The Food Emporium is a lovely little delicatessen in Pudsey. It has a lovely enticing shop front,…read morenot to mention, a decent name, which is something I feel to be important. It sells local produce, with cheeses (though try not to be put off by the tub of Philly in the lit counter-bar), but what's more is that there is a vat of homemade jam behind the counter. I think that there is a real lack of delis in Leeds that sells its own home-made products, so The Food Emporium really gets a thumbs up from me.

They sell all kinds of delicious deli delights, the things you might expect, but nothing you can imagine will compare to actually purchasing a beautiful sandwich of theirs! They sell some lovely cheeses, they are *purveyors* of European bread (yum!), they sell continental meats, speciality home made sandwiches and offer a great sit in experience if you want a delicious tea or coffee. It really is one of those 'must visit' places in Pudsey, which has it's mix of good indie and bad indie haunts. This one is definitely on the plus side, down to earth and delightful.

The gigantic counter displays a myriad of delicious cheeses, hams, olives, pates, anti-pasti and salads whilst the nearby baskets display fresh sticks and loaves of bread. To top it off, they have dozens of wooden shelves groaning with all kinds of lovely store cupboard treats from organic granola, cereals and cookies to oat cakes, chutneys, olive oils, vinegars, sauces and spices. Nothing complicated - in the end, I ordered a Greek salad and a plate of Serrano ham rather than the pricier mains on the blackboards. I'm not sure how two really basic things could be so disappointing. I think it's because on the surface, this looks like a place that prides itself on sourcing and attention to detail. On the specials during my visit were such items as hand foraged local samphire, Cumbrian lamb and Pink's award winning sausages. So why was the Greek salad about 50% raw onion? Why did it feature those mealy crunchy supermarket basics tomatoes, cold from the fridge? Even the black olives mentioned on the menu were green. And they clearly did have black olives in the kitchen, because my four slices of Serrano ham (almost £6) came topped with a single olive. They boasted it was "20 month aged" - most of it had clearly been in their fridge, as it featured a faint tang of refrigerator and managed to be unpleasantly rubbery. Not sure how Serrano ham can even go rubbery but there you go. If you've boasting of excellent ingredients then it's unacceptable for the basics to fail so badly. I wouldn't bother returning.

There's lots to look at and a nice outdoor eating area where on Saturday morning they were cooking up several varieties of sausage, plus lamb burger. I had a delicious bratwurst and was particularly delighted by the wide range of condiments. Excited already for my next visit!

If there is something that takes your fancy or you just need a hand choosing your latest and greatest cheese board. It's not the biggest shop in the world but sometimes good things come in small packages. Prices are middle of the road to high but you get what you pay for. It's always nice to get some good cheese and this is a great place to fulfil that need.

In particular, I would recommend the fresh bread from here and also the icecream (although not together), the quality of the bread and icecream is exceptionally high.

The desert I went for was something with an Italian name which I could barely pronounce so I'm hardly going to try and spell it now, but suffice it to say it was an amazing blend of meringue, amaretti biscuits and Nutella. We didn't sample the cafe but it was doing brisk business on a Saturday lunchtime and lots of the people were clearly regulars. The standout feature of our visit had to be the staff. Even though we were only getting a very small order, they incredibly attentive - taking time to explain the options, asking how we wanted things packing, offering to tweak the temperature of the calzone better to our suiting.

Boasting locally sourced food and home baked cakes, scones & tray bakes, it was a fair bet that I was going to like the place, and I wasn't disappointed. I was greeted warmly when I came in, I ordered tea and a toasted teacake and was invited to take a seat. There are 8 tables with 3-4 seats at each, so a decent amount of space. It's completely open plan so you can see the food prep & cooking area, I watched the two chefs chopping veg and putting in a big pot on the stove, and preparing the pastry cases for some kind of quiche or flan, and the smells were just delicious! My tea arrived in a teapot with a separate pot of milk, which always makes me happy as I'm dead fussy about my brew. My teacake was large and generously buttered which, again, pushed my happiness buttons. As I supped I eyed the scrummy looking cakes and tray bakes under the glass domes, slightly gutted that I didn't have time to indulge today. Perusing the menu it looks full of delights, from breakfast staples with a local emphasis (like the griddled dry cured yorkshire bacon sandwich, or the local pork sausage sandwich) to paninis, jacket potatoes, wraps, soups and much more. The loss of one star comes purely from a pricing front. £4.20 for a bacon sandwich or £6.80 for a panini is just a touch over the limits for me. Perhaps that's a little unfair as you can clearly see (literally!) the care and attention that goes into preparing the food. Who knows, perhaps when I come back and eat more, and I definitely will be back, I might eat them and decide the quality justifies it, but until then, four stars it is.
