The name refers to their proposed connection between coffee and wine, both of which they specialise in. They recommend pairings of coffees and particular wines to try. I think they might have a hard time convincing us of this as the two don't seem like natural companions; but if I'd been in town for a bit longer I might have taken them up on the offer and enhanced my education. I love the layout and the way everything is informatively labelled, and the staff are keen to tell you about the varieties of coffee on offer. I confess I was more interested in a brunch snack at that point, and settled for one of the specials, avocado with red onion on sourdough toast - what a taste sensation! I'd never tried avocado on toast before, but it works really well. With a good strong Long Black on the side, I was content to sit and try and puzzle out the cryptogram on the wall depicting the relationships between coffee and wine with a variety of arrows connecting different letters. In the end I gave up, deciding it was just a bit of fun, but somebody please correct me if it does mean something, as it's keeping me awake at nights! Although they are open late Wednesday through Saturday, it's not really an evening restaurant-y kind of place; it's more of a tapas menu that they have on. But it would be perfect for a pre- or post- theatre glass of wine and a nibble, and it's just along the road from the Theatre Royal.

The staff are always friendly and keen to help you find what you want, whether it's a quick cup of coffee, a light snack or something more substantial for lunch. I've tried most items on the menu but my favourite is the sausage sandwiche with chilli jam, avocado and rocket on South dough toast. I always add extra bacon as well and it is divine! Admittedly I haven't been here in the evening all that often so can't comment on the evening menu but for a quick stop at lunch it is one of the best places in town.

I was sad to hear that the cafe de paris had closed. I believe that recently the owners decided to transform the restaurant into an american diner, partly due to the saturation of the french food market in this location. I can't wait to go there and see what they have done! From what I saw of cafe de paris the owners of this venue seemed to make creative and quality choices. I was a big fan of cafe de paris.

Now don't get me wrong, the food here isn't bad by any means; they have a good range of meals, including wedges, soups, and of course pasties, but I was left with the feeling that it could have been better. There are samples to smell of every tea available and I must have spent at least 10 minutes just smelling the teas! I finally decided on picking up a 'fasting tea', which is beautiful in both smell and taste. I also decided on some 'dragon well green tea' which was recommended to me by the owner. Who, I may add, is incredibly knowledgable about all the teas in the shop and was delighted to help. Next time I'm down that way I'll be stopping in for a refill.

This random surprise hit me on a sunny Monday in Winchester when I saw two older ladies sat idly…read moreoutside having an ice cream in a large waffle cone that looked like caramel. Upon asking where they got it, they seemed to ignore me, which isn't a response I used to. When glancing more closely, I saw a tag with a language that wasn't English and politely excused myself. However, I asked the men on the bench next to them who pointed at the shop under my nose and in front of my face, and another up the road. On entering, there was a warm, friendly staff, who quite wickedly offered me a taste of the Dorset Sea Salted Caramel gelato. This was irresistible, along with the Honeycombe flavour too. Not only was this double waffle cone delight lovely, but it was slightly less expensive than the other ice cream vendor and, as an added bonus, it came with the choice of either a golden chocolate or dark chocolate stick! Heartily recommended and a place I'll need to take my partner and get the stamp on their loyalty card.

We arrived at 3pm so the hot food was finished, but we were delighted with our doorstop sarnies of egg & cress and ham & cheese with pickle. There was a great selection of drinks but as the cold white wine was finished, I settled for a pleasant still water. We had a lovely time in a gorgeous venue and would be happy to return.
