We normally cruise to the market to get the flowers we need, but when time is limited, then we head to Takapuna's premier florist and flower wholesaler. Their stock is limited, but there is normally enough to create a masterpiece that will bring tears to the eyes of the recipient. I like to tag along, as they can make up bunches to order, and for a guy on the move, I'm always using the visits as a good excuse to get gifts for all the staff who've done me favours in recent days. So our visit is a win win situation. The staff are helpful and friendly, and the shop is easy to access from the motorway, plus there is always parking right in front.

With the amount I was willing to spend, I wasn't expecting anything amazing. I ended up calling Roses on Friday afternoon to arrange 3 bouquets to be picked up on Saturday at 2pm. I told the florist to surprise me and just give me what they could. On saturday, the day of the pageant I got so overwhelmed I forgot to pick up the flowers. Thankfully I got a call and when I explained I wouldn't make it to the florist before it closed, the florist offered to leave the flowers at the shop next door to be picked up and I could leave the money there. When the flowers finally arrived to the venue, they where so beautiful and I could not believe I had only spent $50.

When I stopped to smell the roses - literally - the woman came out of the store and stood with me chatting about the nice weather and her favourite flowers. Not the best symbol of everlasting love. Get me something practical, like a frying pan any day. But most girls do like flowers. On the days when you have dug yourself the worlds biggest hole and your gf hates you, nothing says forgive me like a nice bouquet. This is a nice little flower shop, that will certainly go some way into helping you dig your way out of that hole. The lady I talked to when I was in there was super helpful and friendly. And they had a good selection of nice fresh blooms, at not unreasonable prices (is fresh a word you can use when referring to flowers?) Outside on a table that had been set up they even had a selection of cute wee hair clips and headbands as well, so maybe include one of those to really sweeten the deal ( it really just depends on how much trouble you ARE in)

You can also pick up Oakdale Organics vegetable and herb seedlings starting from 3.99 each or 3 for 10, which seems to be a good deal. Inside you will find all sorts of gardening supplies and also plenty of gifts, such as potted plants, ornaments and various gardening accessories. And if you have a little one with you, then Sunhill has arranged for that too, with a small playground at the back overlooking the Apirana Reserve.

A full selection of plants and flowers can be found at King's. From vegetable seedlings through to fruit trees, natives and this seasons new roses - you can find it all at King's. Besides the onsite cafe, King's Plant barn also offer a wide range of gardening essentials, tools, gifts and other such paraphernalia. I recently bought a bamboo woven heart on a stand for my Aunt's birthday as a garden sculpture and the staff also gift wrapped it beautifully for me free of charge. A friend of mine also went to King's in search of some herbs to grow in her flat, and she actually left with an amazing wooden planter box already planted with an array of herbs and spices. It was brilliant, and would make a great gift. The staff are really knowledgeable and helpful, and with young strapping men on site specifically to help you carry heavy items (like compost and soil) to your car - King's Plant Barn provide an all-round service and it's pretty unbeatable.
