I rented a monthly room here for nearly 5 years. The pricing is affordable compared to other options (cheaper than Music Garage), and the location and parking situation feels safe. Management and those at the front desk are fairly easy to deal with. We shared the room with two other bands, and had some turnover over the past 5 years, and never had issues with updating the lease - they even helped coordinate us changing locks. However, I had a very rude experience when deciding to move out and swap the lease over when I moved out (maybe just someone having a bad day). I was using auto-pay but was contacted at least 1-2 times per year saying it didn't go through. I would contact them to discuss and they would admit they goofed and everything was fine. not a big deal, but annoying. They started a tech incubator in the building attached which has made parking a lot more competitive on certain days and at certain times and can be a real pain. I can attest to a previous review that the sound insulation between rooms is not great. They claim to have double dry walled (and that might be true) but if you're anything less than a rock band, you'll be able to clearly hear the band(s) in the rooms next to yours. At some points it even sounded like we were all out of key because of the sound bleed from the adjacent room. A few years ago there was a fire on the roof, and the fire department's hose water blasted through the roof windows and soaked our room (other rooms were affected as well). We got lucky that most of our gear was on shelves and didn't get damaged. Management was great about it. They had industrial dehumidifiers in there right away, and I was contacted by phone about the issue. They also gave us a discount on rent that month. Major kudos to them for handling this situation. Pros: - price - facility is clean and has been updated over the years, feels secure - a single covered load-in / out garage - several hand carts for load-in / out - they are flexible on sharing monthly rooms with other bands - vending options are good - 24X7 key fob access Cons: - noise bleed from room to room is pretty bad - climate control is awful. Our room was either freezing cold (to the point of getting stiff hands) or way too warm. - the only nice bathrooms are caged off outside of operating hours. The other bathrooms are pretty gross. read more

Accessible, spacious, moderately sound-proof, and easy load in/out. This was formerly "Knox Avenue", but has changed over. Now, there's soap and paper towels in the bathrooms. A real win. read more

Rehearsed in a million places. Fort Knox is the best. Easy access. Great gear. Professional (and very attractive) staff. Equipment tech on premises. Huge facility with a variety of rooms. Email confirmation and a call the day of scheduled rehearsal to confirm equipment requests. Fort Knox also has a rewards program. 10 hours of rental time gets you a free hour which is crazy because rental time is almost free to begin with. $6.00 an hour per member. Can't beat it. I was in my cousins new studio after he moved it from MG and I was impressed by the new digs at Fort Knox. I was more impressed when I saw one of the owners walking around, getting chummy with the tenants. I mentioned my carpentry background and he proceeded to give me a tour of the place and what their plans are. Talk about square footage! If only I had musical skillz. I only have one complaint. This is a quote from Fort Knox's Craigslist ad: 'All walls/ceiling have been acoustically treated, insulated, and sealed to minimize room to room bleed'. Their website mentions this as well. If youve been to Fort Knox Studios you know this is a joke. If theres a band playing next to you or across from you it sounds like they're practically in your room. a full band playing next to you WILL be 70 to 80 decibels in your room, I guarantee it. You can even hear what other people are talking about in other rooms, its that clear. This is a huge disadvantage for musicians because we have to write and talk stuff out sometimes. Coming in and trying to compose or work something out with bandmates is ABSOLUTELY INFURIATING when you have to practically shout to communicate. Ive been to plenty of practice places and this is the first time ive dealt with this kind of issue. I know its not impossible to sound proof it to where this wont be an problem. I'm positive the ceiling isnt ''acoustically treated'' because thats mostly where the sound comes from. If you come in and you're running through a setlist with your band you're fine. But again, you can forget trying to write or talk something over. This is the only real flaw ive found. I wouldnt have written this if they didnt brag about their 'acoustic treatment' etc.. Aside from this I really like the place. The staff is decent, and helpful. Its clean, temp controll is good. Just make sure to schedule your jams around your neighbours' and you'll be fine. read more

Was a tenant from day one when originally opened as Knox Avenue, run by the management team that runs Chicago's BEST rehearsal studios (Superior Street). Power play among the ownership group brought in new management, who promised more profits for the owners... fast forward 8-9 months, and the place is slapped with a CEASE AND DESIST ALL BUSINESS order by the City of Chicago for not only failing to procure the proper business licenses, but also for deceptive practices relatd to that... Bottom line is one week into September, which we'd already paid in full for, we are told we should rehearse 'at our own risk', and if the police stop by to ask us to stop, we should...and we know the police have already done this at least once. So...the secure, total access place we thought we had is basically not accessible. we can't use it to rehearse, and frankly, the management has dropped the ball with regards to communicating to tenants their intent to fix the situation ASAP. epic failure doesn't even begin to describe it. I have used practically every rehearsal facility in the city, from hourly spaces to 24/7 full access long-term lease rooms where I resided for YEARS. This is the worst handled situation I've encountered in any of them. read more

my experience here has only been a positive one. all of the people and players i have met here have been a wealth of knowledge, and a great fun to be around. the building is accessable to residents 24 / 7 and there are so many commodities geared toward musicians that make other rehearsal facilities look like brothels. the front desk team is always willing to work with you and give of their time to make their residents more comfortable in a variety of ways such as adjusting temperature, lending a vacuum, cleaning the lounge after we leave a mess, taking some time to look at your broken guitar when all you did was forget the batteries (no, really, it was the gremlins that took the batteries out of my guitar), cleaning up spills late at night or just having a conversation. I am willing to admit that i have taken advantage of all of these things. there are cameras everywhere. i cannot name a single night when i have not felt safe at this facility. i have spent afternoons, evenings, late nights and even overnights here, and i probably would not do it if i were anywhere else. the connections I have made with curret clients and pros have opened up so many doors that i never knew existed. the people and the environment are the reason i keep coming back. thanks fort knox! read more

I needed to post a review here because I see there are a few that mention the issues this place had with the Alderman and the City. These issues have been resolved, the cops are not able to stop anyone from rehearsing, and access is 24 hours. The facility is clean and secure. Rooms are air conditioned and more or less sound proof which is great. The only reason I give 4 stars is because access to the pool table is not 24 hours read more

Easy to get to, access around the clock and the space is truly fantastic. Just moved in and load in and load out couldn't be easier. And you can tell from all the work going on that management is serous about the space and making it the premiere facility of its kind in Chicagoland. Our teenagers are probably the youngest band to practice at Ft Knox Studios and have been there since January of this year. The "issues" that the studio had, mentioned by other reviews, were resolved in late 2012. In December 2012, we visited and seached over 5 different places for the band to practice and this was our first choice. Because they are teenagers, we wanted very specific things:affordable, safe, and easily accessable by mutiple families, & a staff that knows sound since as parents we are no experts. We have never been anything other than pleased by the staff. the equipment, and service we've gotten from them. We use the hourly rental rooms. The rates for students are reasonable and there is a frequent user card that enables them to get a buy 10 get one hour free rate. They also have rooms for monthly rental. read more

Location is excellent, equipment is very solid, staff is helpful and available, rooms are clean and ready to roll, cost is fine. Ask for a room not next to Spinal Tap, Jr., though, if you're rehearsing acoustic or quiet material. All in all, I'm a satisfied customer. read more

Fort Knox is, in short, the best rehearsal facility I've ever seen. I knew about this place way back when it was called Knox Avenue, but I was in last week for an hourly rehearsal, and it is absolutely killer. Friends had told me that the city had been giving them a hard time last year, but from what I could see, everything is cleared up and these guys have done a LOT of work to make this place the best in the city. Only thing thing that sucks is they are totally sold out of monthly rooms (I hear they're building more), but the hourly rooms are seriously unreal - the gear is amazing!
