Comfortable, quiet and peaceful hotel with terrific Cuisine…read more We spent three nights here in September. We enjoyed it a lot and would definitely go back. Don't be put off by the approach to the hotel (they seem to be touchy about not calling it an "auberge" even though that is in its name). The suburban neighborhood surrounds the hotel and it's hard to imagine what it will be like inside as you pull into a small driveway with an unassuming entrance where the signage is a bit downscale. But once you are inside, it's another story. You can get a room in the main house or a room in the cottages. We stayed in the cottages and are glad we did - they are more private, and have a patio to sit outside and read and have a drink. They are also a bit bigger. We had a small suite. There was even an espresso machine in the room. The bathrooms are excellent and modern and spacious. The linens are high quality and feel good to the touch. Some of the rooms have a Provençal theme - ask for one of those if you want that. The staff is terrific. They are very friendly and service-oriented. They will help you plan your day if you ask. They are multi lingual. They will attend to special requests or needs. The restaurant is outstanding and is the highlight of the experience. The chef is an artist. I think his name is Mr. Boucher. We took the gastronomic package for two of the nights and are glad we did. It is first class cuisine and service in a beautiful dining room that is comfortable and warm, but elegant. The staff here were plentiful in number and very obliging and attentive. The chef prepares excellent modern cuisine, and the choices are limited - which we liked since they were great choices and the chef puts a lot into each course. Between courses they offer a cheese tray with thirty five cheeses, many local ones. It's all part of a prix-fixe which is decently priced for the level of the cuisine. The spa is not much to get excited about, especially if you've been to nice spas. It feels very dated and worn around the edges. They say they will be doing some renovations soon. Until then, you'll have an indoor pool and a jacuzzi, some dim lights and a shower with a fancy name (chromotherapy) that weirdly changes colors and irritatingly shuts off every 20 seconds. And there is no relaxation room, or tea served, or soft music. The outdoor pool area is very nice, though the season is short. The grounds are pleasant and well-planted. The nice thing about this place is that it is family-owned, not a corporate venue. Actually there are three couples who own it and they all seem to work there including the chef. So you won't have the feeling of a high-powered spa hotel, but more of a personal and intimate experience that feels very authentic.

The three of us shared a room with two double beds, which was a little tight, but OK. Their WiFi is the kind you have to log on through a browser so you have to renew your connection all the time which is pretty annoying, and our bathroom had a weird shower design that made the already small shower even more awkward. But those were really only my two major complaints. The upsides were that it was clean and comfortable, really close to the train station, served a nice continental breakfast and the owners were really very friendly and helpful. In the overall scheme of things, I'd have to say I'm a fan! STEPH JUDGEMENT: Charming with great service and location, but has its quirks.

The bed was comfortable, the dimly lit rooms created a relaxing and sexy ambiance, and there were numerous pieces of furniture that I reaaally wanted to ship home. It was also very clean and all the staff was friendly and helpful. I also got an AMAZINGly good deal and paid less than I have at strategically located but outdated Best Westerns in the U.S. This hotel might not be considered "central," but being so close to Plaça d'Espanya, the hop on hop off bus was easily accessible. Taxis are also far cheaper in Spain than they are in France, Italy, and England.. so we used them frequently while in Spain. NOTE: This hotel is now known as the Pestana Arena.

Nice, modern, clean hotel just outside the walls of Avignon. Nice pool. Comfortable bed. Some rooms have fantastic bathrooms with bathtubs fit for a soak. A short walk to the main strip in Avignon. That being said, this place is a hot mess. Wifi: yes, its free- but its one of those wifis that never actually allows you to connect to the internet. None of my 3 devices could connect to the internet even after the extremely painful login process. The wifi repeatedly was dropped. I finally gave up. Ridiculously loud disco party: When I checked in, there was a summer party for locals- a paid event that closed the pool off to guests for the entire day/night and simultaneously filled the entire hotel and my room with painfully loud ( too loud to watch tv) and pulsing disco music while the locals cavorted with lights and projections in the pool area. After 7 hours, i called the front desk: The phone was broken in my room. So after complaining about the music, And having to go to the front desk and scream above the music, i had to repack my bags and move rooms. They were nice and helpful about this. But it sucked. I slept well in a much smaller room off the pool- no problems. Breakfast: awesome buffet. Breakfast was not included in my rate, but since NO ONE even spoke to me during my long meal, I just gave up and did not get charged. Housekeeping: guess what! No one made up my room while I was out romping for the day, but they did greet me by name when I reentered the hotel. Pillows are very uncomfortable and it's hard to have a good night sleep using existing one. Hotel food is not good and stay away. The are so many great choices near by. P.S. The more we stay in Southern France and enjoy excellent food choices, the more we realize how bad was the food and restaurant service in Novotel.
