I've been wanting binoculars, and came across one made by Vortex, which is a company I favor for sights. It's a fantastic brand with a lifetime warranty! I was able to pick up some 38 specials much cheaper than in my home state, and without the stupid background check fee and additional 11% firearm tax. I loved that I could go up and down the aisles and pick out what I wanted myself. I was hoping to find some CCI for my picky Walther, but came up short. No worries as I have another week and a half to collect ammo. The clerk helping me was super friendly! I am not sure I am ever coming back as I am currently on the cross-country trip of my lifetime, but I will definitely look for the chain along my route. There were sports and equipment sections I didn't even know existed. The store truly has everything you could possibly need and then some. What impressed me most was the staff. They were knowledgeable and helpful but didn't hover every five seconds like some stores do, which allowed me to really explore and absorb everything. The shoe selection was outstanding with every kind of running shoe, ski boot, work boot and outdoor footwear you could imagine, and the shoe staff were clearly well trained helping customers. I also spent about 45 minutes in the luggage section, which was surprisingly impressive. It's clearly a curated department run by someone who truly understands travel. I spoke with a luggage specialist who I believe is from Asia and a serious world traveler herself. She was incredibly knowledgeable and immediately understood what I meant when I told her I was tired of hard-sided luggage and wanted something built for an active lifestyle. She introduced me to a beautiful 100-liter Patagonia rolling duffel with durable wheels, strong zippers, and soft-sided construction that can actually handle real travel. These types of bags come with lifetime guarantees on the wheels and zippers, and now I'm officially saving my pennies to buy one. They must treat their employees well, because many of them have been there a long time, and they have a wealth of knowledge (vs that national recreation equipment store that shall not be named, where employee turnover is huge). JAX focuses on the higher end of clothes, shoes, and equipment; if that's your focus, start here as their selection is big and high quality. I do a lot of backpacking, kayaking, and canoeing, and they are the place I start first. If they think I should look at something they don't have, I've been impressed over the years that they will suggest another store such as some of the sports stores in Boulder. From JAX over the years, I've purchased sleeping pads, daypacks, packs for month-long expeditions, boots and shoes for climbing, hiking, winter mountaineering, raft trips, and general around town. They helped me get a special long fiberglass kayak paddle, and a pair of small ultra high-end binoculars needed for a specific trip. Plus climbing gear, alpine and nordic ski stuff (though their selection of skis is limited), a wide variety of flies and nymphs, and helped me figure out a super small, lightweight gun sight.
