Weather changes and adjusted weekend plans led friends and I to the 7pm performance yesterday evening at Kirkwood. Not wanting to be backpacking to an alpine wilderness lake when a little rain predicted became a bigger 6 hour lightning storm, we opted to see the adult version of the Flynn Creek Circus's "Desert Myth" performance. The audience seating inside the tent were not the typical single seats, only, arrangement . Seats were sold as bench/folding chair table lots closer to the stage, stool/tall bar table lots, or as individual folding chairs. It actually makes total sense as people often enjoy shows with a few friends. The performance in the evening was the adult version of the show. A little more skin is showed, and a few more adult joke content. The performance lasted 2 hours and was very entertaining! Well worth the ticket price. There were some aerial acts, some juggling acts, and some cactus clowning. Some of the aerialists had quite electrifying performances! read more

This was my son's first circus. It was a really great experience. He is two and a half, I wasn't sure what to expect, but we dressed up suit and tie and did it! Those people work their asses off. They run the entire show and run from job to job. The effort is noticed. Keep on hustlin'! We hope to see you next year. Also my son doesn't want to wear anything but the circus shirt we got that is my size and amazingly big on him. I took my five year old to see the show and it was pretty cool! I was impressed by the hula girl and ropes swingers etc. it was entertaining and my son seemed to be absolutely infatuated by all the cool body movements. The only reason I only gave 4 stars is because it was inconvenient to use debit card to pay for tix at door and the concession stand. We saw a different small circus in a small town a couple of years ago, and it was so annoying that we almost skipped the Flynn Creek Circus. We are so glad that we didn't. They put on a solid, two-hour show with plenty of fun and excitement. My favorite was the slack-line dancer, who was not only incredibly skilled, but also clearly enjoying himself. I'd recommend this circus for anyone with school-age kids. The seating is half solid iron benches and half flimsy folding chairs. Unless you're springing for front-row seats, there are no assigned seats, and you may want to arrive 30 minutes early to pick a seat that has a good view/isn't blocked by the tent poles. At $30ish per adult, the tickets aren't cheap, but they are reasonably priced for what you get. Also - unlike that other annoying outfit - they don't try to upsell you on toys and over-priced food every few minutes, so you can really focus on the performance. read more

What John M. said is right on. We hadn't seen this troupe before, just got back from their first-night Corvallis, OR, show and want to recommend them. This is a clever, funny, hip (as a native Portlander, I say that with authority), affordable, and totally kid-happy performance. Being essentially a dress rehearsal, tonight's show didn't go perfectly, but even the few small fumbles and unclear audio were fun and made it that much more human, especially given the world-class level of numerous performers (the rabbit, the jugglers, the acrobats, oh my). The band is skillful, playful, energetic yah!, versatile - everything from classic Hungarian to cartoon and Hawaii 5-0 themes. And you haven't lived until you've heard "Thus spake Zarathustra" played on the accordion. I don't even like the accordion, but these guys were so on target. The performers do a great job drawing in the audience, especially the kids - and if you can't bring your inner child to the circus, please don't bother yourself and the rest of us by going. The way every person in the show watches out for each other is truly inspiring. We had a great time and will for sure be attending next year. read more

I took my 5 year old granddaughter to see Flynn Creek Circus. Before the show the performers were friendly and available mingling with the crowd. I liked how simple this circus is without animals to be cruel to and without clowns in costume that could scare the children and adults. There were people doing clown things just without the garish make up. My granddaughter loved the ringmaster who portrayed a funny and original Pirate. I liked that there was just one show I remember seeing Barnum and Bailey as a child and there was just too much going on to see it all. My granddaughter loved it and I found it very entertaining also. This is a small operation who are reviving circus tradition. The look on my granddaughter's face made attending Flynn Creek Circus worth all effort and every penny. read more

We went to the "adult" show because it was the one that fit our schedule. It's an "over 21" show, which is ironic because few people over 21 are likely to find the farting and juvenile sexual humor funny. Almost half an hour in, the jugglers came out. They weren't exceptional, but relative to the first half an hour, they were spectacular. The crowd gave them a huge applause because at least they were entertaining. Then it was back to farting, crass jokes, a mediocre magician, and generally subpar acts (with a few other performers who did display legitimate talent, like the unicycle riders and the acrobats with braids). The most irritating part of the show was the rabbit, who kept reappearing. She was full of foul adolescent sex jokes and gestures, which were neither funny nor sexy. We couldn't take it anymore and left at intermission. What a waste of time and money. We usually love small circuses, but this was stupid, raunchy, and boring--with short bursts of entertainment. If you go, go to a kids' version. And take a 5-year old, who won't be bothered by the low level of talent. read more

I went into this show with the lowest of expectations and I was in no way pleasantly surprised. If you and your family plan on visiting this cringe-worthy display, I strongly advise you think again. I attended with my mother who was very unhappy that she had to spend near $80 on tickets. We sat down in our seats and knew we had made a mistake when the band started. It continued playing for far longer than was needed and summed up the rest of this catastrophe. The rabbit, one of the main characters of the show was quite over the top and had a harsh voice that tested my patients. The acts themselves were sub-par and mediocre at best. Although I can not write about the second half of the show since we had to escape at intermission I can assure you they were just as bad as the first half. The juggling was below my expectation due to the statement on the website that the jugglers were supposedly "internationally acclaimed". The trapeze was decent but nothing too impressive and the knife-throwing was borderline sketchy as the people throwing the knives seemed ill practiced as missed their throws more than I would have thought "professionals" would. The card magic session was quite assinine and made me feel like the magician was being almost condescending, the whole thing taking up almost ten minutes when it could have easily been done in five. The only redeeming quality I found was that there was a big bag of cotton candy in which I drowned my sorrows. read more
