I immediately knew what I was getting after seeing the case of empire biscuits or what they called Belgian biscuits. My mom went for a gingerbread man cookie and the boyfriend went for a fruit slice with lemon frosting. My biscuit was delicious as empire biscuits almost always are, but my mom wasn't a fan of her rather hard gingerbread man cookie. She said it was really hard to bite in to it was so hard, and didn't eat much of it. I tried the fruit slice, and it was interesting. The boyfriend mentioned it's much better with vanilla frosting, the lemon frosting didn't do much for it. There were loads of things to purchase, including whole cakes and savoury goods. Also, some weird 24 bakery machine, which I was curious about but didn't try out. I'd be in trouble if that machine was anywhere near where I live. Thankfully it's here, in St. Andrews. I might be tempted to stop here again if in the area, but if there's another local bakery, I would definitely check them out to see how they differ.

We came across F & D while shopping in Cupar and we were lured in by an unbelievable window display (I have included photos because as I said you would not believe me otherwise). We hit it about lunch time and decided to give their steak bridies a try, OMG, they were great (I wonder if they ship to the States), the steak moist and the pastry nice and fluffy. I would have given them five stars just for that, but then we tried their coffee towers, wow! The service was friendly even though the place was fairly busy, if I ever make it back to Fife this is one place I'm certainly returning to without a doubt! Cupar is a small town just outside St Andrews which happens to be where I grew up. Considering its…read moresize this place has a disproportionate amount of bakeries- Fisher and Donaldsons x 2, Carltons, Stuarts, Adamsons.... Each has their own merits, special treats that are better at one than the other. For example I would rate a Stuarts Scotch pie as the best of the bunch but would visit Carltons if it was a Macaroni pie I was after (and they wonder why Scotland has so much heart disease). Fisher and Donaldson's definitely rates itself as the King of the bunch. It's prices are all a little higher and its packaging a little posher but when it comes to cakes there is no doubt it's the best. It's Fudge Doughnuts and Coffee Towers are famous throughout Fife but I'll try my best to describe a few of the other treats too. Fudge Doughnuts, as they sound, doughnuts filled with fudge custard and then topped with a fudgey glaze -more than one of these will send you in to a diabetic coma. Coffee Towers, choux pastry filled with coffee cream with a little chocolate button on the top- a take on a French pastry but bigger with more cream! Strawberry Tarts, a tart case filled with cream, topped with a strawberry and then covered in sugary syrup- there is an art to eating these without covering your face in red goo. Lemon Swishes, lemon cream layered with pastry and icing- a more refined choice for the adult cake lover. The Frog, sponge, fondant cream and icing shaped into a bright green and pink frog- my childhood favourite, scoop the cream out the frogs mouth with your finger before munching away at the spongey base! A taxi driver in Edinburgh once told me that whenever a driver in his company got a fare through to Fife it was obligatory that they stopped in on Fisher and Donaldsons to get an order for everyone. To begin with, don't let the name of the cafe confuse you... yes, it IS a dairy with great ice…read morecream... but it also serves food, including sandwiches, scones, tea, and breakfast (i've uploaded a pic of the menu). Yelp has rejected my recommendation of calling it Scottish Food or a Cafe and has kept it listed simply as Ice Cream and Frozen Yogurt (neither of which I've tried here yet). There is some good food in Perth even though you may have to pay a bit more for it than you would in the bigger cities of Scotland. But just outside Perth, you find some farm shops with some incredible locally sourced food. Stewart Tower Dairy is one of these. Most people would have found this place either by word of mouth or from signs on the A9. I actually discovered this place whilst road biking with a friend. And wow.... so glad I know about Stewart Tower. I have only stopped here on my bike rides and they're very welcoming to cyclists, even sweaty ones. The staff here are super friendly. They also have a nice shop inside with local and/or gourmet foods. Most of the time I have had just a pot of tea with a scone. I have learnt recently to ask for the Tea Pigs Everyday blend. It's even better than the regular house blend, so I would recommend trying that or one of the other specialty teas. On another stop, I was trying to decide whether or not to push through and have a late lunch at home or whether I should have lunch at Stewart Tower Dairy.... AND... maybe I gave in and had lunch there. This was partly to do with the fact that the menu had minestrone that day, and I definitely didn't have homemade soup at my flat. So I had to have it. And I ordered a Coronation Chicken sandwich to go along with it, served on malted brown bread. It was SOOO good. I often feel like Coronation Chicken is a good test run for sandwiches for any cafe, and I wasn't disappointed. So... my advice is as followed: if you're in Perth and have a car, then there are two places you should check out. Stewart Tower Dairy is one of them. And you won't be disappointed. It's about a 10-15 minute drive out of town. And if you happen to have just biked through Little Glenshee, then reward yourself with a scone, tray bake or some ice cream. No need to push through and bike home without a break ;) Oh and did I mention they have goats and lambs for the kids to see outside? So bring the kids, but maybe not on your bike.
