    Ramen ordering counter

Another temple of beer worship in Melbourne's inner North. It has the same owners as the Terminus in North Fitzroy (another beer Mecca). I used to live round the corner from here but this opened after I moved (damn them!). OK, there's 52 (yes 52) craft beer taps, gorgeous pizzas and now they are doing Ramen too although these were not available at 3pm during my visit. They serve food until very late which has saved me in the past. The venue itself is large beer hall style, it has a cool, small stage for bands, a pool table and a smoking area that looks over Smith and Gertrude streets, a great spot on a Saturday arvo (if there's no smokers around!). Only negative I have is that it's a little too 'atmospheric' inside (read a bit too dark).

If you're still suffering from Mondayitis on a Tuesday, head over to Forresters for a good pick-me-up. They offer free craft beer tastings on Tues nights from around 6-7pm and if you're a novice like me, you'll find it really insightful, and its really great to hear people chat about a topic they are so passionate about. I ordered a serving of chilli fries (coz its better not to drink on an empty stomach!) and WOWzers, it tantalized my tastebuds, why haven't I ever come across this before in Melbourne?! I need to make the trip back JUST for the chilli fries. And beer of course. But mainly for the chilli topping. Yum. Yum. So yum. Venue is top notch too. Spacious pub, high ceilings, small mezzanine level on either side where you can sit and be away from the crowds.

I have to say that everytime I land up on Smith Street I seem to find another bar. It seems as if everytime I feel that I have visited every bar down here another four appear to make my quest have a a drink at every bar in Melbourne a nigh impossibility. Mind you, that is probably a good thing because it means that I can continue to visit an area and always find something new. Anyway, this place was good, but the problem was that there wasn't anything about thing place that made it stand out from all the othe offerings (especially when you have Pixel Alley across the road). However I didn't mind it, and the atmosphere was pretty cool. They have a Japanese restaurant at the front (though I suspect it is a separate business), and the main bar area is pretty cool. They have a couple of pool tables and some decent beers on tap, but nothing all that fantastic. Even though I liked it, I probably wouldn't go out of my way to come here again.

Nice venue with friendly staff and an extensive craft beer selection. Sunday was nice and chilled and there was free ping pong set up.

Goodbye Der Raum... hello Bar Economico!…read more Gone are the days of $20+ cocktails that take almost as much time to make as an episode of Friends. Instead, Matthew Bax has opened a cheap, cheerful, tongue-in-cheek dive bar where everything is bought with pre-paid tickets and you're made to feel like you're drinking in some third world country. Visit the "managers" booth at the back and buy a collection of tickets at $5 each. They're only valid for the night you're there, so don't go crazy until you know you're in for a serious session. With shots and beer starting at 1 ticket (that's $5 people!) all the way up to 4 tickets for the super boozie Zombie cocktails, there's something priced for everyone. The most popular cocktails seem to be those around the $10 mark. They're quick to be made, with a lot of the booze pre-mixed in bottles and then built in a plastic up filled with ice. While the focus is on affordable booze, the quality is certainly not dropped. Drinks are garnished properly and the liquor is of a good quality. Service is chatty and efficient and luckily they're safely held behind the bar "cage" because some of those bartenders are smokin' hot and I imagine the ladies might get out of control. The ambiance? I felt like I was participating in an art installation rather than experiencing a bar. Is this a good thing? Maybe not for every night of the week but if you're after something fun and different then give it a whirl. The music is crazy electro-jazz-swingy and keeps the spirits high. The crowd is cool, arty and hipster-y.

Either way, it has such potential but I just didn't experience the potential greatness when I went in one quite Saturday night. They operate off a ticket system with one ticket equalling $5.50, which is really cool, if they actually utilised this system, however they didn't & from what I hear they don't often, which kind of ruins the whole vibe as the drinks lists don't actually tell you what is in the drinks nor the prices, just how many tickets each drink is worth. It is a very small area with tables randomly placed around & you have to stand in awkward areas such as in front of the bathroom entrance or hover around the bar with no stools for you to sit on. I will for sure go back & give it another shot because I wouldn't say I don't like the place, maybe it was just a bad night? Not sure, my cocktail was nice & I really want to be cool enough to go there haha.

However I don't mind the place, it just seems to be a little more classier than what I tend to like. They do have quite a nice beer garden, as well as some decent beers on tap, but I tend to walk past this one to the two pubs that happen to have rooftop decks that happen to be on the other side of the railway line. Sure, it does seem to be quite popular, and there have been times that the place has been absolutely packed, and I don't actually mind it all that much, however the atmosphere, and the fact that there are better places in the vicinity mean that I usually give this place a miss.

On the one occasion we were here, our friend knew the doormen and we were let in. The bar/pub itself is quite a big area decked out with plasma TVs and quite snazzy decor. The courtyard area is pretty nice and a great spot to get some air. We were there on a Friday night and there was a cover band playing. Although they were pretty cheesy and played even cheesier tunes, I have to admit it was pretty fun. It's not really my scene if I'm honest but good times were had all the same.

It's one of our 'footy pubs' that me and my mates frequent before and after games - a 10 min walk to the MCG seemingly scaring off the bogan throngs that must filter in places closer to the ground. Staff is always friendly and welcoming, it's vibrant without being too busy, and the pub grub has never let me down yet. Ideally they would add a few more taps and beer variety, or at least rotate more frequently to mix things up, but it's a small complaint. Yet to partake in a trivia night yet but one started up around us recently and it looked like good fun that we'll likely come back to try. Note: I have extreme bias as have been lucky enough to celebrate several of my team's Grand Final victories here, so The Prince Pat will always have a special place in my heart for that alone!
