Cool spot to think this is the most Southern point of Illinois and where the Ohio River meets Mississippi River. Nothing much around the area, just the rivers, some benches around. It really feels that time has forgotten this place.

The southernmost tip of Illinois (taken from the ground)!

Located literally on the southernmost tip of Illinois (as well as the lowest point in the state) is Fort Defiance State Park. I haven't known very much about this historic park that long, and apparently none of my friends in the St. Louis area did. If you haven't been here yet, I highly recommend checking it out! I would start in the parking lot that is right at the main entrance. Plenty of great views and photo opportunities await. Even though it is in poor shape, there is the iconic sign that reads 'shortest route in Illinois', which has the U.S. Highways 60 and 62 on it. There's also historical markers, but I don't know if that building is ever open to the public. (Knowing Illinois' financial condition, probably not!). Then there is the short drive to the part that gives the visitor the best experience. There is a lot to see, but the one thing that stands out is the lookout structure, which is modeled to be like a pilot house deck. It consists of three levels, with a sheltered picnic area is on the bottom. You'll also find a historical marker which talks about the meeting of the rivers. You can also go directly to the river. Just be careful though - use your common sense. Take a moment and check out the 360-degree views! Again, this is so worth checking out, whether you just love history, scenery, geography, whatever. This is one of the few places in the United States that you'll see a confluence of two major rivers (Mississippi and Ohio), as well as the intersection of three states (IL, KY and MO).

Thankfully we lucked out and we didn't get rained on but this place was still pretty busy. Depending on when you show up parking can be a bit Limited. The trails to the top is not too long either but the interaction is so long and breathtaking. I've never been to a park since I've been to Matheson State Park where you are able to climb on every little thing. The views here and the experience is unlike any other. It felt like I was back in the Smoky Mountains but with less tourists. They have public restrooms here as well though if there's a line it could take a while. Me and my wife spent a good few hours here and if you follow the trail it will take you right back to the parking lot. We also enjoyed that this place is also dog friendly too!

This is a very quick route where you can see the famous camel rock actually many of the rocks look like faces ;)

I've never been to an active park that is so well maintained and the fact that it has no graffiti on it! This park is so Interactive and I thought it was convenient that it had porta potties next to it as well. Even the ice cream man came by to visit. Plenty of great Interactive things that check out that are one-of-a-kind like climbing got a dragon and even the playground is big enough for grown-ups to walk around without actually it's time to climb on stuff. This place was like walking into a Renaissance fair , I highly recommend checking this place out!

It is like stepping into a Dungeons & Dragons story. The highlight thought is without a doubt the castle. There are ramparts, hidden armories, gargoyles, coats of arms, statues and a whole menagerie of fantastical creatures. I had to tear my 5 and 3 year old away from it. It could have kept them busy for hours. There is also a touching backstory to the park. It was founding in memory of Jeremy "Boo" Rochman who died in a car crash nearby. He loved fantasy and his family set up the park in his honor. The park is privately funded, and can accept donations through its website. So if you do stop in and enjoy it, please make sure to support the park.

Sadly a storm took out the electricity to the toy house and he isn't permitted to fix it because the electric is connected to the house and the town said he has to upgrade all the electric in the house, which he and his wife don't have the means for right now. When he had electricity a lot of the toys would move and contraptions on the property had lights and water on some of them. The toys stretch back to the 1940s. Definitely a trip down memory lane. The gentleman who owns it is very nice and came out to give us a tour and pointed out the many puns related to the displays. The little general store his grandparents ran back in the early half of the 1900s is still standing and full of interesting memorabilia and artifacts. It's donations only, no cost, but the man and his wife can use the help. If you're not a fan of weird junk art and old toys, you probably wouldn't like it. We spent about 45 minutes there.
