Doesn't…read moresound like the best of combos, but it works and the staff was surprisingly friendly (unlike a GameStop). I was stuck in the UK without an adapter for my MacBook Air (yes, I'm an idiot) and this crowded little store had them for less than the price of my firstborn son. Seriously Apple, WTF is up with your exorbitant hardware prices? So I was able to save the day (and keep my job) with the help of the slightly overwhelmed, but generally nice, CeX staff. Yes, they'll hit you up to join their club or whatever corporate has them peddling, but they're forced to do that so I wouldn't hold it against them.

The shelves seem busier and some of the Christmas gift ideas are really good. Who wouldn't enjoy a radio-controlled rat, or mini walkie-talkies with a 5km range? Small Christmas trees made of plastic circuit board catch my eye: you have to build them up yourself and feature LEDs for lights. Being a bit of an electronics geek I always find Maplin to be a good browse, though they are sometimes overpriced. But all the sale shelves in the Putney branch quickly put my mind at ease. A nice and inexpensive gift for a music lover is a box of blank CD-Rs that look like little records. There's also always something for mom, dad, little brother or sister. Maplin Putney always has knowledgeable staff on hand to field more technical questions too.

The range is great, they always have good offers, the service is excellent and the staff really know their stuff. I found it amusing that they set up this branch about three doors down from the much more expensive Sevenoaks Hi-Fi, which you would only want to visit if you were seriously minted. About the only thing they don't really do is iPods, but if you're looking for CD players, amps, DVD players, speakers, TVs, headphones, racks etc, give Currys a miss and go here instead.
