Does it somehow look familiar? This was a study for A Sunday on the Island of la Grande Jatte! "This work is one of many that Georges-Pierre Seurat made in preparation for a much larger painting. The woman's stiff posture is accentuated by her tightly buttoned jacket and the exaggerated bustle of her skirt, which echoes the curve of her parasol. Given that the area of Paris depicted here was known for prostitution, it has been suggested that the woman is a sex worker on the arm of a male client." Give yourself several hours if you plan to take in the entire collection. If you are fortunate enough to live nearby and can visit often, take your time and you're sure to fall in love with one of the many wonderfully curated items found within the museum walls.

Darwin's famous 'Beagle' voyage. As well, as Finback Whale sceleton, which has been moved to museum from a different place at the end of 20th century. This whale is huge!! And I mean it. It is the second biggest whale on this planet. I don't think I would ever like to see it alive in front of me.... The other great thing - you can hire a gallery for a special event. From what I saw, I would say it can fit around 200 people. Red wine lovers should remember to think of other alternatives or have their red wine before coming to gallery, as red wine is not permitted on site.

This, nor any museum in Cambridge can out shine free museums in, let's say, London but we must appreciate it for what it is. It is a testament to the fun of the place that Harry had no interest in taking a walk down memory lane with me as I gawked at my first computer, a Compaq 'portable' (HA HA!) that had a 6-inch green screen and weighed a svelte 28 pounds; ancient rotary phones and the square Macs launched in 1986 that were a staple of every university computer lab (put in the disk, put in the disk, put in the disk, put in the disk...remember? Old computers, punch cards, electronics, data processors, military grade computers, tubes, make your own tape, old floppy discs and on and on. The crown jewel is the incredible number of gaming consoles and arcade units, all of which are free to play. They even had small handhelds, early stuff and a gameboy. This place legit had it all, what an amazing walk down nostalgia lane. Highlight of my visit to UK.

Kettle's Yard House is awesome!…read more It is a free museum which displays the personal art collection of Jim and Helen Ede. Jim was a curator for the Tate in the 1920s, and made friends with lots of young artists...and acquired their work before they were famous. I guess he was the ultimate hipster - he knew all the best artists before they became well known...so he was hipster half a century before the word was invented. Anyway the "house" is actually four cottages that have been knocked together to create light, interesting spaces on several levels. It seems pretty small until you climb the stairs and find room after room of art, sculpture and prettily arranged pebbles and house plants. It doesn't feel like a museum - there are no plaques explaining the works, and visitors are encouraged to sit down, read books from their library and enjoy the space as if it was your own home. It seems to be run by volunteer enthusiasts...so I really liked chatting to the staff as we wandered around the space. It is also a venue for concerts. If I lived in Cambridge I'd definitely want to pop in to hear their grand pianos!! To be honest, I wasn't that keen on quite a large proportion of the pieces BUT I loved the architecture and enjoyed wandering around.

It's best to visit when the museum is "in steam", i.e. with the various machines actually working. My 2 1/2 year-old son was very keen on the various mechanical objects, including a 1940s steam car which turned up. Probably not suitable for girly girls who like ponies and ballet and with some very hot surfaces around you need to keep a close eye on young ones. The site used to be the sewage pumping station for Cambridge (!) and there is some surprisingly interesting information on the history of sewerage in Cambridge (true !).

I first went in with only a vague idea of the kind of thing I wanted and came away with much useful information. Later, having bought the prints we wanted, we took them to the Lawson Framing Gallery and had them expertly mounted and framed.
