In April of 2023, I received the unfortunate news that my 11.5 year old, Bruno, had a nasal tumor…read morethat was expanding pretty aggressively. His quality of life was starting to slip slightly and on his bad days or nights, he'd have some pretty significant 'bleeding from the nose' episodes. Once the specialists diagnosed the issue, and told me that it would be be wise to 'make arrangements' for him, I scoured the internet for a compassionate, experienced, person who would come to the house and make his passing as painless and pleasant for him, as possible. I'm so fortunate that I stumbled across Dr. LaVergne. Her compassion and commitment for her job are evident from the moment we first interacted via email and phone. She was willing to move mountains in her own schedule if I said that Bruno was deteriorating rapidly (which fortunately was not the case, so we scheduled 3-4 days out, but her willingness to broach the topic speaks volumes to the kind of person and professional that she is). We set an appointment for May 1 and she gave me ideas on how to spend our last few days together, as well as the types of food that Bruno might enjoy while she put him to sleep. I could share a pretty extensive play-by-play of how the hour went--but I'll spare everyone the details, and maybe save myself a few tissues in the process too! Dr LaVergne is a very special person. If you are at the juncture where you've got to make this very difficult decision, do yourself a favor and choose Dr LaVergne. The days leading up to Bruno's passing were brutal, but I will always look back on his actual passing as such a peaceful, spiritual experience--thanks in large part to Dr LaVergne. Bruno was a special pup--most folks assured me after he passed that he was so lucky, because "you gave him such a great life"--ironically, the opposite was true. I was definitely the lucky one.

I was determined to act as usual so the dogs would not sense anything to upset them, hoping the veterinarian in charge of euthanasia thought the same way. Dr LaVergne met my expectations and beyond. She was so kind and gentle that after greeting her, Sammy and Baron lay down and dozed while we talked. She spent time talking with me and made sure I was ready before proceeding with the medication. In a few minutes, they peacefully stopped breathing. She spent time afterwards also. Nothing felt rushed. I had called a few of the pet "hospice" companies but the appointments are made at a main office somewhere... You will not meet or talk to the vet until they arrive, etc. On the other hand, Dr Lavergne is accessible by phone and text. In addition she has certifications beyond the standard CAETA (Companion Animal Euthanasia Training Academy) which speaks of her dedication and professionalism. I am so grateful to her and Pet Passages Crematory services which I will review separately.

If I could give 10 stars, I would. This is the service that no one wants, but also no one knows…read morethey need. Last week, we got a terminal diagnosis on my 16 year, 8 month old best friend. I knew immediately that he deserved to pass in his home, on his bed surrounded by the people he loves the most. This afternoon, Lap of Love Veterinary Hospice came to the house and Dr. Will helped us through the process. Eli transitioned to the next stage at 2:30pm in the most peaceful of ways, surrounded by an enormous amount of love, lots of kisses and in my arms with my husband petting him the whole time. I can't say enough about the entire process. The phone staff is incredible, caring, comforting and patient. The follow up emails are just the right amount of info when you're overwhelmed. They also have anticipatory and post-loss group support and I've joined 2 and plan to join 1 per week until I can cope on my own. It's a free service that is immensely helpful as you battle with when and why. I don't understand how these hospice vets can do their jobs, but they are angels on earth and I give Dr. Will so.many.hugs and accolades. He was informative, NEVER time pressured me and handled everything with such compassion and dignity. My biggest concern was that I was doing it too soon and o was pleased that he literally addressed every concern and evaluated my pup's issues before giving any advice. He never pressured me, but talked me through everything. In the end, it was my call and I was given all the time I needed. My ONLY complaint is that I wish I could take my other animals to Dr. Will on a regular basis. He is my kind of doctor. Hard decision. Terrible need, but I can't recommend enough.

More worried about collecting $80 Here's the full story of Reese's end of life today. For a year I've been concerned about her pain and didn't want her suffering. Her Veterinarian was certain it was arthritis and could be managed. 6 months + of monthly injections and adding 2 more pain killers over that time nothing seemed to improve. Today was her arthritis injection appointment and having physically carried her in and outdoors the last 2 days to potty I called ahead and notified them it was time to end her suffering. A different Veterinarian in the practice saw her this morning and decided it her legs were "very bad and most likely advanced cancer" and was certainly the best decision. Heres what hurts, month after month after month of $200 vet technician appointments for arthritis treatments that apparently gave her no relief. The money isn't the issue as much as her extended suffering is if the diagnoses was that off. So, im sitting on the floor, my back against the public hall door of the examination room, her head in my lap. The Doc had given her a light sedative to relieve her anxiety so they could insert an IV needle and left the room saying she'd get sleepy in anout 10 mins. So im speaking softly to her rubber her ears, saying my goodbye's. This is her last 10 mins of knowing me, a time to be at peace and say goodbyes. Suddenly the door hits me in the back, its the front desk cashier. She says to me through the crack in the door, Mr Osward its gonna be 80 dollars today can i get your credit card or check if your using one and ill ring you up? "Are you serious I responded. I'm on the floor tears running down my face, my dogs head in my lap, her last moments of consciousness on earth, my last moments to console and comfort her and they interrupt it to get paid for a service they havent even performed yet...she hasnt even been put to sleep yet. I tossed a credit card through the crack in the door telling her to charge what she wanted. So thats the last few minutes with Reeses and the memory im probably stuck with. Not the peaceful sorrowful last few minutes i wished for either of us. 16 yrs, 3 generations of dogs, this is NOT Dr. Charles Hewitts Westside Veterinary Clinic in any form now.
