What an awesome place! We started a 10 gallon tank for my kid and were looking to add some fish (take your time). We had gone to Petsmart (2 of them) and Pet Supplies Plus. We were not overly impressed with either. We made our way out to Fish Planet based on yelp reviews and were so glad we did. Amazing selection! Great prices! Fantastic service! Steve, the owner, was so nice and helpful. I wasn't afraid to ask for advice and he was happy to give it. We picked up 4 different small beginner fish to get started per his recommendation. Been there a few times to get some fish and had bad luck. all they care about is water quality so they can say it's you that is the problem. I have excellent water quality and every fish I got from there ended up dying in 3 days or brought some fun disease home! Last fish I got wiped out our entire tank. I am so pissed I will never step foot in there again. And yes the owner does have mood swings. One minute nice as can be the next mean as hell. There are better fish stores out there. I would stay away. People have posted the big pet chains are worse and after this place I have to laugh at that. Stay here and enjoy your overpriced sick fish. read more

Not a big store but what you find is high quality, well cared for fish. The owner, Steve, is a walking encyclopedia of knowledge and he is always willing to give good advice that is worth any purchase made at the store. I have tried big box stores to cherry pick deals but in the end, the low price paid does not make up for the potential for a nasty fish disease outbreak in your tank. If you really care about your fresh and salt water fish, this is the place to go. Steve uses and tries all the tank products he sells so he knows first hand what works and what doesn't. Fish planet is an excellent freshwater and salt water aquarium store. The employees are very knowledgable about the animals and the supplies and were very helpful. They have a great selection of products and will order anything you need that is not in stock. It's also really convenient that they have ready-to-use fresh & salt water available for very cheap. I will definitely be doing my aquarium business with Fish Planet in the future! read more

The first time I walked into Fish Planet I was amazed. No fish store that I have ever walked into was as clean, open or as friendly as this store. The owner is Full of knowledge and wants to help you set up the best tank possible. He is also honest, which is hard to find now-a-days. He will tell you what fish will be compatible in your tank and what fish won't be. Although he appreciates the business you give him, he makes sure you're not just spending your money so that he can make a profit, he makes sure that you are getting everything you absolutly need to keep your tank healthy. I started with a Fresh water tank and was so amazed by how clean his tanks were and how bright and healthy his corals/salt water fish looked, that I bought my first salt water tank there and I could not be happier. I have checked out a few other fish stores and I think I will stick to Fish Planet! read more

Fantastic place and very affordable! I'm a planted tank enthusiast and this store inspired me! I've never seen tanks so well-kept, clean, no leaking water. Also, the store was well- lit and prices clearly marked. No dead fish in any of the tanks and the cichlids were like puppies looking for someone to adopt them. Been a long time loyal customer to steve and his store. Today I walk in and gave him my emerald crab. All fish stores give store credit, I bought it from him but he said no, so no big deal. I needed salt water and gave him my 1 gallon containers like I have been every week and he filled them half way on all of them. When I asked him to fill it up all the way he said when you buy it in the store its only half full. What stores do you shop at steve? The containers I always bring in are spring water 1 gal. containers. He charges $1.25 a gallon, charged me $5.40, he taxes the water, for half filled containers. His employees always fill up the water all the way. When he started everything was good, but now it's going downhill, I'm in favor of local small business, but no longer will I or anyone I know shop here. Treating customers fairly is all I'm saying. I have a 135 gal saltwater that has been up and stable for over 20 years. Fish Planet has been my "go to" store for several years. Steve had prior stores in other locations and I have followed him from store to store. He is knowledgeable, helpful, and willing to spend time with customers. His suggestions for fish, care, maintenance and equipment have always been good. I highly recommend his store and him. This is a classic case of paying the price to get good service and someone who knows what they are talking about. Expertise is worth a slight cost difference! read more

The customer service here was horrible. I came in with many questions about what new fish I could potentially purchase with my current aquarium. However, none of the high school aged staff, who barely appeared old enough to work, were able to answer any of my questions. In addition, the fish and corals here are overpriced, and the selection to choose from is very limited. I can't understand why so many people seem to write positive things about this place. It's really that not that impressive. There are a variety of other, much better aquarium stores in the area to choose from, including Old Orchard Aquarium, in Skokie, and Sea Schor, in Buffalo Grove. read more
