Came in for dinner because of the Yelp Reviews. The ambience and service is top notch. Everyone is so helpful and friendly. We split a Salsiccia Skorpe (pizza) it had a nice crust and came with a white cream sauce with broccoli, arugula, pine nuts, and yummy sausage. We also shared the Parpadelle Bolognese which was very different from what I'm used to. It was more like stew meat. I wasn't a fan but my boyfriend enjoyed it. I thoroughly enjoyed the pizza. I loved it: the interior design is just great! Nice service speaking English very well as most Norwegians do. You can sit outside but you´d miss the stylish atmosphere then. And the burning candles on every table, even unused tables, and the quiet music. I had a "Pizza Vitello" with veal, parmesan cheese and rucola: rather large portion and very tasty (NOK 179,- / NOK 200 = EUR 22,-)). We came here based on Yelp reviews! We had beef & chips and the Chèvre Salad w/ extra chicken. The beef and chips were hot and fresh. Chips were served w/ Béarnaise sauce & we super tasty! The meat was cooked to perfection! The salad was amazing with lots of wonderful flavors! Loved the roasted beets, pomegranates and walnuts! I didn't know Oslo was such a foodie city! I was very impressed with the selections on Yelp, and Taverna'n is no exception. First off, 10% off a flatbread pizza with check-in! We got the veal carpaccio flatbread, which I've never seen on any other menus before. Unfortunately, the carpaccio was sliced too thin, so the dominate taste was the breadiness of the pizza. But when I took the meat off and ate it separately, the veal has a nice salty flavor. We also got the creamy fish soup. This was definitely the highlight. It was so delicious and hearty. Perfect for a chilly Norwegian night. They were generous with the fish portion and even added shrimp - a pleasant surprise. There was a green oil on top that added a nice herbiness. For drinks, I got the Moscow Mule. This didn't taste like the ones back in America. Really light in alcohol and no ginger beer. This was the only con. 4 stars for food/drinks, 5 stars for ambiance. The restaurant was huge with multiple dining rooms. It had a very hipster feel with wooden tables and tall candles. There were large groups of young people gathering, even on a Wednesday. As others have observed, this is an inviting space in a cool part of town. It's quite large but broken up into smaller coves and islands that make it seem more intimate. Dark wood and warm ambient lighting combined with tabletop candles add to the casual but urbane atmosphere. The smoke from the wood-fired oven enticingly envelops but does not overwhelm. Like a previous reviewer, I had the Moules-Frites. I too found it extremely well prepared. My bowl was overflowing with a very generous number of mussels. There must have been at least 40 or more swimming in a rich, savory garlic infused broth. I found the fries however to be just decent, not quite up to the same standard. It should be noted that the accompanying ramekin of aioli was a definite plus. I enthusiastically and repeatedly dipped accordingly. Two friends each had a Pizza Margherita. Truthfully, they were good but not exceptional. For dessert I splurged on a chocolate Creme Brulee that was well worth the caloric overload. Together with a double espresso it was a perfect ending to a great meal. Prices very reasonable, especially by Norwegian standards. Wait staff very cordial. read more

Ambience: Casual, clean, comfortable and can take large parties. Regained wood furnishing. Candle-lit tables. Some booth seating available. Food: Had the mussels and frittes. Probably the best I have had in a long time, and I normally don't do mussels. I started with the fries and got lost in it. The crunch was perfect. It was salted but not too salty like most places that add salt to fries. The aioli sauce complimented the fries, and was so good, I almost ate it on its own. By the time I remembered to try the mussels, the top pieces were a little cold. Good thing there were enough broth to warm it back up. Soup base was delicious. Portion was HUGE, share it! Drinks: Large selection of beer, liquor and mixed drinks. Wine list was short but what I ordered came out solid, so more than happy! Service: I was seated right away. Came in at about 9p. Wait staff gave me an English menu (thank you!) It took a little while before my order was taken, but I was in no hurry. Wine (within 2 mins) and food (within 10 mins) came out pretty quickly. When time came to pay the bill, wait staff expected card but I was paying in cash. They don't carry much change, so have it handy. Price: Reasonable for Oslo, as it is in the center of town in a cool neighborhood. Wine was 92 NOK a glass, and mussels were 195 NOK. I'll be back again! This restaurant is really in the heart of Oslo, in youngstorget which has gathered up many cafés, bars and restaurants. I have been to tavernan twice and I was quite happy both times with my food choice. The first time I had a pasta dish and the second time I had a fish soup. Both were tasty. I mean it was not anything amazing/special that I would crave for. But the food is above average and the prices are quite low for the Oslo scene. This balance makes tavernan to be very popular and has lots of people all the time. I love the interior of tavernan as well. They have really put some effort to decorate and make it look a bit special. It's quite cosy to sit there and I will definitely be visiting again! read more

Gosh. This was a delicious meal. I scarfed it down in a NY/ Oslo minute. The Arctic char was a lighter version of its salmon cousin served in a bed of roasted vegetables with buttersauce and the mash potatoes were creamiest mash I've ever had. The dill oil gave it a punch and the saltiness of the roe when it pops in your mouth is just the right contrast to the creamy delicious mash. Gastronomic delight! Completing this delicious Norwegian meal with white chocolate mousse with lemoncurd, perfect compliment. They seem to be popular with their skorpe judging on what the locals around me are ordering. Maybe next time. But then I already told my waiter Herman, who was excellent btw, that I'm coming back tomorrow for the creamy fish soup. Finally found a great restaurant in Oslo! I have been to several "decent" places in the past two days, but nothing that stood out. The food here is VERY good. Had an excellent tenderloin steak and fries, and exceptional creme brûlée with fruit for dessert. Love the atmosphere - very hip inside, with Edison bulbs, natural wood and mixed surfaces, plus lots of (real) candles. A dead giveaway you've found a gem is when the locals are lined up waiting for a table. And it was worth the wait. We arrived just before a big crowd did around 6 on a Thursday and it only took about 10 minutes to get seated. Our waitress was fullly engaged, a lot of fun. Disappeared for awhile as she got busy but I really didn't need that second beer anyway. I had the Skorpe Diavola, extra spicy. Perfect crust, just the right thickness and cooked to perfection. Love the toppings. They left a real buzz in the mouth. The Moules and frites were 'okay' An okay portion size but truth be told, while they were not cold, they were not hot. The sauce was a bit thin. Coulda used some more depth of flavour and the frites were better with some fresh ground pepper and salt. A very enjoyable meal and would definitely go back to try something else. read more

Came here later in the evening and there was no problem getting a table. However, the hostesses/waitresses were slow at noticing that we were at the door. I am not sure if this is the norm in Norway but in North America, I am used to being noticed immediately when I am at the door. The service here in general was not that great. Ordered: Fish & Chips and Mussels & Fries. The Mussels & Fries were really good but the fish & chips was not good at all. I would recommend eating fish and chips at Fiskeriet in Youngstorget instead. Went here after seeing the positive Yelp reviews during my night stay in Oslo. As others have praised, the atmosphere here is a positive. My boyfriend and I got in on a Friday night without a reservation, but the place was rather busy. I ordered the fish soup, which was good but really buttery, with a Moscow mule. My boyfriend ordered the taverna'n pizza (and we were able to use the 10% off Yelp check in coupon)- he thought the pizza was good. Prices were comparable with Oslo, but I still considered the meal to be expensive. We finished with a chocolate creme brûlée, which I wasn't in love with, but was still good. Service was also a bit slow, but our waitress was really friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend to others. read more

Went here with colleagues for dinner. We had pre-ordered our food, which sped things up being served. Good! Had some good Chablis and fun conversation on top of a good pancetta pizza. The kitchen is open, so you see what the chefs are doing. Our waitress was also very nice, and even honored my Yelp discount although it was technically not valid (apparently). She was on he ball with keeping our glasses full, too. Plus for that. Food was good, I was full, so all in all a good night. Been here three times already; once for dinner and twice for lunch. Big rustic premises where it's nice to sit both for family dinner with children and a lonesome lunch. I really like their chicken salad featured on the lunch menu. For dinner we tried the fish and meat BBQ plates, which were nicely presented and tasteful. Service was good at lunch, but slow during dinner, and I would like for the coffee to taste a little bit better, to make this an even better lunch place. Came here after getting in to Oslo after a full days travel. Restaurant was large and spacious and beautifully lit by candles inside. Pizzas were good, and one was just the right amount to fill you up without being too much. My friends got Irish coffees and said they were delicious. Our food hasn't even come yet and I'm already giving this five stars. Yelp says this place is open until 1am. So we came in at 9:55pm ... and it turns out this place closes at 10pm. But the server offered to double-check with the kitchen and it turned out we could order some (but not all) of the items. Yay. And cocktails. Double yay.
