We bought tickets for a concert at FAU and we arrived at the campus early to stroll around the area and to get to know this part of Boca, which we had not been before. FAU's main campus in Boca Raton was established on the remnants of a World War II American Army airbase in 1964. Spanning 850 acres, the site is located between Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale. The campus was designated a burrowing owl sanctuary in 1971 by the Audubon Society. The owls find the campus appealing because there are few predators, due to the university's proximity to the Boca Raton Airport, and because the campus was originally cleared of vegetation when operating as an airbase during World War II. Unfortunately we did not see nor hear any owls while we walked around the area after dark. The Boca Raton campus is home to a wide variety of university programs and facilities. These facilities are labs and classrooms, housing for students, a 6,000-gallon shark tank for aquatic research, a movie theater, athletic and recreational facilities, and the student-run record label Hoot/Wisdom Recordings. The campus feels very spread out and very green, a nice place to jog, walk or run on a nice day, if you feel like exercising among the young college kids. read more

I had a very disappointing experience with Alexandra Perez at the front desk of the Study Abroad office. She was incredibly rude, dismissive, and unprofessional during our interaction. I came in with genuine questions and concerns, and instead of receiving support or guidance, I was met with attitude and disrespect. I've never encountered someone so unhelpful and discourteous at FAU. If this is the first point of contact for students interested in studying abroad, it seriously needs improvement. read more

Florida Atlantic University has been my academic place of studying over the years. I finished my bachelors at FAU. Then did my GRE prep course from here. Then got into the masters program as well. Recently took a executive education course for the CIA exam. The exam seemed like a daunting task and this course of 10 weeks helped prepare for it. Robert who was the program coordinator was excellent in communicating before what was expected. Both the professors (Clay and Mike) for the course were great as well in providing a ton of material and great practice questions. We did questions every class to get in a habit for the test. The test is a three part exam so all the help you can get is good. I totally would take other mind enriching courses to further my career and intellect.~ read more

As a teacher and mentor for college students, I suggest each student apply to any school except FAU. As a fourth year student I can genuinely say that FAU hates their students and only cares about financials. Students are expected to pay a transportation fee each semester yet the campus transportation is rarely running and most advertised additional transportation is nonexistent (the tram to and from the beach). Coming to this University always brings me beautiful memories, when I used to come with my kids on February for the Regional Science Olympiad competitions and this time I went by myself, to the wonderful event; TEDx Boca Raton. Everything was spotless, restrooms, hallways, and auditorium. Talk about a University going through a real transition. This institute has grown and improved so much over the past 20 years. Growth alone over the past two decades has seen the number of buildings easily doubled; And the campus is no longer the eyesore it once was. More recently, the completion of the new (on-campus) Owl Football Stadium really makes it complete (since the team previously had to play down in Fort Lauderdale at an old, dated stadium). They also have new dorms and specialty buildings like innovation village and the new engineering building; plus many more planned buildings to be constructed over the coming years. In additional to the campus changes, FAU was the location of one of the presidential debates back in 2008. They have made many strides bringing a medical program to the main campus (I believe it is currently being done jointly with another University). They have also made an alliance with Scripps Research Institute. All these factors have done so much to attract many potential students and the admissions requirements have become considerably more difficult over the past few years. Absolutely horrible experience gaining my bachelors degree. I moved to Florida in august of 2019. I started classes spring semester of 2020. I completely understood that I would pay out of state tuition for 1 semester. But it turned into almost 3 semesters of paying out of state tuition. Mind you I had my drivers license changed, car registration, car insurance, my own apartment lease, a letter from my employer, bills, etc tied to the state of Florida. A very established Florida residency. Jonathan Puga is an absolute jerk. I wish our phone call would of been recorded. When I called him to ask for an update he stated "don't know how you're paying for tuition, you must come from a wealthy family or something". Disgusting. I ended up going to the appeal committee in the summer of 2021. And finally was approved for in state tuition for my last 2 semesters at FAU. I truly believe that if I would of kept going through Jonathan, he would of kept denying me over and over again until I graduated. The stress that this man caused me and this situation was awful. As far as the other departments, lazy and unhelpful. They will transfer you over and over again until you get a different response to the same question you asked yesterday. No one is on the same page and no one knows what's going on. You have to figure it out yourself and be your own advocate for sure at FAU. read more

My new Alma Mater. I am so proud to have graduated from here with Magna Cum Laude Latin Honors. Transferring from Broward College was easy and they have an entire department for transfer students. Most of my professors were top notch! Take Professor Shockley for politics, take Dr. Hanne for history and if you are at the College of Education take Dr. Klein, she is the best professor! The campus is beautiful. Royal palms everywhere and it's a few miles from the beach. Great food and even a Starbucks and Chick Fill A off the breeze way on campus. The football games were fun and I enjoyed taking my sons. Go to the evening games though or you will bake in the heat. Always rent your books from Amazon after you get your student prime account. Never pay full price for books and always wait until after syllabus day. You might not need the book at all. FAU uses Canvas, which I love because it's a user friendly online portal. Online classes were easy and I never had a problem navigating the courses. The College of Education has amazing programs. My program had 30 hours of field work, a 90 hour practicum and a full time teaching internship. You must pass all FTCE exams before your internship so don't wait! They are expensive and seats fill up fast. We trained with the Marzano Evaluation Model and the hands on experience is what schools are looking for. I am now a 7th grade History teacher at my dream school! Decorating my classroom has been surreal and I am so thankful for my time at FAU. Go Owls! read more

Awesome! This university has really surprised me. Our son started going here in the fall and we couldn't be happier. Getting him set up in the dorm was a breeze. On move in day the dorm had many staffers available to help with moving, checking out hand trucks, providing water and just saying welcome. My son's room was very clean. We discovered the cable connector was bent on the wall and they sent a handyman up right way to fix it. We took a tour of the cafeteria, student union, and Football Stadium which was pretty damn cool. We also bought season tickets for the football games and so far we have had a blast tailgating and watching the games. It's been almost two months since my son started going to school here and he loves it. He's made a lot of new friends, he loves his classes and I have not heard one complaint from him. Now I just hope he stays for 4 years and doesn't leave for another school. We are keeping our fingers crossed. Owls up! read more

FAU has been a part of my life since 2009, when I went for my MBA in Marketing. The MBA program was solid at that time & great "bang for my buck." Since then, I have seen a number of resources & capital poured into FAU. The campus is beautiful, the Professors are caring, & the resources are vast. In 2018, I started taking a GRE prep program at FAU, as it is my goal to achieve enterence into a PhD Program, hopefully at FAU. This program has been wonderful! I have met many wonderful folks & the Math Professors are awesome. A Kaplan or Princeton Review class would likely cost well over $1300! This class is less than $700! It is a great school for a lot of people. I personally love all the programs they offer and the campus is beautiful. The downside is for out-of-state transfer students. FAU staff for financial aid and the registrar office are ill-mannered and lazy. I have had a very poor experience with them trying to obtain residency and gain independence. The process is long and hard. If you get lost or confused, they don't want to help. I highly advise FAU to develop a more willing staff. If you are someone like me, you are trying to do this all by yourself and need help navigating, something they're not willing to do. Let me start off by saying I attended and received a Bachelor's degree from FAU and that I am returning as a non-degree seeking student to obtain college credits for CPA licensure. I've been through the process of applying and registering for classes more than once. With that being said, I can say with certainty that FAU has some of the absolute worst service I have ever encountered. I don't think I have ever worked with anyone in any department that I felt actually had any desire to do their job or help students. From admissions to registration to advising, every department is unacceptable. But there is no choice for student but to accept it. Every time I have to contact the school I end up more frustrated than before and no closer to solving any issue. You call one department, they usually don't answer the phone, but if you're lucky enough to get a call back they tell you that's isn't their responsibility and to call another department. And so it continues. I tried to call and speak with a department supervisor to explain my concerns and was not given any name or contact info of a person to talk to. I hope someone from FAU reads this so they can be made aware. I am not the only student who feels this way. I don't know if the University is understaffed or of they hire people who just don't care, but something really has to be done. FAU is getting millions of dollars from the state and students and should be providing better service. We aren't customers we are students trying to accomplish our goals and better our futures and it's FAU's JOB to help us accomplish those goals. read more

FAU is a pretty good school. Nice campus, however, the breezeway is under construction right now, so it's a mess. The parking is the worst thing about this university. It's VERY hard to find a spot during a busy time, (usually Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11-2). There's garages and everything but the parking is still very bad. The gym is nice but it's a little small I think for a big college. It does have a basketball court and a pool which is great, but the weights and machine area isn't as big as it should be. The new stadium is beautiful and you can actually drink in the student section! There's more than enough seats, and everything still seems new. They have a Chick-fil-A, Wendy's, Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks, and many other places to eat, including little stands with snacks. There's no Greek houses, so if you're into the Greek life and want to live in a frat house or a sorority house, this place is not for you. Some dorms are very nice, with bathrooms, own rooms, kitchen, living room and some even have a washer and dryer! FAU keeps growing and becoming more of a "collegey" university. GO OWLS read more

I am currently attending FAU as a graduate student in their 23 month Professional Master of Business Administration program, or as they like to call it, PMBA. I started classes back in January of 2015, and so far, so good! The PMBA program is geared specifically to students that work full time. Classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:15pm - 10:00pm, 2 classes per 10 week terms. As a student in the PMBA program, you never have to worry about anything. They call this perk their "VIP Concierge Service." PMBA students have a staff of advisors that cater just to them. We never have to leave the Office Depot Center for Executive Education for anything. In fact I have been going here for over 6 months and I have yet to go anywhere on campus except for the OD Center!! Before classes start, the PMBA advisors and staff hand us all books necessary- this means no trips to the book store and no having to stand in lines! The advisors also register you in all necessary classes- no waiting in front of your computer trying to sign up for that class you need! There is even a financial aid advisor on staff that keeps you up to date with all important fin-aid info. We also get "food" and drinks provided for us each evening. My only fault with the program is the "food." We have to come to class at dinner time, and all they provide us with are snacks, tea, coffee, sodas, juice and water. By snacks I mean bags of chips (lays, Sun Chips, Doritos, etc), cookies (oreos, and other processed sandwich cookies), fruit snacks, nuts, sunflower seeds, and other items that are by no means healthy or satisfying. Sometimes they have apples and bananas, but usually it's just the awful snacks. I don't understand why they have to be so cheap in this aspect. We pay a ton of money in tuition, so I don't get why they can't have sandwiches or salads every night. I'm personally trying to watch my carb and sugar intake, so I usually just get a coffee and a bag of sunflower seeds for dinner (how depressing!). Overall I am really enjoying the program. FAU is no UF (Where I did my Undergrad, Go Gators!), however, I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to go back to school for their MBA. read more

This university is the ultimate package in many, many ways. This review will encompass each aspect of the school that is important to a prospective student or anyone interested in FAU for any reason. Setting: The Boca Raton FAU campus (the main campus), is a bunch of ultra-modern student dorms, generously sized classroom buildings, cafeterias, and of course a football stadium, nestled in between a grid of luscious, shining palm trees, flowers and well-kept patches of Florida grass. Walking and studying on campus provides a beautiful and nurturing setting, which is helpful for any student. It allows this level of comfort, even though you are aware of being in a highly-pressured, academic environment. This campus is a joy to navigate through on a daily basis. Academics: Academically, FAU is definitely a challenge. I have not yet come across a class that did not require some amount of intensive studying every week. There are many doctorate professors of whom many have graduate level TA's standing by their sides, aiding in creating test questions and grading assignments. Each class has a serious curriculum, which is intended to convey critical information about the course that will actually be relevant for everyday living. There are a plethora of highly-skilled, expert professors at FAU, so the learning experience is a satisfying one. What's nice about this university is that there is a wide variety of classes for each major. A student who has a yearning for discovering everything about their major, especially juniors and up, have a real opportunity to select major-specific classes to learn from. Registration becomes tight rather quickly as the student population is about 32,000 at this moment, so it is important to get an early jump on class registration before it is too late. Transportation/Parking: This is the most highlighted issue at FAU. It's probably the most criticized aspect of the school (at least at the Boca campus). There are multiple parking garages on campus, but these get full really quickly, especially if you are coming to campus between 10 AM and 4 PM. A lot of students are forced to spot people walking to their cars and follow them to quickly take up their spot. There are many large parking lots scattered around campus as well, but during peak class hours, the situation is the same. Students usually have to get lucky, there won't simply be open spots waiting for people to claim them. As a student here, it's always a good idea to show up 30 mins or more before class in order to ensure you will have time for parking and walking to class. The parking could be better, and I'd expect that within the next couple of years that FAU will build an additional parking garage to reduce the congestion. FAU is a considerably diverse school. Students from all over the world can be found on campus at all times. The sub-tropical, Floridian setting is unique for any university and so many different types of collegiate students are attracted to FAU for this reason. I am an FAU Alum, and after graduating there I am happy to never look back. If you're not a person who has status or money you're a nobody. Not everyone is privileged to have money, so some of us have to work our way up. With that being said, I started off in the BS English education program but soon found that I had to do student teaching. What they don't tell you is that during student teaching, you're not allowed to have a job. I couldn't afford to do that. I put myself through college and paid my own bills. I was a full time student with a full time job. I decided to take the alternate route into teaching, which they also don't tell you about. And met with one of the Education counselors to get paper signed to change my degree to Interdisciplinary Studies which allowed me to graduate earlier, thus giving me the chance to start my career early. I sat in the counselors office, he told me that without the Education degree I would "never become a teacher" and "good luck trying to get a job teaching". It was terrible. I cried terribly. Thankfully the counselors at the Arts and Letters college were a bit more encouraging and apologized for that but the damage had been done. I would not recommend this school to anyone. read more

You should be a self-motivated student to go to this school; the introductory classes will often have hundreds of students and the guidance counselors can be rude and sometimes ignorant of basic requirements (especially if you want to go to grad school). They will tell you to take a class, and ask you the next semester why you took it. This is the reason I took both Calculus 1 and Methods of Calculus. Meet the advisors, get their stamps, and nod at their advice, but don't actually take it, or argue with them. You need to map your own plan. Also, the registrar is extremely disorganized--right when I filed my application for graduation, they told me I never took Chem 2 lab! Crazy, because it is a prereq for all the higher-level classes I took! I actually had to find five year old graded labs and submit a petition in order to graduate. Unfortunately, they took too long to approve it and I had to wait another six months to graduate. To date, that was one of the most frustrating things ever in my life! I could not graduate, and find a job, nor did I have any more classes left! I hated FAU so much at that time. However, since then, FAU has improved dramatically. They have added all these things in just the last ten years: -Einstein Bagels, Wendy's, Quiznos, Papa John's, Salsaritas, Starbucks -Dunkin Donuts in the library -Jewish Center (24 hour computer lab and study center) -A 60+ million dollar stadium -Shuttles for parking -A super fancy gym -Nicer dorms (i still remember the cement floors and cramped rooms of Timucua and Algonquin) -Second campus for UMiami medical school -Home of new FAU medical school There are several things I don't like about FAU, such as the lack of student unity, registrar disorganization, the parking issues, the fact that it is not very walkable, the lack of "hangout" places, enormous classes, and some of the faculty. It's very easy to get isolated and fail if you are not an outgoing, motivated person. If you are pre-professional, it can be hard to compete, given that there are hundreds of pre-meds/pre-dents/pre-pharm students in the same class. However, if you have a good idea of the path you want to take, FAU is a solid, very affordable option. Many of my friends have become accountants, engineers, nurses, and doctors with their FAU degrees at a cost which is one of the lowest in the US. read more

My son just transferred to FAU. As as high school guidance counselor, I will NEVER recommend this university to any student based on his experience thus far (5 days). Transfer students are treated like third-class citizens. They aren't given admission until December and then have to scramble to fit an orientation into their schedule before even seeing an adviser and schedule classes. Needless to say, they get whatever is leftover, meaning video classes for which they have to pay extra??? Seriously?? Why are there not enough sections to accommodate everyone who is accepted? Even setting up pre-determined blocks for new students would be better than this insanity. So now he has to sit in his dorm room and watch half of his classes via video...oh, and pay extra to do this...WTF???? He transferred from another state school and completed the information to show he was a in-state student, but was charged the tuition of an out-of-state student. His Bright Futures account was not linked to his FAU account so he's now dealing with that after straightening out the tuition issue. And these are only the issues he has told me about! Then comes housing where there is NO attempt whatsoever to match people according to personal schedules and interests. My son is a straight A student who doesn't drink or smoke. He was placed in a 4 bedroom apt where three guys who had obviously been together since September, have not cleaned since moving in in Sept. (bathroom almost made me throw up when I helped him move in), have no concept of headphones, and party til 4am every night. When my son called the housing office to request to be moved, he was told he had to wait another week (of sleepless nights) to complete an application to be moved. A nightmare!! I couldn't agree more with the reviewer that stated, "I can say with certainty that FAU has some of the absolute worst service I have ever encountered. I agree. You either hate it or love it. I have been attending fau for 4 years now and it has change drastically. There is a lot of construction going on and not enough parking yet. However, they are working really hard in expanding and improving the campus. Some teachers are great others are not. The Library is pretty big and they have several spots to study and hangout with classmates. The Food court is my main spot. They have Quiznos, Wendys, and other stations selling good food. We even have a Starbucks on campus. We were recently informed that we will have a stadium soon!! really excited to finally have the sport experience like other universities! This school is the cause for my anxiety, depression, and self loathing. I've been a student here for now 4 years and these are the things that I've noticed. This school is great for graduate students but that is also the downside to this university. Under-grads are extremely neglected and The advisers are practically useless. Trusting advisers is the reason my degree had 2-3 extra years added on to it. A great example would be how my personal adviser took 3 weeks to respond to an urgent email and added a whole year to my degree because of that. In fact the only reason that they responded was because after sending my 3rd email trying to contact them I put them up in general advising and a previous adviser of mine saw it and personally contacted them. Another thing is that the professors (or at least all but 2 of the ones I've had) have been awful. I've had professors that had such heavy accents that not only can none of the students not understand them but even the teaching assistants who are working under them for the class wouldn't know what they were saying, leading to us students having to sit through a lecture that nobody under stands and then self teaching from scratch for the rest of the semester. The math department in particular is horrible, yes the school offers free math tutoring but after you reach higher level math classes the tutors don't know how to help you at all. keep in mind that I am not saying that the people are horrible people, many of the professors are nice but at the end of the day were paying them to teach us and if they aren't able to do a good job teaching why are we paying for it. Next and MOST importantly is that the university is so UN-organized that its comical. FAU is so focused on getting a larger student body that they keep accepting more and more students even though the school is not able to handle the sheer amount of people traffic that it has. There are students that are living in a hotel near campus because they school accepted them to live on campus but didn't have enough dorm rooms to house them. With that in mind the school is currently in the process of demoing one of the dorms as we speak reducing on campus living even further. Another dorm UVA is well over 100% capacity because they took all the single room suite units threw another bed in them and now for roughly the same price as it was to live in them as a single you have even less space and have to share it. On top of this the school has a horrible parking situation. The school does NOT have enough parking for the amount of students it has on campus during the day an what did the school do to counter it? they closed off one of the 3 parking garages and are in the process of converting it, and not converting it into a living space but converting it into a classroom, further reducing the parking available while allowing them to take in even more students. This is my condensed review of this university. P.S. If you have a medical withdraw please take note that your grace period for your student loans will start counting down. The school seems to like to keep that a secret, as well as require petitions for everything you do after coming back. read more
