Unlike a lot of larger gym's that lose that personal connection, Hurl's been a great way to stay fit and feel part of the team that trains there. Get off your bum and get fit!!

Because of this it took me quite a while to actually go in. a few laps past the windows to look in to see the equipment they have available and the membership prices. One night I couldn't sleep - one of the hot sticky nights that sleep just doesn't want to come - so I thought to myself that now is the best possible time to go and try it out. The gym layout is styled on those west coast US gyms you see in the movies. With more equipment than you can imagine - weight training, cardio fitness, boxing and more - I just wanted to run on the treadmill for a few hours. Afterwards the fully stocked Pro Shop for all your training supplement requirements, and what's better is the coffee shop found even closer than you'd expect. Now I guess I'll never sleep. The membership is not the cheapest if you're a "every now and then" kinda gym user but if it's a 4-6 day a week thing this is definitely for you.

The trainers are very welcoming and will make sure you will feel at home, plus the initial assessment I got was very beneficial and insightful. I like to think of myself as pretty fit but this class really kicked me on my butt. F45 Functional Fitness was born in Australia by a couple of footy players with a pretty good idea. At it's base, it is simple circuit training - you work really hard for a few minutes and then rest for a minute to catch your breath - for a round total of 45 minutes. I did a 'Romans' class, which focuses more on strength (think tricep dips, weighted squats and suspended pushups), while the 'Athletica' class is more cardio-based. On Saturdays they do 'Hollywood' which is a mixture of both PLUS a DJ! Party workout! What makes F45 different to other workouts is the team-focus and technology used. There are multiple plasma screens on the gym walls, showing a countdown timer and a video of someone doing the exercise you are to follow. There are groups of 4-5, with each group doing a different exercise and eventually you rotate. I was given a partner and placed in to a group and we genuinely all bonded by the end! The instructors seemed young and a little nervous (this particular F45 only just opened, so I suspect they are still finding their feet) however I felt fully supported and motivated throughout the class. They help you with your technique and throw out a helluva lot of high fives when you're on your one minute break. If you're looking to make a real difference to your bod AND your fitness, you really need to give F45 a go. Grab a pal and get along.

When I moved to the local area I was overwhelmed by the choice of gyms and fitness centres. I called around to compare offers and prices and decided on Yarra city council for the following reasons: - A variety of group classes are offered throughout the day, 7 days per week. - Low cost. The cost of a 20 session pass for a student works out just over $5 per session - Session passes can be used at all Yarra city leisure centres (Burnley, Collingwood, Fitzroy and Richmond). - Low commitment. There is no obligation to become a member. - Friendly community minded instructors. - Plenty of parking. While the interior of the leisure centre is not as modern colourful as newer fitness centres, the well maintained gardens add to the attraction of the centre.

Richmond - the best and largest gym of the three. Good indoor 50m pool, with hot tubs, sauna and steam rooms. Most group exercise is in a great upstairs studio space. But beware classes held in the creche area, it's small and cramped, with no mirrors. I'm a big fan, love the flexibility of going to each centre and the Les Mills instructors are great.

North Melbourne Boxing and Fitness is all about increasing your strength and getting you ripped! On top of their top-notch personal training, they have absolutely tremendous boxing classes suited to any size/shape/personality. It is quite apparent this gym is more tailored to those wanting to build muscle and in my time there today, the gym was dominated by men pumping their guns. Slightly intimidating, yes, but not at all off putting. There is plenty of equipment, especially weight machines. This takes up the majority of the gym. Personally I'm a fan of exercising using free weights and found this was quite limited. There is a good amount of cardio equipment available and a small cool down area in the back corner. The cost of membership seems decent and it's a 24/7 gym for members. Staffed hours are from 10am if you're casual. Overall a decent experience but this place needs air-conditioning and more staff on the ground. It was almost like it was expected you're just supposed to know what to do and if you're like me in a new gym it's daunting. I would recommend asking for a full tour if you plan on working out here and if you don't ask, you will be left to your own devices. Also, casual rates are way cheaper than the other gyms in the area so great if you plan to drop in on an ad hoc basis.

Also, all the technology is modern so the touch screens on the cardio machines are really easy to navigate too. The gym itself has been recently renovated and all the equipment is new, smooth to use and shiny. The space smells and feels fresh every time and all the rooms and equipment are really clean and all areas well ventilated. There are pin-loaded machines, free weights, and a range of some of the latest cardio machines. This gym has something for everyone and is really well priced, especially for a 24/7 gym that can be used nationally. The reason I have put 4 stars, not 5 is because I really like group exercises classes and they don't have many here. Overall, the gym is great, not too big, not too small and has everything you need. Kind and motivated staff and on the whole, a good vibe. Happy to be a member here.

The classes are exceptional, and so are the instructors - especially Brandon on a Friday afternoon when you join him at 5:30pm for Body Attack, and with him again at 6:30pm for Body Balance - two fantastic Les Mills workouts, and he is a great start to the weekend. The reception staff defy the service you would normally receive from chain stores - they actually know your name and thus greet you by your name the moment they see you before handing in your membership card to be swiped. And when you misplace your card; it is usually immediately ready to re-collect. The launch classes of new releases on the Les Mills workouts are always so much fun. There is a different theme for each new release where you might have to dress up in halloween clothes for instance, and sometimes instructors run special classes for fundraising purposes where you cannot get in without a gold coin donation.
