After tossing our last expensive beach umbrella we finally decided it was time for a Shibumi! Fly It Port A was our "go to". They had every shade under the sun! Jeremy showed us the Shibumi and another shade that was equally as good and explained their differences. What a great, fun business! I made a wrong turn and ended up at the right place! I had seen these cute whirligig kinds of things that were shaped like jellyfish at another campers RV and went in to see if they had it...and they did! I made a wrong turn because someone gave me wrong directions but I said it was right because the owner and her assistant were super sweet and brought out a tourist map and showed me how to get to the jetty boat so I could go shelling tomorrow. We stopped here after eyeing kites in the big souvenir shops and I'm really glad we did. They had well made kites in a variety of sizes and prices. We spent $20 on a nylon kite that will last us for a few years and felt in the long run it was better than buying a $5 plastic kite that would be thrown in the trash when we were done. The owner was very helpful and helped us pick out the perfect easy kite to fly. They had more advanced kites if you were up for the challenge - which we were not. Always a great place to get toys for the beach. Most of them are a great workout for people that don't exercise much. The owner always has insight about the best things to use for this weeks wind conditions. I have kits in my beach bag going back to a 2002 era wind foil kite and i bought it here. Something I like is that the owner doesn't push sales. I end up spending less than I want to, but buying just the right amount of things for a very fun voice flying visit on the beach. Remember that different strength winds need different strength kite lines. On a strong wind day, use bravery and stringer line - and add a tail to your kite to make it easier to steer. On a light wind day, use light line to maintain responsiveness The owner sewed a loop onto a small kite I've owned for many years so I could attach a tail for greater control. That is the good kind of service you get here. read more

A paper airplane kite complete with lines from the yellow paper? Check. A dragon? Yes. A skull and crossbones? Yes. Your limit is your imagination. They are also heavily stocked with windsocks, a vast array of flags, books, and lots of other stuff that will have you smiling from ear to ear. The owner had tons of tips and suggestions and his collection of unique kites, pictures and stories were something that made the experience that much more fun. I walked in just curious and walked out excited to play with my brand new kite! PS. In normal circumstances, I wouldn't be able to fly a kite for the life of me. A great little shop in Port A. We were down there for a long weekend and one day my husband said this would be perfect kite weather. A little Google search later and here we were. Shop owner was talking to some locals about kites. You can tell this is a thing here. And this is the shop. Yea, there are a few kites in the tourist shops but the kites here are better. This place is awesome. My husband and I stopped by because we wanted a kite to fly on the beach like all the cool kids. As we started looking around there were almost too many kites to choose from! Eventually we decided on a shark shaped kite and headed up to the nice older man at the register. We talked to him about the weather a bit and he said it should clear up that afternoon and we'd be able to fly it. He also did a brief explanation on how to put it together. Later on when we were at the beach one of the first things we did was to get it flying. It was a lot of fun seeing how high we could get it and having it sail in the breeze while we took in the beautiful view of the waves. We will definitely be going back next time we're down there to pick up another one to add to our collection. read more

This is a little long, but I want you to know and feel where you are going. Fly It Port A quickly became my favorite place in Port Aransas. The shop first cut my attention with all of the colorful flags and wind spinners on the outside. When you go inside, it is a wonderland of all things wind related, from flags and banners, to windsocks, to spinners, and kites from one end of the spectrum to the other. A kite selection that includes everything from kiddie kites that cost only a few bucks to professional kites with dual lines and quad lines, also very large and showy kites. There is also an extensive collection of hard to find toys and puzzles. Ralph quickly took me in and re-introduced me to kite flying as an adult. He is very knowledgeable and extremely patient when sharing that knowledge. He has completely and totally fueled my passion for this hobby. Sure, you can buy a "kite" at a big box store, but that will leave you disappointed and it is completely different from what you will find at Fly It Port A. When you compare apples to apples, you will find this local shop very competitive. I have now been to the shop several times and have always been treated very fairly and gain more knowledge and passion with each visit. I look forward to the next time I get to stop in. I can almost guarantee that you will find something that makes you say "That is so cool!" and I'm pretty sure that temptation will overcome and you won't leave empty handed.
