Fort Boonesborough State park is special and unique historically, culturally and aesthetically. The moment we stepped in the front door of this place I was swept with surprise and I felt as if I was in the middle of British Isles in KY, USA. I took History of British Isles last semester and everything I saw in Boonesborough park perfectly matches with what I learned in that class. Starting from the way they dress to the way of life in this park. From our tour, I realized that they used to live a simple life with no technologically developments. No wonder why they never had various disease. There was no food processing, no canning or frozen foods. They cook their daily meal in a ceramic pot. That in itself prevents the body from attack from foreign minerals. Women never wore pair of trousers. They were only wearing cotton woven, long, sleeved dresses. They used to cover their hair. Women were house bound, they cook, weave, grind grains and take care of children. Men on the other hand were hunters, fishers and fighters. So there was this line that separates their duties. History is the foundation of the future. So visit and learn history of Appalachia. You will learn an immense rich history of the region. I found it to be an amazing experience because it opened my eyes to reflect on various life styles of people in the past, how they protected themselves and how they left abundant heritage to the young generation today. Originally built in 1775, the historic fort is one of Kentucky's most important settlements for the American western frontier. Today, the original Fort Boonesborough no longer stands. But, a vivid image of the life of its people comes across through a very vibrant model that resembles the original fort's setting. One of the log houses displays the clothing of people at the time through the layout of the room and also through a guide that was fully dressed in the clothing of the time. The room also displays technology that, today, some might find impossible to image in the 1700s. One of these technologies is the "toester." The "toester" is a toaster made of iron compartments where one puts bread to toast. Placing the "toester" in front of a fire place, one uses one's toes to push the toaster from one side to the other--hence, they had "toesters." Another room actually shows how the Boonesborough people used to make wool. It was very neat. In short, Boonesborough, shows a life that we would consider impossible because of the lack of resources that we are used to today. But when you visit Boonesborough, you start to see that people did have resources, and they used them. I loved the place and loved the greenery that gave it a peaceful and beautiful character. Imagine going through a time machine and you land in 17th century Boonesborough, Kentucky. If this idea seems compelling or too farfetched for you, travel to Fort Bonesbrough museum to turn your imagination to reality. Fort Boonesborough is the epitome of 17century Boonsborough, Ky with accurate architecture, blacksmith techniques, and agriculture revitalization. The blast from the past will amaze you as you travel and live in a time where houses were made from logs, sheep's wool spun into yarn, and tools burned and bent into shape. My visit to the museum was phenomenal. The interpreters were pleasant and did not hesitate to share their knowledge on the times, trials, and history of Boonesborough, Ky. The colony was set up in a semi circle. Upon entering, the view is one that foreshadows an ease of access to the sections of the colony that were of my interest. The middle of the circle was the location of the blacksmith station, gunpowder magazine house, and garden. IN the garden, I was given the opportunity to plant some beans that are rarely planted in many gardens today. Each individual house along the semi circle allowed me to experience a different aspect of the colony such as soap making, threading making, and a social gathering space. The historic value of this location is phenomenal and lets me turn the pages of my text book into an hands on learning experience. read more

The entrance itself was welcoming! For example, this wonderful woman greeted us with a smile at the entrance of the fort, from then and there my feelings towards this experience was positive, upbeat, and I was ready for an adventure. I enjoyed this destination particularly because the interpreters took their time to explain the history of Boonesborough. It wasn't an overwhelming experience filled with too much information; it was a welcoming, intimate environment. An interpreter named Mike Murphy served as an 18th century carpenter who really took his time to create an oral and visual personalized perception of the day in the life of a carpenter. This interpreter was very cordial, even going as far as allowing me to take a picture with him in his workspace. In less than two hours I was taken along an amazing, enticing journey through a 20 minute video tutorial of the history of Boonesborough, a step by step day in the life of a farmer, carpenter, blacksmith, weaver, and shoe maker, and a walk through of the affordable Fort Boonesborough gift shop. I would encourage that anyone and everyone take a visit to this wonderful fort full of historic wonder, interpersonal interpretation of early Appalachian inhabitants, and a closed-knit intimate environment full of learning. read more

This place is exotic and full of inspiration. I really like the way they recreated the architectural setting of pioneers in an authentic way. At first, they offer an orientation movie to provide you with an overall understanding of the community. From there one has the opportunity to explore their gardening system of the community, see the vegetable grown at the time and even have the chance to plant some seeds with Mr. Brooks the gardener. Not only the garden, there are all set of activity that characterize a well-organized community such as carpentry, forgery, leathery etc. From my own experience, I believe that this site provide one with inspiration and understanding of early development of our modern technology. As my professor, Dr. Hackbert said: "this is an illustration of technology and applied design". I must say that one could not agree more with this statement. The entire community is just an illustration of a sustainable community. While our community is concerned by the sustainability of our economic system, it is important that we often look back at ancient living system to inspire ourselves with new ideas, and Fort Boonesborough is just the right place to do so. read more

My recent visit to Fort Boonesborough was really a pleasure. The fort appeals to a variety of interests, whether they are history, crafts, or farming. The fort consisted of little cabins which held a specific craft or amenity. For each cabin there was a historically dressed demonstrator. All of the demonstrators were extremely friendly and helpful. They encouraged questions and were honest with their answers. I particularly enjoyed the company of Barbara and Bill Elliot. The Elliot's were representing the "food ways" portion of the camp. They even allowed my fellow classmates and I to plant some beans in their garden. It was a truly an enlightening experience. At the time of my visit, there was a large group of elementary students exploring as well. They seemed to be highly enjoying themselves. Obviously Fort Boonesborough is an attraction that is capable of engaging various ages as well as interests. For that reason, I would highly recommend stopping by the fort whether you're with your family or colleagues! And don't forget to stop by the garden and try some of that fresh lettuce. Boonesborough is the fascinating historical fort which Daniel Boone helped to develop. This isn't just some old abandoned fort, rather, it is populated with friendly and knowledgeable greeters who are dressed for the time period. Perfect for any field trip with the goal of learning about historical settlers, the fort sports multiple cabins, a general store, a spinning demonstration, a wood work area, a blacksmith's work area, and numerous other historically appropriate areas. Aside from the time period appropriate pieces, there is also a small museum and an orientation area where a film on the fort's history is shown every half hour. Gun lovers might find the fort particularly interesting because of the gun smith, who has been making guns for more than twenty five years and specializes in flintlock riffles. He presented our group with a wealth of knowledge. Those of you who can't go anywhere without picking up a souvenir will be delighted by the gift shop, which is a mixture of old and new, with its old fashioned maple candies, Ale 8's, and numerous knickknacks. read more

If you are coming this way you should stop by, the interpreters are so connected to the stories that they tell which make it so much more amazing and enthusiastic. Mike Murphy, a carpenter was one of the most interesting people I have ever met in my life and his story was amazing about how when the people traveled they could not take everything with them so they had to make it when they got there, and how he showed that was fantastic. Also the short film of the creation Boonesborough was very informative and I strongly recommend this attraction for not just people who have children which would be very good for them learning about the history, but also for the older more mature person who likes looking at tourist attractions that not only make sense but have a place in history and tells a great story. read more

I had a tremendous day spending my morning at Fort Boonesborough State Park! All of the interpreters are more than friendly and are willing to answer any questions you have. The workers all know their information in depth and are able to explain it in great ways, as they are dressed as they are from the 1700's time period. I found myself learning loads of fascinating history. Definitely a great family destination to spend a wonderful day learning in a great atmosphere as you are able to enjoy the weather because the park is mainly outside. This fort adds an exciting environmental experience that many museums cannot offer. read more

This fort, while small, is a deep pool of exciting historic knowledge. A wellspring of passion and history is available to visitors through the shop workers, storytellers, and guides. In our one hour visit to the fort, we barely scratched the surface of the fun history lesson. I could have easily spent hours in the cabins of these historians. I found myself thinking, " If these guys could be my professors, I would be an A+ history buff." The fort maintains historical validity, welcomes visitors with hospitality as good as grandma's, and still portrays history with an amusing spunk. read more

My summer institute classmates and our professor visited the Fort Boonesborough to learn more about the history of the place and take a look at it with our own eyes. It was a wonderful and informative experience. We roamed around the Fort and went inside the wooden structures. We also watched a movie about the Fort and visited the museum which was full of historical artifacts and displays. Besides that, we had several conversations with people who were participating in the reenactment and it was a sheer pleasure to learn about the Fort and the kind of life people had there. read more
