This place gets pretty busy, so sat and waited for a bit and watched the guys cut hair while we waited for my son's turn. The guys definitely take their time and are very detailed. The parking can be a hassle on a busy day, the barber shop is in a small shopping center. The shop is clean and organized. You should definitely make an appointment, I did a walk in and came back about an hour later. My son was looking to cut a little design into his hair, I was really impressed with the clean lines done by Laurence. I came to visit my elderly parents this past weekend and needed a haircut before I went back to Northern California. Since my return from the Philippines in early February this year, I've been going to these guys ever since. I thought I needed a new haircut for 2020 and this was the place closest to my house. Since I saw good ratings for this, I've decided, "Why not give it a shot?" First thing I've noticed was a very clean and welcoming environment. First barber was a female. Not bad. 2nd was Tino. He did a better job than the first. 3rd was René. He is very detailed like Tino and what I like about René is that he is passionate about his job. And that, to me, is what matters the most. I called 10 minutes prior and was able to stop by and get my hair cut in blazing speeds. A few years later and this place still gives the best cut for the kiddo. Especially now that he actually gives a shit about how his hair looks. (Ahhh teenagers) Justin does an amazing job. Amazing! Tino also does a great job. You won't be disappointed with either of them. While the kiddo hasn't had his hair cut by anyone else, I have seen their work, and it all looks great. Their prices have gone up since their opening several years ago, but is still a deal. $16 for the Five Star cut and $14 for the regular cut. Not sure what the difference is, but I'd still pay more. Make an appointment if you have a preference to a specific barber because the popular ones are usually booked solid and you can find yourself waiting a bit if you don't. Tino (owner).. I moved here not too long ago man. Got to meet you before the shop went appointment only due to pandemic. I've been to your spot 4 times now. 3 times I had appointments. 3 out of the 3 appointments something went wrong. The first time you were 15 min late, second time you didn't even remember booking with me so your son cut my hair, and the last time you completely flaked on me, never texted me back or returned my calls and I even left you a voicemail. I gave you a chance to just send me a text and let me know if something came up, or at least give me some excuse. But you never did. You lost a customer in me, and my brother just moved in down the road and I'll make sure he doesn't ever get his haircut here, nor will I recommend Five Star Barber in National City to anyone I know. Here it is just about 2300 hours. Lets say it's been about six & half to seven hours since we finished- my hair is still as when I stepped out of the shop. Awesome. Used to go here before. So I know how it is. But after 3 years, came back to this shop. I signed up and waited for more than an hour, and the new guys had the nerve to ask me if I was next (which I was) and pass me to grab someone they knew. He could have simply said, "I know your next, but I just got to knock this guy out because of whatever reason". Cool, at least he gave me a heads up. I watch one of the other barbers picked up his phone a million times to message someone. A bit unprofessional. And his client was just getting a skin fade with looks like a #4 all around. Which took him more than an hour to do! Imagine a server, chef, car detailer, mechanic, or whatever service you trying to get, always on their phone and you are just waiting for them to finish their text message so you can get on with your life. Granted they have clean cuts. But unprofessional and truly hooks up people they know. It's funny seeing some of my friends ugly heads magically transform to god hair status after going to Frank. Five Star accept walk ins, which doesn't have that long of a wait. I've only waited up to 15 minutes max without an appointment. Overall 5/5 Friendly environment and really good cuts. Honestly, we all have once or twice have experienced that pit in your stomach when you need a haircut but can't get to your primary barber. I'm originally from San Diego but live in LA now so you can imagine how I felt when I was visiting the family over a long weekend and got a notification from my agent that I had an audition the next morning at 10 am. I frantically began asking all my friends where I should go to get a haircut and was recommended here. When I walked in the shop I spoke to a guy named Justin who said he'd be able to fit me in between a couple appointments. The wait wasn't long, which is a big deal for me since I was visiting family, and he was extremely meticulous about not only understanding the specific haircut I wanted but also meeting my expectations. He even took care as to asking whether or not I have sensitive skin and for approval to use the electric razor on me before just diving in. (Unfortunately, my skin is sensitive and I've had a barber do that before) The cut was perfect. The fade was immaculate and the line up was crisp. It was one of those times where you don't even have to look in the mirror because you can feel that it's good but once you do your confidence skyrockets. Been going here for a while now and the cuts are generally good. But my last experiences were pretty bad. Made an appointment and showed up 30 min early and when I called they said they were backed up. I waited for another 30 min after my appointment and they still were not able to take me. So I decided to reschedule for the next day. This day I showed up 5 min late and called them a couple of min after and they told me that I was late so they gave my spot away. He always makes sure you are satisfied with your haircut and offers suggestions if you aren't sure what to do with your hair. I wouldn't trust anybody else with my haircuts. This is sort of my backup barbershop if my current stylist or barber is not available at the moment. The few times Ive been here, I left pretty happy about my haircut. Tapers, lineups, combovers they do it all. They havent messed up my hair like other shops I've been to, while sampling spots. I usually get my hair cut from one of the barbers there named Tino, but when I recently went he wasnt there until later on. So to avoid waiting I took a chance on the stylist there named Hope, it was her first day. She styled my hair exactly how I wanted it. Very professional and friendly. Definitely a great addition to the shop. Haircuts are well worth the price, for the professionalism and clean cuts. Came here Friday morning, a little after they opened (around 10:05) and was greeted in by Shunee and another male employee (I didn't speak to him so I didn't know his name). Shunee asked if I had an appointment, and I said no, but she took care of me anyways! Great customer service off the bat. After asking me what kind of hair cut I wanted, Shunee took her time, and kept looking back and forth at what she was doing. Another plus in my books. From previous experiences, other barbers look once, or twice and that's it. She looked at least 10 times, so she was very meticulous about her work. The haircut took about 45 minutes, but it didn't feel that way. With Shunee making small talk with you, along with hearing the music in the background, and also hearing the conversations between the barbers, time flew by.
