Fit Gym is on 44th and Chestnut and it's a good alternative if you're a college student nearby. I came here when Penn's gym was closed and while there are a few other gyms nearby, this one was by far the cheapest. I believe they're moving to a new location soon which will have parking. Their Facebook is where they make most of their updates: it has their most recent hours and they recently started having classes again. I'd suggest joining when they have a deal going on. It's a really bare-bones, old school workout spot. It has everything that you need to get the job done and that's pretty much it. Downstairs is where most of the free weights and racks are, while upstairs has the cardio and weight machines. Their equipment is pretty worn and by midday, their weights are arbitrarily reracked and scattered. Unfortunately they don't have a ton of lighter dumbbells to workout with. They do have a bunch of weights that are insanely heavy and I've never seen anyone go near them. All in all, the gym has enough equipment for you to get in a full body workout and it meets standard expectations. TLDR: A bare-bones, old school workout spot that has enough for you to get in a workout, but don't expect fancy new equipment or anything flashy. read more

For what it is, I'm super excited to be starting at this gym. While there isn't anything new or flashy, they've got the basics with some devoted patrons and class leaders. The spin classes look so fun and high energy, the Zumba glasses are packed with fun dancers and cool music, and there are enough weights to go around. The front desk staff member got us signed up really quick with no hassle, and we could start same day with the coupon I got. Had a nice hour long workout. I don't get training, or attend any classes here, so my opinion of this gym is based solely on my personal work out basis. I have been going to Fit Gym 3-4 times a week for the last few weeks. Fit gym is split into two levels, with the lower level featuring old school weight lifting equipment (emphasis on old): squat bars, bench press, racks of dumbbells so heavy they're never actually moved, etc. This is where the real body builders go, where every dumbbell is a set of small barbell weights afixed by loose bolts, and you have to eyeball your dumbbell weights since the markings have long worn off, and nothing is predictably reracked. Electrolyte mixes are for sale at the desk. Since I am no body builder, I've transitioned to sticking to the second level. Upstairs, there are a few more small dumbbell racks featuring 50lbs and under weights, still reracked randomly, but these racks feature the weights for those of us with less built biceps formed from single pieces of metal, with legible imprinted numbers on the sides. The second floor is also where you would find all the more 'modern' weight lifting machines, as well as all the cardio equipment. The latter bit being wisely placed since the fans above are needed to fight the buildings trappings of humidity. Service throughout the gym can be a bit lackluster. When I was still visiting the downstairs, the water fountain was out of service for a week's worth of visits. There was another week where the middle of the room paper towel dispenser upstairs was empty every time I came in. If there are cleaning solution bottles (in my experience there was often one present downstairs, but never with solution in it), the spray nozzles are just as likely non-functional. And there have been some treadmills that have been non functional throughout my tenure that I'm genuinely curious if will ever be fixed. Fit Gym does have well rounded enough equipment to provide a full workout, but it's almost aggressively 'no frills.' read more

We have been going to Fit Gym for the past two years. A gym is a gym for the most part. You go in, you work out, you leave. Usually I have no problems with my experience, and the prices are low. The classes are great and the personal trainers are definitely a major selling point for them. However, the management and staff are pretty terrible. Whenever there is a problem that we complain about, their solution is to post a passive-aggressive note and call the problem "solved." There are people taking up all the lockers because they don't take them off before they leave? Post a note. People are putting too much weight on the bars and bending them? Post a note. People aren't returning the weights after they take them to another room? You got it. Post a note. At any moment, count on multiple machines being broken, and the bathroom not having soap or toilet paper. The gym rarely gets cleaned and half the machines are broken or not fully functional. Don't get me wrong. I love this gym and want to see it do better. I'm not going anywhere else any time soon, but there are just things and policies that need to be changed. read more

This place is not up to anyone's standards... Honestly, if you only care about working out and the experience isn't important, this place could work for you... For everyone else: The gym seems like it was built in the heyday of the lifting greats, but was never upgraded after that. Equipment is old, rusty, or sketchy. The gym doesn't look like it has been cleaned in months and expect something to be broken in there. The gym has 2 floors and the top floor is more modern, but still suffer from inadequate upgrades. The locker room has many broken lockers for common use, and the only good lockers are for rent only so you can't really bring your thing here. The worst part is the price of the gym. They will try to charge you 30+ for a month depending on the package you get. If you try to get a trial pass, they will charge you 15$ for 3 days and apply that to your membership if you decide to signup and I imagine most people don't once they try out the gym. There isn't many options in the area, but make sure you take a free tour beforehand so you can see if it really is the right FIT for you. read more

Customer service is terrible--the employees have no knowledge of the gym policies, or even how to use the computer. Good luck speaking on the phone with manager, or anyone for that matter, during the day. The phone constantly rings, and getting a call back is impossible. Restrooms/changing areas aren't always guaranteed to be clean. The second floor is frequently overheated because the fans are intermittently on or off. I really only joined to use the elliptical machines, but I probably won't renew after this year. FIT gym could be better, but much of the staff don't seem interested in contributing toward that cause. read more

Fit Gym is a very good gym if you want a no-nonsense experience. Most of the negative ratings comes from people that are so used to the corporate, "Planet Fitness" lifestyle. You can't use your Wifi? Cry me a freaking river. I am so happy that the gym is weeding out all of the posers. If you want to walk for a half hour and watch Netflix, go to PF. Alright, I am gonna be the first. I am a Penn graduate student. I don't go to the Penn gym because I don't want to compete with undergraduate frat boys for a turn at the weights. Instead, I prefer the Fit Gym. The Fit Gym is a neighborhood establishments with no frills. However, they do have a great laid-back atmosphere, a diverse group of people whom you can get to know on a first-name basis (nice gym rat types who help spot a woman on the bench), and all the exercise equipments you'd ever need for a great workout. In addition, they also offer kickboxing and yoga classes. If you're looking for a gym that is more about community (that supports you in your effort to get fit and healthy) than fancy elliptical machines, give the Fit Gym a try. read more

Tonight I'm going to write a review of Fit instead of going there. Just joined in December and got a great deal. Danny (owner?) was really flexible and super nice about setting me up. I decided to work with a personal trainer because they had such good deals - 10 session for 300 bucks. Hassan and I have met 4 times now and I LOVE it. After watching a couple seasons of The Biggest Loser I was kind of scared that he was going to be mean to me, like scare me into losing weight, but Hassan is simply helpful and extremely personable. Sooo awesome to have someone show me how to maximize my time there. The vibe at the gym is so comfortable, there seems to be very little judging, which is great. I have never had to wait for machines, there are a lot of smiley people around and also a lot of friendly, badass dudes. I think there are a fair amount of mixed martial arts fighters that work out there. I like Fit - it is a diverse, neighborhood gym with a knowledgeable staff. read more

Bathroom was dingy as hell but I got a dope workout in. I still washed my ass afterwards though lol. I was in town for the weekend for a visit and needed a place to get a workout in so I purchased a day pass. The gym had everything I needed including that old school hole in the wall feel to let you know you're in a real gym. I knew I was in the right place when I looked up from my sit ups and noticed some old school footage of Joe Frazier fights playing on one of the monitors. Truth be told if you don't like this gym then you didn't really come to work out. I even noticed some group classes going on in other parts of the gym. Only reason they get four instead of five stars is because their locker situation could use some work. Had a hard time finding an available functioning locker I could comfortably lock my belongs in. A good amount of them weren't functioning properly to the point of not locking/closing completely. But otherwise I can't emphasize enough how great this gym was and how real my workout turned out to be. They even gave me a free day pass for my next visit when I checked in with the Yelp app. I was planning on coming back regardless the next time I was in town but even more enticing with a day pass to appreciate. read more

Fit Gym is no frills man but I love it. As a chick and a pretty fat chick at that (I've got a lot to lose) I find most gyms intimidating. Over the course of the past 2 months I've grown to like it here. No it's not full of shiny new untouched equipment but it's air conditioned, got some good classes (I take Zumba 3 times a week and long for the day when I can take the boxing \ MMA conditioning classes!). It's got multiple sets of any kind of machine you need, and a bunch of free weights, elliptical, stair climbers, treadmills, stationary bikes and I always arrive right after their spin class. Plus their adding a new class room, so I'm excited to see what new classes they'll be able to offer. While the first floor is full of free weights and a it's a bit intimidating for a novice, I'm almost in my 3rd month of membership and even little old weak me gets downstairs with the buff guys and lifts. There's never any eye rolling or snark. The trainers say hello to me whenever I walk in and genuinely seem happy that I'm working out and losing weight. I like it here and unless I move out of the area I intend to stay with Fit Gym. read more

Busted is the word that goes through my time the whole time I'm at Fit Gym. Since getting a car it was too expensive to park outside of the Drexel Rec Center and I was in search of a new gym. Parking is probably the best thing about Fit Gym. Everything inside is just sort of sad and dirty. The downstairs gym area has a lot of weight lifting stuff and is frequented by very intense men with huge muscles. Upstairs there is cardio equipment and more anaerobic machines but they are all falling apart and dingy. Today I tried doing ab work in a small "stretching" area with a broken mirror, mold stains on the ceiling, and grungy yoga mats. I tried getting on a stability ball and it half-deflated. I went to the bathroom and realized there was no toilet paper in the stall. Overall dinginess I can handle, but what I find really annoying is that the Wifi does not reach the second floor of the gym at all. One of the main reasons I chose Fit was was because they had free wifi, which I wanted to use to watch Netflix while I worked out. What is the point of having free wifi if you only can access it in one small part of the building? The staff I've interacted with are friendly but rarely present. Sadly I paid for a year at once so I am stuck trying to make the best of a bad situation at this point. It's really too bad because if they put even just a little bit of effort into cleaning up the place and fixing the wifi and it could really be a great gym. This gym was kind of a disappointment. I wasn't expecting to feel like an outcast almost immediately in my free day. I'm a skinny white guy and from the get go I didn't feel welcome here. There are 2 sections to the gym the upstairs which has almost no free weights and very outdated machines and is mostly for cardio. Cardio stuff is great. The dude at the front pretty much told me to go upstairs and stay there because downstairs was the heavy stuff. All I'm trying to do is get my 15 lbs of muscle back after breaking my collar bone and I'm just getting SEGREGATED here. read more

There are certain drawbacks to Fit Gym--the dirty mats, the shady location, the outdated decor, the inconsistency of classes, and the fact that no one seems to wipe off their machines after use. But none of them are big enough to outweigh the pluses--the all-new ellipticals and treadmills, the more intuitive layout, the juice bar, the free weights, and the PRICE. For 33 dollars a month, I can bring my own disinfectant and I can do Zumba on Youtube if need be. And it's NEVER too crowded when I go--a huge plus! Love it. read more

Fit Gym is not for the faint of heart. You won't find a lunk alarm here. The weights won't be sparkling clean and it won't always smell like fresh roses. If you want free pizza and candy go back to planet fitness. But if you actually want to get in a good workout and challenge yourself this is the place to do it. It feels like an old school gym and the culture does too. It's about friendship and everyone improving in whatever area they're focused on. You can always ask people for advice and the staff is awesome. If you become a regular it starts to feel like a family. It's a lot of friendly folks who like to lift heavy sh*t. Period. That being said, you don't have to be a powerlifter or bodybuilder to make it work for you. Lord knows I'm not. But I have improved immensely over the past three years thanks to all the tips and techniques I've gotten from fellow members and staff. The reason I'm taking a star off is because some of the equipment has been out of commission for a while, and a lot of the barbells are broken or old. With some simple fixed equipment and new bars it would do wonders. There's something for everyone here, it just needs a bit of an update. read more

I started here today because I bought a 30 day groupon. The okapi is large, wasn't overly crowded has a small range of classes and there is free unlimited parking outside. All great, but the place seemed dead. Not like no people but like no staff. I literally saw one one person working here and she was working at the front.it was very odd. I'm excited to try these classes and see what they really have to offer. Monthly rates aren't crazy and they provide not only student discounts but discounts for military, government workers and I believe like civil servants and teachers. So I've been coming here since October and I originally would've given this place 3.5 stars. And that was pushing it. I should note that this is my 2nd gym, as I am registered at my jobs gym but I was looking for something within walking distance to my place. I had originally had some issues with the place but put my comments aside because the staff and members are really nice and I like the updated cardio equipment. Lo and behold fit gym advertises on groupon and this place turns into a shitshow. All the decent machines completely occupied, lockers nearly full and definitely not a "lunk free" atmosphere. I'm highly disappointed that Fit Gym sold out (and apparently oversold) to groupon and as a result I will not be renewing my membership next month. For the price, it's much more cost efficient to go to a gym with more amenities and accommodations/space to fit its needs. Fit gym was definitely not ready for such a great influx of new customers and the change definitely has done a disservice to its members that held accounts pre-Groupon. read more

I love my neighborhood gym! Would never think of going to a gym near campus so when our apartment building offered free membership with the lease I couldn't say no. The gym staff are so friendly and so are most of the members. All of the classes are free. I was taking this amazing yoga class there for awhile but had scheduling conflicts. I highly recommend Isabel! Its never so crowded that you can't use the machine that you want but it can get a little scummy around the edges.. sometimes machines don't work, sometimes they do. And they need a really good vacuum. But I'm still a Fit fan for now. read more

Like others have said, this is a no-nonsense gym. I went here for Memorial Day since Pottruck was closed and really enjoyed my experience. Day passes go for $10 and if you're a local you might be able to try it free if you're thinking of joining. I used the cardio equipment on the 2nd floor and the weight room. There were 3 squat racks and I never had to wait long for a piece of equipment. The only drawback is that some of the plates were dirty, but what can you do. I like supporting a local business, it feels less anonymous than Pottruck, and I'm sad sad I've only discovered this gym a few months before moving away. They have group fitness classes, some of which were going on during my visit. The spin class looked high energy and the music was good, I'll have to give it a try in the coming months! read more

I was visiting my sister for the Broad Street run and there was no way I was going to go 4 days without going to the gym. So I looked up the closet gym and Fit Gym popped up and it was awesome! Everyone from the staff to the patrons were amazing. Normally I have to ask for a spotter but everyone was so friendly they all offered with barely a look in their direction. Best gym I've been to. Almost everyone in there is there to do serious work. Not like Planet Fitness or Sweat or some fancy health club. This gym is a gym for gym rats and hard workers. Even if you don't come in feeling 100% enthusiastic, seeing what other people are doing will get you there. Also, it gives you the chance to shoot for those 225 dumbbells...someday...maybe. 3.5 stars, really. It's the cheapest gym you'll find around West Philly, and if what you're looking for is a no-frills gym with basic cardio machines, weights, and some functioning weight machines, then it's not bad. It's not the cleanest-- I'd suggest showering at home, you might have to run a spray bottle to the front desk to ask them to refill it, and I'd bring your own yoga mat. It's a diverse mix of clientele here, which I like. It's a good mix of students, working folks, and longtime area locals & meatheads. You'll find people in grungy sweats, people in crop tops, young and old folks, meatheads and those who just come for cardio, etc, here. The downstairs is a little intimidating if you're new to weightlifting just because there are a lot of serious weightlifters here. My big issue though is how frequently their machines break and how infrequently they're repaired. The leg press upstairs, which someone had previously mentioned you already couldn't adjust, is now officially broken. The tricep machine upstairs has also been broken for well over 6 months at this point, as also mentioned. The weight pin in one of the pully machines has been jammed into a high weight, AND the handle of the weight pin has broken off, so it's basically unusable unless you need that weight (there's thankfully several other pully machines, though). There's an elliptical machine that practically screeches, & it's been like that for over 2 years now (you learn to have a special hatred for anyone who uses that machine). The other elliptical machines, the ones w/o the moving arms, are all breaking down and they're down to only 2. It seems they've lost several of their bikes over the years. I believe the stair climbers, the ones that are like actual stairs, have all broken down & have been removed too. I know it's a cheap, local gym and they have to work within their budget, but the number of broken machines is quickly adding up. They installed tanning beds sometime w/in the last two years, which I've literally never seen anyone use-- that money could have probably been better spent maintaining their equipment, imo. That being said, there are plenty of newer-ish treadmills & ellipticals that are still in good working order, there are plenty of weights and kettlebells, and it's rarely so busy that you have to wait long for a machine or weights (and almost never for cardio). I haven't been to any of their classes yet, but they seem really high-energy and awesome. Front staff is friendly, but don't come here expecting they're going to kiss your ass just b/c you pay a monthly membership. The passive-aggressive signs everyone keeps mentioning is more or less just Philly's wisemouth style, really. I'd still take Fit Gym over any of the bougie, try hard, $80/mo gyms in the city. I just joined this week. I was surprised to find a cool gym like this in West Philly. So far it's been pretty empty (though it is the slow season) and blissfully undergrad-free. Super friendly staff, low-key gym feel, off-street parking lot, relatively affordable, locally owned. It has plenty of equipment, though the actual building may be dated and it's in a slighty strange area, it is so worth it for the price and location (I didn't want to join to Penn gym, and it's in a nicer area than the West Philly YMCA). Reminds me of a privately-owned gym I worked at back home, except Fit Gym has much more updated cardio equipment (it's pretty new). read more

The clientele is typical west philly meaning completely different people with different goals and methods, and people are friendly and helpful, and so I feel quite comfortable here. I have been going to this gym for a while, and I really like it. It is rarely crowded and I never have to wait for the cardio machines. It seems they are trying to add new classes (Insanity and Spinning), which I am happy about. However, recently I feel that things have gone dowhill a bit. I've noticed that it is really dirty and it seems like the place never gets cleaned. If you look on the lockers as you walk into the women's dressing room, they are incredibly dirty. It that mouse droppings up there? Gross! Also, the last two times I tried to shower there, there was no soap in the dispensers. Some might say--bring your own soap! But if you randomly decide to stop filling the soap dispensers, I am not prepared! Also, they are many hand written notes left all over the gym, saying things like: "We close at 10pm. You are not special! Get your ass out." Anyway, I will keep going because it is reasonably priced and convenient. But I do wish they would hire a cleaning service! read more

A friend asked today which gym I go to and if I would recommend it - so I told her the truth. If you want to go to a gym where you can always lay your hands on the weights you want, where equipment is well maintained, and that is clean then Fit Gym is NOT the gym for you. Things will be broken for months and sometimes years at a time. The upstairs leg press machine has been unadjustable for as long as I can remember, so if you are under 6ft tall good luck using it. The upstairs tricep press machine has been broken for at least half a year. When I asked when it would be fixed I was told a new belt had been ordered and it would be fixed "soon." That was last winter. These are just two examples that illustrate the unbelievably lengthy periods of time it takes for anything that is broken to be fixed at Fit Gym - believe me, there are many more. Part of the problem may be that nobody who works here seems to be proactive. I have never seen any of the employees doing anything to maintain the equipment or check its condition. The weights are always a mess so unless you want to go searching around the gym and between floors you may be S.O.L. The only solution the staff came up with was to post a passive aggressive threat directed at those who do not rack their weights, which has been totally ineffective. I think that a big part of the problem is that it is not always clear where the weights go (they are not well organized) and when people arrive in the morning the weights are all over the place, setting a messy precedent for the day. Again, I have never seen anyone who works here attempting to organize or put away the weights when the situation gets out of hand. Finally, the gym has clearly not gone through a deep clean in what I imagine must be years. Someone does occasionally mop and vacuum some of the high traffic areas but when you get close to the machines.equipment you can see years of dust. The rugs in the locker room and upstairs are stained and look filthy. They keep buying mats for stretching that disintegrate within a week so after you stretch check yourself for flecks of purple or blue rubber. The only reason this gym does not get one star is that the people who go to this gym are warm, friendly, and all-around amazing. I've been going to this gym for about three years now and had recommended it to a few friends as a solid, no-frills, affordable place to work out. But given how long it takes things to get fixed, the frustration of not being able to find the weights I need, and how dirty this place always is I can't recommend Fit Gym to my friends anymore. read more

As the other reviewers said, this is a no frills gym. I joined this gym through "Global Fit", which is in partnership with my employer's health care coverage. You pay a discounted rate through Global Fit. There is free off street parking in a small fenced in lot behind the gym. The cardio machines and treadmills were the latest to be updated. However, the other machines seem to look like they have been through the ringer. Majority of the photos taken of this gym and posted on Yelp was probably taken when the place was newly opened. Because now, March 2014 a lot of the equipment is either broken, signs of wear and tear, and really needs an upgrade, plus the place needs daily cleaning. I hope they replace the ones that is in really bad shape. I gave it 4 stars because I like coming here. I don't ask for much: close to home (check), free off street parking (check), reasonably priced (check), varied weight machines (check), cable/pulley machine (check), and the most important requirement of all........no waiting to use an equipment at all (a big fat check). I love it when I don't have to wait to use an equipment because it is never crowded at all during the time I am at the gym (7am - 10am). The workers here are nice, same too with the people I workout with. I credit Fit Gym for being the reason for my 25 lbs weight loss for two months now since joining. And this is all from just doing weight bearing exercises. I hope management continually updates and replaces the machines that needed it, so I can still be here 20 years from now. read more

By far my favorite gym in Philadelphia. I was very skeptical about any gym because I just graduated and I wasn't looking forward to actually paying to workout. When I first signed up, I used a Groupon which was $40 for 3 months so I signed up! This gym really has every machine possible. Everyone from the regulars to the work staff are really friendly and very knowledgeable about fitness. Unlike other gyms, they do not bombard with you with crazy emails, sign-ups for PTs, or have any ridiculous rules like "No Deadlifting". The only thing bad I have to say is that their machines are out-dated but in no way to they effect my workouts. I never feel intimidated being in the weight room, its actually motivating being around a bunch of fit people who want to help. I recently moved so I am no longer in the area but whenever I get the chance on the weekends, I def head over to Fit! It's like a little Fit Family. Haha! read more

I was a member of FitGym from 2010-2013 (I've since moved to Colorado), and I MISS fitgym!!!!! Don gave the BEST spin classes in the WORLD. Think: pumping r&b music, flashing lights, awesome workout, and the best atmosphere, and I still cant find a better spin class anywhere in the US. Amazing.
