My favorite part is the pine tree area near the pond. The pine tree needles lay on the ground and when the wind blows the sound is melodic blowing through the pine trees. There is one picnic table to sit on for a picnic, but try and ignore the graffiti. There is an area that's preserved and protected for Burrowing owls. I wish I could have seen one or two, but no luck this time. There is traffic noise and watch for what looks like a homeless individual who had ridden a bike in.

The park is off Tamiami Trail / U.S. 41. Williams Park is nearby as well as the Manatee Viewing Center. Nice park across from the Mosaic Plant on the inland side of 41. The park is open with lush (highish) grass a couole picnic tables and some rocky mangrovey shoreline with a couple open spots on the Alafia River. Very pretty. Good place to play fetch. The Apollo Beach Dogpark, E.G. Simmon ($2) and Apollo Beach Preserve (when it reopens) are also good area spots. There is an eatery on the water on the other side of the river off Ohio Ave (take a left going south on 41 on Pennsylvania Ave., left on Massachusetts and lef on Ohio. It's called the River's edge and is very casual for wings, oysters, fried clams, grouper sammiches, peel n eat shrimp and deviled crab. BLTs too.

The water was cold as usual but pretty clear this visit we were able to see lots of fish and some were even nibbling on our feet if we stayed still. There were lifeguards out watching the area and was very on top of people not bringing pool floats on the separate side where the spring was. Definitely recommend checking this one out before summers over.

We had a small dog with us at our campsite, and he briefly walked over to the campsite next to us. A staff member approached us and told us that if our dog was not kept on a leash, he would ask us to leave. We understand the rule and had no issue complying with it, but the way he spoke to us was unnecessarily rude and disrespectful. I am an IR nurse, and I always treat my patients with compassion and respect. Imagine if this staff member arrived at the IR department in pain or with an injury and was treated with the same level of rudeness. Everyone deserves to be treated with kindness, dignity, and respect.

The brief review I wrote down when I got back to my car was that this trail is Short, Loud, and the…read moreParking is weird. I date to say this trail is more than a mile long but I could be wrong. It's paved the whole way and has a pond running most of the length of it. There are plenty of places to sit if you get tired or watch the birds. Now is it peaceful? Hmm...as many others have mentioned, it's close to a very busy road and all the roads that intersect are also very busy. Even with headphones on, it's still pretty loud. You also have to cross one of the busy streets near the parking area and you really have to be cautious because there is no stoplight and only one of the three directions has a stop sign so two of the streets don't have to yield and may not see you crossing. The parking is also odd. There is a small paved area that stops at the dead-end down by TD Bank and you can park on the shoulders and grass on both sides of the street leading to the dead end. If you don't like parking in the grass you should probably get here during non-peak times as the parking fills up quickly. Honestly, I'd rather walk off-trail in the grass like on a hiking trail as it's not as harsh on my feet but if you're just looking for a short trail to do some running or walk in the evening, then this might be the spot for you.

As we walked towards the park I pulled up the Yelp reviews of the park and was surprised. It had such low marks. Looking around, it seemed like a cute park so I was ready to give this park a lot higher marks. But, after experiencing it, I can't go much higher. The trails themselves are pretty awesome. Lots of unique landscaping, rustic trails and a very cool foot bridge. Also the flora and fauna are top notch. So what's not to like? The trail markings aren't very clear. I had to stay on the phone with my wife, daughter and sister-in-law to help them get back to the playground portion of the park. There is a basketball court...with no rims to play with. There are bathrooms...that were locked in the middle of the day. Tough on my coffee filled bladder and on my son's potty training self. We had to drive elsewhere just to go. I've come to expect great things from Hillsborough County Parks. Wortham, unfortunately, does not live up to those expectations.
