Many places in Venice are very popular and therefore very busy. And very well known.
This stretch along the canal is also pretty busy, but more busy with a younger crowd and locals. Of course plenty of international visitors as well. But if feels different here, definitely a different vibe. More relaxed, more casual - maybe also a bit more next generation.
Along the canal there are plenty of restaurants, cafés and cicchetti bars. And surprisingly many a tad upscale and more of the creative/innovative kind. Some cheap eats of course as well. But it seems to cater to a bit more hip crowd here.
And I enjoyed and embraced that change of pace and vibe here along this canal. It was fun to stroll along and to explore the different bars, restaurants and menus. And since a bit less crowded, it also is a bit more relaxing to walk. If you really want a very local and otherwise quite empty Fondamenta, then you should head to the nearby Fondamenta Cannaregio - makes a nice evening walk.
On this Fondamenta here we've found two places especially interesting. The Bacaro del Gelato for great Italian ice cream in various flavours. And the just next-to Cicchetti Bar Vino Vero. Very creative combinations of cicchetti. And less about Prosecco and Aperol here, but a real focus on a bit higher priced, but very excellent red and white wines! A real gem.
We walked along the whole Fondamenta twice - a real nice thing to do. Don't miss out on the Ponte Chiodo on the very eastern end. One of the very last bridges over the canal without any railing. A smaller sight, but definitely an interesting and historical one. read more
