We camped at Flandreau in the off season (fall). The electric campsite wasn't particularly wooded, but the spots were pretty spacious. It's nice being so close to a town without seeing/hearing much. Be forewarned - you will need to go up and down a significant hill, which can be challenging with some vehicle/camper setups. Overall, it was a peaceful experience and we will need to further explore in the future. I wish the man made pool was open more than the limited time in the summer. The road within the dump station is very rough - it could use resurfacing. read more

We are on a mission to visit all the state parks in MN. We hit this one after Minneopa. Unfortunately we walked too much in the prev park and were a bit tired when we hit this one so we didn't get to truly experience all it has to offer but we enjoyed our short stay there. We opted for a short walk to a look out point on Indian Ridge trail. The loop we wanted to take was fenced off with an electric fence (not sure why) but we were able to see some valley views from one area of the path. We grabbed a picnic table before hiking and ate some lunch. There were many tables being used. We were near the sand pool. No water in the pool yet but it looked like a unique experience to swim in a small 'lake'. read more

Organized, clean, and well kept. Lots of trails for hiking and they are all well marked. Only downside is that there is only pit toilets for the tent sites, but as long as you are prepared, it's a great place to stay! Sites are large and well marked. Very safe place. read more

Well maintained state park. We stayed at rustic campsite 64 and while it's not secluded like the walk in sites you do get a good amount of space for your site. Bathrooms are on each end of the rustic campsites so you'll be close no matter which site you choose. The only knock on the rustic campsites is that you have to go to another part of the park to get water because there is no water at the rustic sites. There is trail access right beside the campsite and plenty of different length loops to choose from and well marked. One of the main perks of this park is the sandy bottom beach swimming area. Very nice clean and lifeguards are on site. Different depths that are clearly marked and a nice walking ramp leading into the water. Also this state park is very close to town so does give you options if you're looking to venture away from the park. We went to Schell brewery one of our days it's very close only a few miles from the campsite. Park rangers were very nice and helpful one told us about a festival in town during our stay and we ended up going and enjoying it. No complaints with this state park very well maintained and was an enjoyable weekend trip. read more

There is a huge picnic area which might be popular with the locals, although on a sunny afternoon there was probably two small groups of people around. A beautiful stone all purpose building and a sand swimming area, now dry, makes for a great local park. The park is a little short on trail marker signs and the commons area is spacious with with plenty of parking all baking in the hot sun with crew cut grass. What's wrong with growing more trees? The state is always talking about sustainable growth and environmental concerns. Trees would add more beauty and is just healthier all the way around. I hiked to what was listed as a historical site but couldn't see anything historical. There is an old dam across the now dried up stream, perhaps that's what they mean. The trails are scenic and well maintained and mostly easy with just a few hills to navigate without steps. The park has easy access right at the New Ulm city limits. I should probably come back when we are completely through with Covid 19 and the pool and recreation building would be open again. read more

Unbelieveable... $31+ $7 for reservation fee + $7 for entrance fee. If I did not did not take a stand, I would have been charged $7 for my toad. A total of $45. I tried to use the dump station for wastewater. It was flooded, one of the potable water spigot was in operative .The small dumpster was overflowing. The site was riddled with trash, unlevel, loose sand, and small (approximately 30'). Once again I paid $38 for a site in a state park which is the most I've EVER paid. I should have gone on thru to Wisconsin. No more state parks in Minnesota for me. This left a very bad taste. read more

We came here on a sunday afternoon and aside from a few trail runners we had the walking trail to ourselves. it was easy to get in, be sure to stop to pay the $5 admission fee. I would like to come back and check out the pool area in the summer. but overall this is a nice place to go for an easy hike. read more

Flanrdrau is one of my favorite state parks. It's an easy drive from the cities. The park itself is beautiful, with WPA era buildings, lots of shaded campsites and nice hiking trails. Unique to this park is a large sandy bottomed "swimming hole." This is a man-made swimming pool that looks just like a little lake. The kids love it and its great for a dip on a hot day. Another feature of Flandrau is that it sits right in the town of New Ulm. This means you have ready access to all the Schell's beer, air fried food, glockenspiel chiming goodness of my new favorite MN town, all within shouting distance of the park. All of this goodness means you'll want to reserve a spot early if you have specific dates of travel. Otherwise, they do hold some campsites back for walk-ins...but get there early! OK. read more

The chlorinated sand bottom pool gets 5 stars, but the campsites get 1 star due to rats. I settled on 2 stars. We stayed at a different state park, but stopped by Flandrau on a Sunday afternoon to check out the campsites and take a dip in the pool. The pool is amazing and so lovely on a hot day. It's free, you just need to make sure you have a state park parking pass. There's lifeguards on duty and when they blow the whistle, get out of the pool and take your safety break! The campsites are so bogus! Maybe the electric sites for RVs are better, but the tent sites are super small and right on top of each other - no trees or anything in between. It reminded me of music festival camping when they try to pack as many tents in as possible. There's 3 walk-in sites. We walked back to check them out and the path was covered with little (baby?!) rats. Just NO. Animals are going to be nearby when you're in the woods, but they shouldn't be so used to people that they walk over my flip flop. That almost happened.... related I nearly shit my pants. This brings me to my next complaint: the bathrooms. Holy mother of all - what is wrong with people?! The women's outhouse had no toilet papper, so I attempted to go to the men's. BIG MISTAKE. Remember the festival tent sites? Well, I'm thinking the whole campground must have felt that vibe too and partied like rockstars for the weekend. Drunk off your ass is surely the only way the entire men's outhouse could be covered in human feces, right?! It smelled horrible (no surprise). It was so so so bad. Luckily we always bring emergency toilet paper so I was able to use the potty NOT covered in shit before I made my escape. I really don't think I'll even go back for the pool. It was a bad experience. read more

A great state park! Wonderful trails for walking. It is right in New Ulm so if you forget something there is a store nearby. I agree with other reviews that the walk in sites are the most private. The walk is not far to any of them. Great park to get away and enjoy nature. read more

Spent Memorial weekend 2016 in Flandau State Park, at the rustic walk in site #92. My friend took site #93. These sites are about 250 yards from where you park, which can be long enough if you are car camping and humping a cooler and fire wood, but really not too bad. The walkin sites were great. You couldn't see any of the other sites, and we were surrounded by trees with a carpet of wild flowers on the ground. We hit up the water hole after running to Schell's brewery and back (5 mile trail run), where we also availed ourselves of the showers. I'd stay clear of the non-walk in sites if you value your privacy. read more

Great trails! The trails are always groomed nice! My dog and I love going for hikes though the woods and walking down by the river! Camping here is always fun too! The pool area is great for people of every age! read more

The pool is beautiful and was perfect for an afternoon with the kids (age 5 and 7). Lots of tables to sit. Ample parking, even with a few family reunions being held. We did not use the camp sites. read more
