This area has one of the largest fall raptor migrations in the West and the students do raptor catch, banding and release. They also do net catch, banding and release of songbirds. GETTING THERE: The trickiest part. Be sure to look at directions page on the web site. It was a treacherous drive along deep ruts in some parts. One of the guys in the car is the most expert driver I know and even he was concerned. Hopefully the repairs have helped. But plan on a four wheel drive vehicle and slow going! I understand the program offers rides at some times to a few people. Contact them for details. No H2O or LOO: There is no water. You'll need to bring your own. You'll also want to know that there is no Loo but for one pit toilet downhill of the site. IT'S COLDER AT ELEVATION: Lucky Peak elevation is high and you'll want to hang out for a while (be sure to stay for the raptor catch and release) so a jacket is a good idea. MORE OR FEWER PEOPLE: The four adults in our party thought a September Sunday early morning would be a good time to go to avoid crowds. HA! There was a grade school group with parents and teacher in tow that had camped there overnight (a brave lot, remember no water or bathrooms in the mix) and so there were a lot of people present to enjoy the setting, the birds and the grad students as they answered eager questions. If you want to plan a daytime field trip for a group or an overnight stay, you'll need to use the contact info on this Yelp page or at their web page to schedule with them. DATA COLLECTION: While we might advise a weekday excursion when the kids are in school if you're looking for connecting with the quiet Zen of the location, the kids were part of the fun as they were eager to hold and release the birds after the grad students took the ones they caught to weigh them, tag them and record them in the paper record keeping book. That was fun in itself, in this day of automated everything, to see scientists like these grad students keeping uber-detailed paper records. They use the data to identify migration routes, wintering areas, breeding areas, and mortality factors. HANDS-ON: I took the opportunity to release some of the smaller songbirds from my palm when offered the chance to do that. I passed on the chance to hold and release a raptor given absence of raptor gloves to wear to handle him or her. (Those talons are sharp!) But my friend was brave enough to do this and she described the experience of releasing that magnificent bird truly awe inspiring. ACCESSIBILITY: This location is more accessible to people with limited mobility than one might expect it to be. The surfaces at the site are relatively hard packed and the slopes between accessible entry parking and the bird activity site are doable with help. I have MS so had first hand experience with using same. I think wheelchair users might find it doable too. However, the Loo is not accessible. The raptor catch and release site was not walkable for me up a steep slope. They suggested I drive up, although vehicles are not typically allowed at the raptor ridge, to be able to participate like everyone else. Lovely! PARKING: Parking is outside a locked gate near the Loo. Park there and walk up. For people needing accessible parking or for those in pre-approved overnight groups, contact them in advance and they'll tell you the protocol to have the gate unlocked so you can drive up and park closer.

The Huntington Learning Center that I attended ended up helping me get to a 32 on the ACT (33…read moresuperscore). I started out with a reasonable score, and through the flexible learning system I was put into, I can confidently say that the Huntington Learning center caused the majority of my improvement. More specifically, the tutors Roy and Dylan were my catalysts of knowledge. Roy was right by my side the whole way. Whenever I needed help--even with questions that I thought would sound stupid--he took them with languid anticipation. Being tutored by Roy was successful because we would laugh and talk about our histories while studying. Rather than coming to Huntington for dreary, mind-numbing, cathartic cramming sessions, he made the process one I wouldn't mind repeating. Not only that, but he managed to make the material interesting so that I was constantly involved. To say that Dylan was my ACT tutor does not give him justice. Somehow he managed to become a pivotal figure within my life, mentor, and role-model. On top of that, he caused me to learn an abundance of material for the ACT without even letting me know he was doing so. I was going through some rough stuff when I was being tutored, and Dylan gave me a great deal of life advice. Perhaps most importantly, he encouraged me to keep writing in my free time, ultimately fostering my love for English. I originally became interested in Sage because my daughter left 6th grade at Christine Donnell School of the Arts (a charter school in Meridian Joint District 2) and entered Lake Hazel Middle School as a 7th grader. Lake Hazel is so overcrowded that I felt that the curriculum wasn't being taught very efficiently - my daughter wasn't being challenged. In addition to that issue, the overcrowding was obnoxious to the point of severe frustration and anger. (But that's a whole different review). So, Sage attracted my attention because of the small class sizes and challenging curriculum. It has been wonderful! Sage is a school where a student can really push his or herself. My daughter is in 8th grade, but most of her classes are combined with 9th graders, and she's in 10th grade advance math. Not to brag, but it's nice to have the option of moving ahead if you're smart enough. By staying challenged and pushing herself, I know that she's not getting into trouble. In addition, Sage doesn't have a gym. instead they go out into the community for Urban PE. The also don't have a library, but instead take walking field trips as often as needed to the city library (conveniently located in their neighborhood). This has helped my somewhat shy daughter become more comfortable in an urban (yes, I know it's not Seattle or LA) environment. I did take off one star because they don't offer traditional sports programs. My daughter plays soccer and runs cross country, but Sage doesn't get out until after 4pm (they have longer hours, but then no school on Friday's). Because of their longer hours, my daughter can't even participate in sports at another school - she can't get there early enough for practices or games/meets. There are work arounds of course. She has been able to play soccer in a community league and Sage has implemented a lunch time running club. I also took off a star because Sage only offers French. I feel like the reality is that we live in a country where a huge percentage of the population speaks Spanish and it should at least be an option. The work around has been to take Spanish during school hours with the IDLA system. It's not ideal. She is an advanced Spanish student and was forced to take beginning Spanish this year, as you have to start IDLA at the beginning, but at least its something. Sage also has an Elementary/Middle school. It's at a different location, on Parkcenter Blvd. They just opened the new campus this years, having taken over the old Parkcenter Mall location.
