. My bf had the pork roast with red cabbage and two potato dumplings. Our meal came out really quick which means it's part of a food line. Definitely skeptical on the quality of food but we enjoyed the meals so o guess good enough. Both meats were flavored well. Red cabbage is fantastic. Goulash sauce was tasty. Spaetzle is chewy. All in all. Very happy about the meal. The service. The ambiance. Giving 4 stars because I think maybe the prices are higher a tad higher then other restaurants that are also very good. My friend and I ate here before our ascension of Mount Zugspitze, as kind of a preparatory meal before the long hike ahead. I had the Schweinshaxe, which is basically a giant pork knuckle, with a gravy sauce and two dumplings on the side. The food was okay, certainly not the best I had. The sauce was a bit on the salty side, and the dumplings were a bit soggy and unpleasantly chewy, but the pork knuckle itself was well cooked, and was deliciously juicy and tender on the inside, so not all was bad. read more

Location and ambience here is 5 star. The service is also quite ok, albeit the head waiter / manager was a grumpy sod and, even our dog did not like him and barked at him (now this is a dog that does not usually bark ;-)). The food here is ok and it seems like a bit of a tourist trap. Value for money is pretty low. The tables were cramped together and if it was a warm day it would have been full and slightly uncomfortable. I had the grilled steak with roasted onions and Bratkartoffle. The dish lacked seasoning and flavour. The steak was a bit chewy and rubbery. It was ok and I ate it, can't say I enjoyed it. Everyone else with me had the same reaction too. It was ok but nothing to write home about. Having been to Garmisch a few times now and having had great food, not sure I will be back here in a hurry. The prices were not reasonable and I don't mind paying more for great food but do have a problem paying more money for ok food. It's location is the draw card and I suppose it will continue to be so. read more

Kind of a tourist trap being located in the heart of the shopping strip. There aren't many other sit down restaurants so you kind of have no choice but to stop by here. The food isn't terrible, but it's also nothing special. Service was good until the end when our server just disappeared on us. We tried to pay at the front with another server but he kind of shooed us away saying your server will take care of you. So it felt like because he wasn't our server, he can't help us. Prices were a little on the high side too for the quality. read more

Went here for the Kaiserschmarren, and it was worth every penny. THE best we had in our life! Great portion size, incredibly fluffy yet savory, raisins, compote, so good that we drove back from Munich the day after again. The Obatzer (German beer cheese) was great as well, served with local bread. Parking is plentiful and it takes about 5 minutes to walk to this place from where we parked which wasn't necessarily close. We highly recommend this place for the original Bavarian experience. read more

On a sunny day in Garmisch, this is a lovely place to sit outside and people-watch over lunch. The menu is extensive and very German. There are a handful of vegetarian options, mostly standard Bavarian fare such as spätzle, creamed mushrooms with dumplings, and cheese plates. There are also daily specials - I had the pasta with cheese and arugula sauce. Amusingly (but not surprisingly), every single one of the salads comes with meat on top. read more

We were at the Mohrenplatz Wirtshaus in the biergarten on Thursday, August 21st, from 6:30 - 8:30 pm. This is a beautiful new restaurant in Garmisch with a large biergarten, where one should be able to enjoy a nice meal in a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere. Unfortunately, this was not our experience. Although the food was adequate - I'll give the food three stars - two people in our party of four ordered hirschbratwurste (deer sausage) but received Nueremburger rostbratwurstl instead. Also, the beer we ordered was not chilled correctly; too warm. However, the primary problem was not the food, but the waiter. Several different people waited on our table outside in the biergarten; at least three young women and one waiter. The women were pleasant enough, but the waiter came across as arrogant and condescending. Although we had already told one waitress that we would order our food when the rest of our party arrived in a few minutes, the waiter came along and asked whether we would be ordering food. The impression we got was that if we were not going to order food, we should finish our beers and leave. Since when does somebody get chased out of a biergarten for drinking a beer? Later, when we had just finished our meals - and were in no hurry to leave as is the custom in Germany - the waiter came along and asked if we wanted an after-dinner schnapps. On the face of it, there is nothing wrong with that, but again, the waiter's demeanor was gave the impression that now that we had finished our dinner, we should have a schnapps, pay our bill and be on our way. Before you chalk up my perceptions to "cultural differences" or a language barrier, please understand that I have been coming to Germany for nearly 30 years, I have lived in Germany for over 7 years, I have visited Garmisch-Partenkirchen for about 24 years, and I speak decent German. I know when I'm being treated correctly and when I'm getting the snob-treatment, which was the case on this evening. I don't know whether the waiter acted the way he did because we are Americans, or maybe because we are foreigners in general, or if he just has a personality flaw. I have experienced this prejudice on many occasions in Germany, but of course it has no place at a restaurant in an international resort area. I'll be sure to warn the other Americans here about the service at Mohrenplatz Wirthaus. Let me contrast our experience at Mohrenplatz Wirtshaus & Biergarten with the dinner we had at Zur Wildschutz, located directly across the Mohrenplatz, two days earlier. Not only was the food much superior for about the same price per plate, but the service was excellent. Our waitress knew her job, she was attentive, kind and friendly. I would recommend this restaurant over "Mohrenplatz" any time, but be sure to make a reservation; Zur Wildschutz is always full. Good food and great service leads to a full restaurant! read more
