If you find yourself in Oslo and want a dining experience that evokes something uniquely Norwegian, at least without having to spend an arm, a leg and any other appendage, well, you're in luck. This is an ideal outdoor spot on a balmy evening since it's in the pedestrian plaza right next to the central train station. After spending the day looking at naked statues, appreciating Nobel peace prizes, and walking on the opera house rooftop, Jamie W. and I were tuckered out and didn't want to venture too far from our hotel. We just walked across the street and found a table quite easily here even though it was obviously quite popular with young Oslolites (...is that what they're called?). We were pretty famished since it was a long time since the complimentary breakfast buffet at the hotel. First up were the 79 NOK ($7.90 US) plate of Truffle Fries topped with grated parmesan with a side of truffle mayonnaise (photo: https://bit.ly/3CX84vq). Less Norwegian, more TGIFriday's but satisfying nonetheless. More Norwegian was the 149 NOK ($15 US) Norwegian Red Beetroot. It was served with horseradish cream, pickled onions, and Jerusalem artichoke crisps (photo: https://bit.ly/3R9zSBb). It was just four bites but tasty and earthy in a different way. We moved on to the entrees from there and split two between us. First was the 219 NOK ($22 US) Chicken Salad where they marinated chicken breast in mustard and grilled it. It topped a bed of mixed greens, buckwheat, tomatoes, and radish, all of it drizzled with tarragon mayonnaise (photo: https://bit.ly/3RyNVQr). The mustard and buckwheat added a Norwegian dimension to an American standard. Then came the heartier 259 NOK ($26 US) Steak Sandwich which appeared to center around a tender grilled flank steak with the same accompaniments as the beetroot - horseradish cream, pickled onions, and Jerusalem artichoke crisps (photo: https://bit.ly/3qagzMf), We saved room for dessert, the 149 NOK ($15 US) White Chocolate Sphere which became a table performance with a tiny pitcher of hot raspberry coulis poured over the white chocolate and raspberry cream (photo: https://bit.ly/3qfPTcM). A bit showy but a nice finish. It made us feel like upscale Norwegians dining al fresco. Food was amazing but menu was not updated on yelp. We went there because there were mussels on menu but when we got there they said it was out of date and they no longer had some of the items on menu. We had reindeer stew and truffle fries and they were delicious. There was nobody in restaurant except for us which was odd. read more

Average meal tonight at a restaurant with plenty of open tables (it should have been a clue). Burger/fries for one of us and a chicken salad for the other, with wine/beer. No water offered. No seasonings on the table, and the salad was bland. I wasn't given a receipt for the purchase and when I realized it, I was told by the cashier that most people don't want them and they throw it away (with a shrug). I asked if she could get it from the trash (it had only been 5 minutes or so) or hand write a receipt, she said no. I asked for a manager and she said there wasn't one. Really? Receipt was needed for trip insurance reimbursement. Tip jar on the counter. FYI other Americans, tipping is not required in Norway. We won't be back. read more

The "Fjøla" is located within the main station and not accessible from outside. One part of it is like a terrace, no wind and weather, but lots of light. And burning candles on every table! Inside it's a stylish restaurant. The menu is rather small with only six dishes: fish, mussels and one kind of burger. This was the best burger I've ever had with grilled bun, tasty meat and onion as well as crispy fries as side dish, servied on a plate made from wood and stone (€ 18,-/NOK 179,-). An okay place, quite pricey, but we knew before coming here that it would be. Had their fish soup, pork entree and their sweet potato fries. Sweet potato fries were delicious, had some aioli on it and was delightful and a huge portion. The fish soup is usually made with both red fish and white fish, but that day they were out of red fish so there was only white fish. Really fresh white fish and shrimp in the soup, but the soup was extremely salty. I was chugging water like crazy. Maybe the potatoes that came with it were supposed to mitigate that, but still... crazy salty. The pork entree was extremely tender and quite tasty, but very expensive. There were some nice onions, kale and shallots on the side which made it a nice pretty colorful dish, but the sauce was just ok, the whole dish was much better without it. The restaurant has a pretty nice ambiance and is in a very convenient location at the city center and right next to the train station. But there were much better places around the city at more reasonable prices! read more

If you want to try a modern Norwegian restaurant, this is the place in Oslo city centre. Fish, mussles, reindeer and so on. I had a fantastic fish soup as a main dish - best I have ever had in Oslo. This was a disappointment from start to end. First we wait one hour for our food. I had a burger, both the bread and beef tasted dry. I ordered medium, but it was served well done. The aioli and fries were tasteless and the bacon on the burger was so stale it was hard to cut it. Two stars since we had a good waiter, a fun and positive girl. It is very good, and service friendly and knowledgeable. Not sure what problems were in past with "small" menu, but whatever it was, it seems to have been addressed now as the menu (for dinner) seems to be fully fleshed out. Food served under value and poor service Ate at Fjola (Jernbanetorget 1 Oestbanehallen, Oslo, Norway) on July 10, 2017 - I ordered the fish soup, under the Seafood meal, which to include red and white fishes, mussels, shrimps, etc according to the menu description. Service was very slow and when it came, there were only about 150 g of vegetables in the plate, with about 100 ml of liquid in a separate cup. When pocked, I found 2 pieces of fish in a nail size and 3 small mussels. Not a single shrimp. It was such a cheat and totally unexpected, or the menu description is intentionally misleading. There was barely anything to eat, for about 20 Euros dinner dish (174 in local currency). [Note: bread is not even included. This is the only place do not serve bread with soup]. I talked with the staff, pointed out the food was undervalue and not served according to the menu description, also requested a discount. A person name Kio came to the table; she told me that "shrimp was used to make the soup and I won't see it" and refused for any discount. This place's business conduct is dishonest and unreasonable.
