Great selection - pricey but high quality yarn. There are also scissors, stitch markers, and a limited selection of patterns.

They have a beautiful selection of yarns, all of which are wool or wool blends (for example I saw a lovely yarn 70% wool 30% silk, I'm not talking about polyester or synthetics). The shop is very cute and they also have some baby clothes, buttons, hooks, and accessories. What made it 3 stars for me was the service I experienced. When I entered the store, there were three people there (I believe they were all employees, at least one is) just chatting. They continued to ignore me the whole time we were there, and did not even say hello. Once I was clearly ready to check out, one of the employees finally said "if you need anything let me know". I was helped checking out, and ended up ordering yarn they did not have enough of in store. They quoted me 1 week, and said they'd call me when it's in. Well, it's been 2.5 weeks and I never heard a peep, so I called them. They said it'll be another week at least. It's not the wait I am upset by because shipping delays are out of their control, but the complete lack of notification. In my opinion it's bad service to not notify someone if there's going to be SUCH a delay. Part of why I enjoy shopping locally and small businesses, other than the ethics, is the amazing customer service. It really put me off how ignored I was both in store and with my order. I'm not sure I can recommend this store, especially when I have received great service at other yarn stores in westchester. Disappointing. read more

I stopped in this adorable shop while traveling through the area! The women working were incredibly friendly and helpful as I looked around the shop. The shop is so neat inside with all sorts of different yarn and has a neat little loft on the second floor with even more goodies! The short of it is that I overall had a good experience with this local yarn shop and would buy from again. I have no qualms recommending this place to my family or friends. Here's the long version: I called the shop because I had two partially completed knitted projects I needed advice on. Elise, the owner, was friendly and helpful. I had decided to visit because I was also interested in the button selection for another ongoing project. The shop has two floors. Apparently the person who owns Tarrytown Music Hall is her landlord. The lower floor is where the cash register and yarn shelves are (on left), on the right is more yarn, to the center back is where the classes are held, even further back towards the right are stairs leading up to the second floor. The second floor has some yarn and two seating areas where one can knit and peruse through fashion books or magazines. She has a good selection of yarn ranging from classic solids, handspun, art yarns, mohair, and varying weights of each. There was a basket of mini skeins too. Some of the brands I saw were Blue Sky, Rowan, Manos del Uruguay, Berrocco, and many more. I arrived at a very busy time but she was still friendly and attentive towards all her customers including me. I bought several items from her including yarn, a book, a tac pin, a pattern stand, and buttons. I'm happy with my purchases and wish I resided closer to Tarrytown. It's a cute, cozy store where I genuinely felt welcomed. A few weeks after I placed an order over the phone for several skeins I needed to complete a wrap. Elise came through for me. The skeins arrived less than a week and she notified me that they were ready for pick up at my convenience. I was impressed because I've encountered so many people who don't follow through with their promises- either forgetting to place the order for me or forgetting to call me that my order is ready for pick up. My second face-to-face encounter was just as pleasant as the first though she was busy this day as well. I had read some previous reviews and felt they were unfair to the owner. While she did stay seated at the cash register the entire time I was there (about 35-45 minutes), she did offer her help to me a few times and not in a pushy way. At the time, she and an instructor were the only staff there. The instructor was busy overseeing her students' work. I didn't mind that she didn't get up to help me and I also believe that she may have mobility issues? She was also wearing what looked to be compression fingerless gloves. I had overheard that she was experiencing shoulder problems. Please have some compassion before leaving potentially unfair comments. read more

I went to this place with my sister so she could get some crocheting yarn with her gift card. I had never been inside and my first word was... WOWWWWIt's so cool inside, they have so many different colors of yarn as well as many various materials so you have a lot of choices to pick from. Also, there is quite a range of prices so you can get a small, decent ball a yarn for about 6ish dollars. Ho-hum. The store looks very cute from the street but I was disappointed once I entered and had a look around. The owner sat behind the register eating the entire time I was there. Another worker was starting a beginning knit class w 6-8 high schoolers. (I noticed that she didn't introduce herself or tell the kids what was going on... seems pretty basic to me. Her first instruction was, "Cast on 90 stitches!" Several kids were struggling.) Another employee was rearranging the displays. I was politely greeted when I entered - which seems to be unusual as opposed to a normal way of conducting retail business - for yarn stores in the area. The stock seemed a bit beat up, likely due to the fact that much of it is tightly crammed onto the shelves. There didn't seem to be much organization to the yarn. Colors are all jumbled together. I found similar looking yarns of different brands mixed in with each other. If I had a pattern already picked out, I'd go nuts trying to figure out if there was enough of the same color/dye lot in this store. Up a narrow stairway is a ricketey balcony with a small selection of yarn, magazines, and patterns in binders. Another small selection of books and magazines was near the front door, with more magazines near the register. Lots of buttons and notions in the front/corner window but that area was rather cramped. Typical cute LYS but nothing out of the ordinary. This is a small shop. The selection is decent but nothing spectacular. Perhaps the warehouse has a lot? Perhaps the old location was bigger? Unless there was a big sale (or I just wanted to spend an afternoon in picturesque Tarrytown), this would not be worth the ride from NYC. I'll definitely head back for sales, but it left something to be desired. Very few seats and it was very warm in there even though it was April. The owner was not very kind or helpful. I bought 6 skeins of yarn (on sale at various levels of discount) and was strongly discouraged when seeking to have one of them wound. I explained that I was happy to wind it myself and she said "Good because I don't wind sale yarn." I've been to many yarn stores across the country and had never had anyone hesitate to wind yarn because it was on sale. Generally, that only happens when the store is busy. This was not a busy time at the store. But as I said cute place, cute street and I picked up a few random things. read more

This is a good local yarn shop; not worth a long drive but worth coming to from the NYC area. The shop is small but at least it is not dark with lots of light from the lovely old shop windows. They have a nice mix of yarns in each size and style and content but not all the types you can find in other shops in the greater area. There were two people helping -the owner is very 'accessible' giving good ideas for xmas gifts for shoppers while i was there and a young hispanic person showing a new knitter how to cast on. read more

Just ordinary, and very small. Maybe I got there on a bad day, but the stock looked old and a bit shopworn, there was very little luxury yarn, and the staff was a bit unfriendly. Stared at you while you browsed, but never greeted or offered to help. DId I miss part of the store? A tiny room with an even smaller balcony? It certainly wasn't the largest selection of yarn on the east coast that the first reviewer described. I won't be back. Wost LYS experience ever! You know how, usually when you shop local for yarn, the staff is helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly--like they want your repeat business? At least that's always been my experience... ...Except at Flying Fingers! The shop has changed completely since moving from Irvington. When I walk in, I get the distinct impression that I'm not wanted, and it seems like they resent customers purchasing any item on which they are not making a maximum profit. This shop is neither an asset to the local community, nor a asset to the knitting community at large. Case in point, this story is just one extreme example of a lack of service and respect I've experienced at Flying Fingers in the past: I've been teaching my mother to knit but haven't had time to set her up on her next project. We have the wool, which we bought directly from Solitude farm in VA, and a pattern from my file, but she needed needles. So I told her that if she brings the wool and the pattern to Flying Fingers, they would be able to help her choose the right needles. Well, I was wrong! Instead, the proprietor told her that "I don't like to sell needles when you haven't bought your wool here, and since it's not my wool I'm not sure I can help you." What?! First of all, we spent $800 on wool from Flying Fingers just this summer! Secondly, what makes her think we are ever going to buy our wool there if that's how we're going to be treated, or that we would recommend the shop to friends? In contrast, my LYS (Cornwall Yarn Shop) and any others I have visited will gladly help me find what I need, tell me to take my time and look around, and ball my yarn for me--and almost inevitably, some wonderful yarn catches my eye and I ultimately purchase more than I came in for. Needless to say, both my mother and I will be taking our business elsewhere from now on--whether that means driving the extra distance or ordering online. Please don't shop at Flying Fingers--it's a lousy business, and as long as they fail to treat (formerly loyal) customers with respect, it will continue to go downhill. Other negatives: small crowded space means it's tough to access stock, and no place to "sit & knit"; overall unfriendly atmosphere, selection is nothing special. The only plus? It's local, and more variety that Walmart. read more

Used to go here all the time however the service has really turned me off from this place while Dylan is very friendly and willing to help I too feel as if the owner is nothing but rude. Like others have said I feel unwanted when I walk in to this shop and have literally spent about 300 dollars here in the last month and they will never have my business again. I really wanted to like this store. A lot of what I had heard about it from other knitters was very positive. However, I found that it was just... kind of ho-hum. I made a special trip to go there and it was just... OK. When I walked in and saw that they had used a lot of Lamb's Pride Wool to either - and I still am not really sure what it was - fill in a lot of spaces and decorate spaces where there could've been some very cool yarn, I was already disappointed. Don't get me wrong - they do have some cool, higher end yarn - but just not enough of it. No Madelinetosh whatsoever and no fun Koiugu. I think it's a nice store, but if you are looking for something a little more out of the ordinary, I'm not sure if you're going to find it at this yarn store. Have always had great experiences with this store and its staff. They stock a lot of the yarns I like to use, and let me interrupt them with my questions. What's not on the shelves but in their warehouse they call for and have delivered to the shop within 10-15 minutes. It is a small shop, but they make good use of the display space. Sales are legitimate, and not overstock orphans from the yarn companies. Crafters: plan your trip to Tarrytown to include coffee up the street or lunch at one of the nearby restaurants. I've since moved out of the area but if I find myself there, I'd definitely stop in again! read more

I have been taking knitting lessons at Flying Fingers for almost two years. I love this shop. The yarn is top quality. The lessons meet your individual needs and the ambiance in the store is relaxed and casual. I have often gone in to just ask a question or get help with a project I am working on and they always have time to sit with me and help me out. Diana is a wonderful teacher with tremendous patience. Dylan has a great sense of design and color and can look at a pattern and know what yarn will work .Elysie has the answers to all questions concerning knitting from needles to choice of buttons to selection of yarn. Flying Fingers is the real deal of a yarn store. It offers instruction in several ways and encourages community participation. The selection is what can be expected in a local store--not necessarily comprehensive but good variety with some choices of hand-dyed, artisan years.along with expected good brands such as Liberty. If you don't see what you want, ask. They have more yarn in their storage area. I can usually find something that fulfills or inspires a project idea. Very knowledgeable staff. read more

I just thought this place was adorable. I went in with my best friend and boyfriend when we were touring the sleepy hollow area and they were entertained as non-knitters by the beauty of the store and the fact that the yarn goes up to the ceiling! It may seem inaccessible but the son of the owner was so helpful with all the customers- getting things down, answering questions, and he spun my 4 skeins of yarn from the loops where they tangle into working skeins all while chatting and smiling. I felt bad to make him do it but he wasn't phased at all. The owner was helping a woman who just could not decide on a color yarn but when I was waiting to ask the price of the skein she acknowledged me to ask if I needed anything and quickly scanned them and told me the price. They didn't have what I had gone in for but when I mentioned what I was looking for a woman promptly told me they didn't have it and when I asked what was comparable she pointed me in the direction (lucky for me this was cheaper! woohoo). I found it to be fairly priced which is not what I was expecting! Friendly staff, gorgeous yarn, and it is so warm inside because the yarn basically insulates the wall! I purchased yarn for a sweater my friend is knitting for me for my wedding about a month ago. A week before my wedding she told me she was running out. I flew over to the store in a panic, hoping they would have more of the same yarn I purchased but the store was closed! I called and wrote an email that it was urgent that I get the yarn. The owner got back to me on email within an hour, went to the store and opened it so I would be able to get the yarn I needed. I was amazed by such amazing costumer service!!! Cute store. I'm not a yarn buff so I can't really speak to their selection. But when I have a project and need a certain color/weight of yarn, I can find it here. They have reasonable prices, and and their hours are pretty good so I can easily pick stuff up after work. They have all sorts of needles, too, and the ladies who work there (possibly the owners?) were helpful in showing me what type of needles I needed for my project. read more
