Having grown up…read morein the Serbian churches in Chicago, I wasn't sure if this little church in Prescott would be the same as what I grew up with. Within the first five minutes of the service starting, from the first "Amen" sung by the choir, I was immediately transported back to my childhood days in the Serbian churches. Although the services are in English, everything else is the same. Familiar and like home. Many changes have taken place at St. George over the last nine years and there has been much growth. But the people of this church are as welcoming to newcomers now as they were to me all those years ago. Even if you go away for a time and come back, you are always welcomed like family. If you happen to live in Prescott, are moving to Prescott or just passing through and are looking for a genuine experience with Christ, this little church off the Square is the place to go. Oh, and there is real food at coffee hour, not just coffee and doughnuts.

If you are looking for a church close in town I would suggest you visit this church. It might be a good fit if you are looking for something fairly traditional yet have a contemporary styled service. They have multi-media screens as well so you don't have to fumble through a hymnal. They have been on a growth curve for the past 3-4 years and now have 3 services. I believe they are Sundays 9, 10:30 and 4:30 pm. Come early or you will likely have to park out on the street. Seating is a bit full for the 10:30 service. They are friendly and upbeat. Expect to be greeted by a number of friendly faces. The senior pastor, John Dickerson, is young, sharp and focused. His sermons are easy to follow and to the point. He provides a fill in the blank outline to help you follow along and take notes. He also shares the pulpit with other pastors so you will get a good variety of teaching. They have just added a new pastor to the staff as well. They have a vibrant children's ministry as well as adult Sunday school and a variety of other Bible studies and ministry activities throughout the week. Praise the Lord.

They have beautiful stained glass with some holy icons and paintings. The parish is named after St. Germaine Cousin - Patron Saint of victims of child abuse. If you don't understand the language, you can see the art. If you don't understand the liturgy yet, you can feel the music. I truly adore the art and music found in the Catholic Church. The Christian tradition I was raised in didn't place much value on art in the sanctuary, though they had good music. The prayer garden they have to the left of the office is gorgeous! It's not huge, but they have some fantastic murals depicting key events in Salvation history. You might not think much about prayer gardens until you've had some tough times in life, and grow to appreciate the simpler things of life. Finding a place to commune with nature and clear your mind of the, "world's rat race", has become part of my Christian walk. When I was younger, I was always rushing to the next career level, education level, and accomplishment level. Nowadays, I find the time to enjoy things for what they are; appreciating the simple things. I like to splurge, but now I have a richer faith life which magnifies everything - people, places and things. It's like the colors are sharper, the day and night are more contrasted, and the good times are better. I can't explain it - perhaps that's why I love taking photos. Photos allow me to share my thoughts in both more detail and in a humbler way. All right grasshopper - enough "mystical thought." I sent my two sons (ages 10 and 8) to Camp Yavapines for the first time this summer, and sadly, it…read morewill be our last. My 10-year-old came home completely distraught, hugging us and in tears. After hours of silence on the drive home (we are military and live in Tucson), he finally broke down and told us he had been bullied throughout the week--verbally and physically--by another child in his cabin. He described having his feet stomped on, having his clothes/hair pulled on, elbowed in the head and side, tripped, and made to feel completely unsafe by this child. The most disappointing part? His counselor, Samisoni, brushed it off. When my son bravely spoke up about his discomfort, Samisoni told him he had a "squeaky voice" and to "talk amongst themselves" to resolve it. There was zero communication to us from the camp staff--no calls, no emails, not a single word about any issues--until we found out through our son. We trusted this camp with our children's safety and emotional well-being, and they failed miserably. My ex-husband, who grew up attending Camp Yavapines himself and has been urging me for years to send our kids, was devastated by what happened. This is not the experience any child should have to endure. Our younger son (8) had a slightly better time but told us he witnessed his big brother upset and crying more than once. He said he wouldn't want to go back either due to this. This was our first experience with Camp Yavapines--and it will absolutely be our last.
