I bought a paddle at Robinson's General Store in Dorset in the early 1970s when I was in my teens. It was my prized and cherished paddle and took me on many canoe trips over the years. The blade was straight, the grip a perfect fit in my hand, and it was light and strong and so beautiful. Long story short, it went missing last fall! I was very upset and finally took to the internet in hopes of finding another like it. My paddle had no markings but the grip at the top was distinctive. My search led me first to Ray Kettlewell (retired!!!) and then to Fishell Paddles. I sent Fishell an email with my story and a photo of my paddle. I didn't think I'd be able to replace it, but the grip seemed similar to the Fishell paddles and I was hopeful.
Greg Fishell replied to my email within a few hours and told me that my lost paddle looked a lot like one of Ray Kettlewell's "Tripper" paddles. He told me Ray sometimes used to sell "seconds", that had some minor defect, without his logo and there was a good chance that the general store in Dorset picked up a few from him for resale. He told me that Fishell paddles had Ray's original Tripper paddle template and that they could make me a replacement...if I was interested!
I placed the order for a cherry Tripper within a few hours (Greg thought my paddle looked to be made of cherry from the photo I had sent) and I also ordered a Modified Special (maple) and two Modified Ottertails (one maple, one cherry)...so my family would no longer need to borrow mine.
My paddles arrived today, about two weeks from my order and I am thrilled! Fishell did a wonderful job! The paddles are everything I hoped for and more. I love all four of them, but the Tripper is special and as close to my lost paddle as one could hope. I think the blade is slightly thicker than my old paddle and the balance point slightly lower (right at the blade) but it is still light and flexes only slightly with applied pressure. l am glad I ordered it in the lustrous smooth oil finish (same as my original) and my husband is very happy with his shiny varnished Modified Special. The socks that come with each paddle are a nice bonus and will help protect the blades when not in use.
Greg Fishell was a great help from start to finish: his quick response to my initial inquiry, his understanding and keen eye in identifying my paddle from the photos I sent, and his skill and craftsmanship in making its replacement and the other three paddles. I know we will prize and cherish all four for decades to come. read more
