Fish on Fire has all weather sidewalk seating

I love Fish on Fire, from concept to food on the plate. Sidewalk dining at its best, Fish on Fire offers delicous fresh fish at a reasonable price and it's always cooked to perfection. This is one of the few places I order grilled - oh I know should always go for this healthier option, but at other places I'm usually won over by the idea of golden fried crumbs, however the coating on the grilled fish here is the best I've tasted, providing a herby, crispy finish to the fish. The grilled snapper is my favourite. Let's talk about the chips. This is one of the very few places around which still serves the broad, flat kind, but again the main attraction is in the crispy, seasoned finish. All meals are served with your choice of salad and appear on a generously sized oval platter. The staff are friendly and efficient and the owner, a genuine soccer nut, is always on hand to say hi. While I always order the snapper grill, one of my friends usually goes for the hot seafood platter for one, and another really likes the latte, so for me, this is a great allrounder, as we sit in a covered sidewalk area and watch the world go by.

While I was out in Cleveland, I got the craving for a roast chicken and gravy sandwich. It's an old…read moreschool love of mine that keeps coming back to haunt me. As I was walking down Bloomfield Street, I came across a sign that said "Food Bar". This was it. Right up there on the board, along with hamburgers and beef ribblets was 'roast chicken and gravy sandwich' $4.50. I ordered myself one as well as a small orange slushie ($2.00). I figured if I was going to indulge myself I may as well go the whole hog. After my friends placed their orders, we sat down and waited for our food to come out. We smoked a cigarette and waited some more. We drained our slushies and then waited some more. Finally, our meals came out on a big sandwich tray. The 'Breakfast A' choice looked amazing in that old school home cooked way. There was a mountain of bacon on top of two slices of white bread, two eggs (cooked in frying rings), a sausage and half a roasted tomato. It was the breakfast of my childhood! My roast chicken and gravy sandwich was amazing. Both chicken and gravy layers were generous, and it was squished between two slices of wholemeal bread. It would have been better in a bun, but still, it was pretty good the way it was. The food is just as you'd expect it to be at a place like this. Fatty, salty and in some way, deeply satisfying. The service was prompt, but it took forever for our food to come out to us. I was also wrongly charged for my food (by $1 so I let them keep it). I had a mixed reaction to this place, but realistically, anywhere that still sells roast chicken gravy sandwiches gets my vote. Oh, steer clear of the Pineapple slushie. It does kind of taste like urine in a cup. Orange and lime are delicious though.
