Does it somehow look familiar? This was a study for A Sunday on the Island of la Grande Jatte! "This work is one of many that Georges-Pierre Seurat made in preparation for a much larger painting. The woman's stiff posture is accentuated by her tightly buttoned jacket and the exaggerated bustle of her skirt, which echoes the curve of her parasol. Given that the area of Paris depicted here was known for prostitution, it has been suggested that the woman is a sex worker on the arm of a male client." Give yourself several hours if you plan to take in the entire collection. If you are fortunate enough to live nearby and can visit often, take your time and you're sure to fall in love with one of the many wonderfully curated items found within the museum walls.

From what I saw, I would say it can fit around 200 people. Red wine lovers should remember to think of other alternatives or have their red wine before coming to gallery, as red wine is not permitted on site.

The site used to be the sewage pumping station for Cambridge (!) and there is some surprisingly interesting information on the history of sewerage in Cambridge (true !).

The entrance to this museum is rather historic as is most of Cambridge. Although this museum is small the items encased within it's walls are interesting and some even leave you staring for a while. This, nor any museum in Cambridge can out shine free museums in, let's say, London but we must appreciate it for what it is. If you don't allow yourself to expect too much from this museum then you shall not be too disappointed.

It is a testament to the fun of the place that Harry had no interest in taking a walk down memory lane with me as I gawked at my first computer, a Compaq 'portable' (HA HA!) that had a 6-inch green screen and weighed a svelte 28 pounds; ancient rotary phones and the square Macs launched in 1986 that were a staple of every university computer lab (put in the disk, put in the disk, put in the disk, put in the disk...remember? Looking more like an old couple's collection or the back room of an ex-explorer, which may be no bad thing, the Scott polar research institute is more a collection of artefacts than a grand museum; a traditional, display-cabinet affair rather than a modern, interactive experience. This, however, means that everything in genuine and unadorned, which gives perhaps a greater sense of the place and the people. The artefacts are truly fascinating and to read some of the postcards is to be transported to those arctic tents. Be sure you check the opening hours, it closes earlier than expected.

With a fantastic location opposite the entrance to King's College, this is a great place to come in and browse - and for that reason, if you want some buying advice, you may have to wait a while due to the sheer number of people who wander in. However, the staff do really know their stuff and are extremely helpful, even for novices who might feel a little intimidated. I first went in with only a vague idea of the kind of thing I wanted and came away with much useful information. Later, having bought the prints we wanted, we took them to the Lawson Framing Gallery and had them expertly mounted and framed.
