I was not originally planning to go here, but always leave a spot in travels to just "randomly ramble" somewhere, and this was it! The old fort site has a marina and some signage, but it was brutal hot, so I wandered up to the Kentucky River Museum and stumbled right into a fascinating tour! The guide's family has operated the lock (Lock 10 to be specific) since practically conception, so he had stories, pictures, letters, journals, and a deep connection to the home and site. Awesome tour! This tour is included with your purchase of a fort ticket, so I headed over there to get mine and wander around the replica fort complete with cabins, crows, period demonstrations, and a video about the one and only Daniel Boone! There's a lot of stuff going on at this park. A recreated wooden stockade houses historical exhibition. A campground welcomes RV's. A boat ramp allows river access. And there are extensive picnic and day recreation areas. It tends to be muggy down here, and while it's classic Kentucky it isn't the most scenic area you'll see. Also note that the road going through the park keeps going south with very little opportunity to stop or turn around if you miss the park, which results in a scenic but very rural drive, so make sure you don't miss your turn. read more

This is a piece of American history. In April of 1775 Daniel Boone and his men reached the KY river and established Kentucky's second settlement known as Fort Boonesborough. The site has been reconstructed as a working fort. They have settlement cabins and demonstrations and campgrounds. This place is amazing and definitely WORTH coming to see it -- even on a hot, summer day! The buildings all have air conditioning in the summer and I'm sure heating in the winter. There are certain buildings that have interpreters in them that talk about what is in each particular building, like the cloth/rug maker building. There is a lady in the cloth/rug building that talks about making clothing and rugs inside that particular building. read more

It's sad to see that the park attractions are no longer being open. The pool area and museum are closed and appear to be in bad disrepair. Perhaps, partly due to the pandemic. I hope they come back. The camping area is still open. And the park restrooms are open. The fields are being mowed. It's still a great place, but I remember when this place was hopping. read more

Nice quite and spacious campground even when full for Memorial Day Weekend. We stayed and extra day after the holiday what a pleasant trip.

This is a very nice State Park to not only visit but, to stay in the campground. They have level sites with full hookups and you can reserve ahead on the web site. We enjoyed our weekend there and spent time hiking around and visiting the historic Fort Boonesborough. Usually on the weekends in the summer they have folks dressed in period costume using the different areas to make candles, spin wool, gunsmith, etc. There are some artifacts on display and there is also a very nice gift shop. We've been coming here for years. My entire family are lovers of 18th century history and this park helped light the spark in my son. His first trip was when he was about 15 months old. The park is great during the season for the historical interpreters they have as well as the large events. Reenactments of battles, fort life, etc are always in the menu. The blacksmith shop is open and a great thing to watch. Weavers, gun makers, spinners, soap makers, candle makers, Longhunter a and more are on site. The Fort Boonesboro Foundation also has events in the off season such as the winter trade days. This fort has been around since the early 70s, but is kept in great repair. Though it's not built in the original site, it's fairly close. We've never stayed at the campgrounds or been to the main park around more than once. That was mainly to see the original location site. This is definitely a place to visit. Especially with kids. read more

I went one year to a haunted forest they had there and then again to a Christmas dinner and play and had a excellent time! The fort usually have demonstrations in the blacksmith shop and other buildings on site. The day we went was kind of slow. It is worth a look. It won't take you long to go through it. Nice place to study, walk, or have a picnic as well. It even has a couple of playgrounds for the kids as well as a pool. read more

Somebody needs to educate the people that run and operate this place about how the Native Americans were there first and it was the European settlers that came into their territory. The first thing you do when you get there is watch a short video on the history of the area, which is neat. Get some background then explore. The video's production quality was up there with the Blair Witch Project. Poor quality video and audio with horrible shots and editing. But hey, kids don't care about that, so whatever. The major problem is that the whole video is ridiculous. A "fair trade" with the natives for their land to build a settlement? Maybe mention the native tribes had no concept of land ownership? Showing the murdering of the natives as OK and a proud moment for the colony to show that you're strong after raping the land and they want you gone is also not acceptable. Then when they fight back, it becomes their fault? I had a couple literal LOL moments at the complete hogwash this video was spewing until I realized they were serious. And that is extremely dangerous. If you take your children there, educate yourself first and give some background so you can explain some of the horrendous propaganda being peddled. The actual village part was OK. I've been to much better "pioneer villages" where they make candles and all that. This village also had an entire building devoted to guns. Yes important for the times, but not a hands-on type thing needed for any village reconstruction. Where were the people making broomsticks out of hay? Probably got kicked out by the gun wielding rednecks. Stupidly expensive for what it is, and even if it was free I would avoid this place like the plague. read more

I really enjoyed my visit to Fort Boonesborough. I felt like I was taking a walk back in time and that Ole Daniel himself would walk through the gates at anytime. I would suggest that visitors take in the short orientation film before beginning their self guided tour. While the fort is not original, it is a wonderful replica of the fort that was built in 1775. Staff in period dress are scattered about the fort offering demonstrations on candle making, blacksmithing, and life in a frontier fort. The fort is about 5-miles off of Interstate 75 and is adjacent to the Fort Boonesborough State Park. read more

My wife and I spent five nights in Ft. Boonesborough State Park. It is very well managed and kept up. Folks in the office and park hosts were very friendly. Very family friendly and found all campers to be welcoming and hospitable even though we were not from the area. Hope to go back again. read more

Had a day trip with my grandchildren they had fun. The blacksmith did such a great job explaining the role for our settlers. They got to see how much work it took to spin material to make clothes. The gift shop had candy sticks which was a big hit. It was spaced out and mask were worn. We packed snacks and walked at the park. Great educational fun read more

I haven't really experienced Fort Boonesborough thoroughly. I am giving it a favorable rating due to the fact that I can purchase lye soap there cheaply. $1.50 a bar. its over 6 at Cracker Barrel but the Cracker Barrel soap does have a much more pleasant smell. Its getting more and more difficult to find lye soap anymore. read more

Such a fantastic campground. The bathrooms are immaculate and the staff was wonderful. We decided to campout during one of the busiest weekends and everywhere was completely booked. However, Fort Boonesborough State Park has a designated area for tent camping, allowing you to pitch your tent wherever you'd like (within that given area). This makes camping during busy weekends super easy, because most campgrounds only have drive-in or back-in camping spots. read more

The campground was too crowded and way too noisy to even sleep at night. The gaggle camping across the street from me had noisy kids running all over the place all day. After the kids went to sleep, the adults were 10 times worse playing loud music,singing along with the music and yelling way past midnight. No respect for anyone around them! They started back up first thing in the morning which drove me and the neighbors camping next to me out of the park. Additionally, the campground is surrounded on 3 sides with roads and you can hear big trucks going by all night long. Not the place to go if you want peace and quiet. read more

Arrived Oct 15. Apparently it's been raining - a lot. Every site is a mud hole. Many users purchased straw bales to keep mud from covering everything in sight. Called ahead for reservations but they only take them online using ReserveAmerica.com but descriptions are misleading. Pull thru sites are not. Had to back in after dark with mud everywhere. Signs leading to campground are nonexistent, as are signs within the campground. Roads are two way and not wide enough for two RVs to pass without dropping outside wheels into the mud. None of the campsites have adequate parking for towed vehicle or towing vehicle so everyone parks IN THE MUD - and partially blocks the roads. We'll not be coming here again. read more

Who else remembers Boonesboro Beach? Yep, I do and I'm showing my age by saying that. The beach closed long ago and if you've ever driven across the Kentucky River, you know why. It's brown, murky and definitely nothing I would want to swim in anymore. I've probably been to this park 50 times in my life. From picnics, the pool, miniature golf, to the car show in the summer. My latest adventure was at the campground. Even though the forecast called for rain, pretty much the entire Independence Day weekend, the campground was fully booked to capacity. Needless to say, mud was everywhere. Many people had hay spread out all over their sites, to sop up the mud and water. Just like at the other KY State Park campgrounds, you can reserve online at Reserve America, but it's a $7.50 fee. If it's not during a peak weekend, you can check in at the front gate and then pick out your site. I never do the reservation, so I can't speak much on that end of it. We stayed at two different sites during the Forth of July weekend. Each site was completely different than the other. The first was #77 and it had a lot of green space and backed up to several other sites, not very private or close to a bathhouse. The second was #11 and it was a completely different atmosphere. Because it was directly across from the rec center and a different bathhouse, it was probably the most passed site in the entire place... I hated it. It was way too busy for me. I will say that camping between the two sites and seeing other prime located sites, made me realize that one area of the campground can be completely different from another area. Hot water was plentiful in both of the bathhouses that I went in. I witnessed someone mopping the bathroom floors two days in a row, so they were some of the cleanest bathrooms that I've witnessed in a campground. Oh, and there was a frog chillin' behind the bathroom stall. I will admit that I screamed, but no one came to my rescue. read more

Campground was great, except for the full hook up sites. These sites are right next to one of the many dump stations. This made it very hard to hook our trailer up so we could leave. Staff IS NOT friendly. Bought wood and ice from campground a couple of times and you would of thought we were stealing it. They dont give receipts to show you paid for wood or ice and we had people chasing us down to find out if we paid for items (which we DID). Park Ranger is also a gem. He watched us all weekend, confronted us about alcohol (we didnt have it in the public's view). read more

Wonderful place to go camping. We took a tent, a sleeping bag, and our happy selves. We stayed on a Friday evening, and left Saturday Morning. Wish we would have stayed the weekend, it was wonderful. Friendly staff. We didn't bring firewood from home-I read that it's a no-no for nature-they had some on sale at their little store. We just loved it. Wonderful space. They have a bathroom area with showers, and it was a life saver after I fell in the mud during our little baseball game. read more

Although this is a descent park as far as roads, facilities and space they do have a significant issue. They backed it up to a busy road with heavy truck traffic all night long. Exhaust brakes are used on a large hill almost constantly. No sleep unless you bring earplugs. Other issue is they put in asphalt pads but did not own a level apparently. Impossible to level even with blocks under our tires. All slope back or forward. If you want to hookup to water bring at least 100 feet of hose since there is water but not placed near the sites. Electric only. Dump station but no sewer hookups. Just poor design inside an otherwise beautiful park. I don't understand why non- campers design RV campgrounds. read more

What a cute little place. It has a beautiful scenery with trails, bar bq places, picnic areas and even a mini golf course. With a beautiful bridge over the river. It has a swimming pool that is full of people. Also it is located near the Kentucky river museum. It is a wonderful place for a quick getaway with the loved one, a trip with friends or even a family day out. read more

The campground was nice except the fact that unless you have an RV, you had no access to any of the water and you had to walk to the restrooms. The tent section was not very well organized. you just popped a tent anywhere. Nothing was marked. There was supposed to be trails and we never did find any of them. Again, unless you were part of the RV area, you were not included in any of the campsite activities. The cost to camp was a different amount than was on the website. There was a pool, but you had to pay extra for it, even though you were camping at the site and it closed at 6p.m. Couldn't fine the museum until Monday and we had free admission, but it's only open on Saturdays and Sundays. read more

The main attraction is the reconstructed Fort Boonesborough which was not yet open for the season. We were able to take a short trail from the campground to the fort and take exterior pictures. Bathrooms, showers and laundry were adequate if not pristinely clean. The staff were nice and the camp store had a good selection. We could not reach the water connection at our site so be aware the location of connections are not convenient on many sites. It rained while we were there and our campsite turned into a mud pit. Sites closer to the camp store were on higher ground. read more
