After one visit to the Olive Branch at the Promenade, I have been convinced that a fully Kosher supermarket is absolutely incredible! I was impressed with the products, the service, and the little things that make a location stick out. When visiting Toronto recently, my sister and I met our cousin at the Promenade for coffee. We then walked around the Promenade afterwards and came across Olive Branch. We walked inside and found ourselves spending quite a lot of time in there walking from one end of the supermarket to the other. We saw aisle after aisle of Kosher products along with a huge produce section and a large meat section and even a nice floral department. We even saw machines that would freshly cut pineapple in 15 seconds or make juice out of fruit instantly. For the days I do look for Kosher food and drinks at home, I wish we had an Olive Branch nearby. The Olive Branch is a 35,000 square food independent Kosher market in the heart of Thornhill at the Promenade Mall. it is designed to be more than just a place to shop but rather as an experience. In addition to the produce, butcher, and Kosher products, they also have a fresh deli, bakery, fish, and sushi. It is a place that emphasizes community and togetherness. They have party platters for every occasion. The hours are 8 AM to 10 PM from Monday through Wednesday, 8 AM to 11 PM on Thursday, 7 AM to one hour before sunset on Friday, and 8 AM to 8 PM on Sunday. They are closed on Saturday. Have you heard of Asian Cosco?!…read more We hadn't and curiosity got the better of us. This is an Asian distributor that's taken the moniker and knocked off a letter from the name. It's quite popular inside although the selection is small compared to the overall warehouse size. Many of the Asian snacks, drinks and other food items seemed to be only a few bucks less than the normal grocery store prices during sales. We checked the best before dates carefully before deciding whether to make a buy which we ultimately didn't. Skip it or hit it? Despite the popularity, we won't be back to support in spite of the intrigue.

I stopped by mostly because of the name and ended up picking up a bag of Chinese Lay's in cucumber flavor, which turned out to be really good. I was early and decided to drop by this store. It was windy and spitting rain. I parked fairly close to the entrance at around 7:30 pm and walked in. It still has a bright, clean vibe to the store. I checked out the top floor. There are still cooking classes happening and the washrooms are there. You can either take the stairs up or use the elevator. This store is still massive. I like browsing the Joe Fresh clothes and seeing what's trendy, because I am not... haha! There were a decent number of reduced items, such as pajamas and sweaters. I enjoyed looking at the nail polish brands and varieties. It's cheaper buying your nail polish here than at a drug store. Naturally, I looked at the snacks. I love the cookie section so much that it was tough getting me out of it. I need to try more of the fancy creme-filled cookies. I pass by this store when I head home from work. I also like earning Scene+ points when I get groceries. I came here after seeing a Saturday matinee movie at the Cineplex SilverCity in Richmond Hill. Normally, I got to the FreshCo in Richmond Hill. Instead, I wanted something different and visited this grocery store for the first time. It was a ten-minute drive over, which was fine. There was plenty of parking. I backed into a spot. I heard a motor running the entire time that I was near my car. It was powering an amp that a man had for his violin. He was playing songs and busking in the parking lot. More on that later. I like Sobey's. Markham doesn't have one. This FreshCo does have that Sobey's feel. Aisles are wider. It is spacious and clean. I came to get fruit. The strawberries from Mexico looked ripe and yummy. I also got a bag of gala apples. I needed celery. The selection wasn't as pristine, but I did get what I needed. It didn't look horrible. What's special about this store is a massive kosher foods section. It was impressive, with fridges everywhere. I was here for paratha. It was on sale. I was happy. Naturally, I picked up Dare cookies. I nabbed the last box of coconut. I also got a box of Celebration raspberry truffle cookies. I was excited to see Coke orange cream here. It was in regular and zero sugar. Yes! I got a case of twelve zero sugar. I like that each FreshCo store is different. This one had empanadas, crepes, and pancakes. They were all in the frozen food section. I got a package of beef empanadas. I am looking forward to trying them. I got a nice female staffer at the checkout. She scanned my Scene+ barcode off my phone. I paid with a credit card. I tapped and all was good. I loaded my groceries in my reusable Longo's bag (there's a Longo's across the street that I've been to and liked), thanked the woman, and left. I put away my groceries in my car, found a loonie, and added it to the violin guy's tip jar. He had a sign saying that he was supporting five kids. It was windy and I appreciated the effort. His playing was flat at times during Hallelujah. I felt like I was being harsh. He was in front of a grocery store. Thank goodness that I caught each of these charges. I went back to the store, my time, my gas to get a full refund as I should. The way I was handled was that is was a common occurance and oh well. Well it is a BIGGGGGGG CONCERN and that is why I am writing this review PLEASE PLEASE CHECK YOUR RECIEPTS THERE IS A PATTERN HERE AND YOU DON'T WANT TO BE A SOBEYS VICTIM.

It's mostly focused on Chinese ingredients, but they have enough items for Korean and Japanese that you can get by with in a pinch. They also seem to have separate mini boutiques for assorted tchotchkes and beauty products which I didn't investigate. The store looked pretty new and very clean. They also had an impressive array of hot and cold foods to-go that looked quite good, although I didn't try any. If I have any complaint, it is the fact that most of the vegetables are prepackaged in miles of plastic wrap and styrofoam... it is shocking to see. But aside from that, I'd have to say this beats the T&T by a good margin, and I am a T&T devotee from when they opened their first store in Burnaby in the early 90's!

I went back few days later to grab some food for dinner. I got some items from the buffet, dim sum, order of fried shrimp tempura and kimchi. Skip the kimchi, the dim sum was decent and the food from the buffet was worth it. Check out moves quickly, the staff behind the buffet were very helpful. Make sure to bring your own bag.
