Yelpers, if you have been following my reviews over the past few days you will have noticed that I have discovered some mighty fine little hang outs in Ipswich. Yep, no word of a lie. Fourthchild is one of these great hang outs and boasts such a Melbourne-esque feel as soon as you walk through the doors. Upon entering it's the simple but gorgeous layout that strikes you first about this little joint. There are fabulous small details such as cakes being served in star shaped liners and orange juice in a jar with a paper straw that makes me love Fourthchild is the bees knees when it comes to delicious baked treats. My personal fave is the flourless mini chocolate cake, or I hear the carrot cake is also a winner. Their coffee is worth boasting about, with the Barista clearly capable and experienced on the coffee making front. It's my understanding that Fourthchild also does a mean breakfast/brunch on the weekends and is the only place I know who sells organic, iced earl grey tea. So swallow your pride, and make a trip to the Switch for some Fourthchild action. It will not disappoint. The woman behind fourthchild named it so because she already has three kidlets and figured running a cafe would be like raising a child. Kudos to her also for deciding to open something this hip and unheard of in Ipswich, "Just because I felt like it." Not as busy as most Brisbane cafes on a Sunday morning it was steadily filling up when we arrived around 10:30am. It had been on my list to visit for a while so friends and I piled in the car for a Sunday road trip to "The Switch" There were five breakfast items to select and unintentionally we had five people dining who all chose individual items. Don't expect many frills from this menu. It is simple and removes any temptation for decision overload (although when looking at their cake cabinet it may be a different story). They make most of their goods on site and it shows (in a good way). The bread for my scrambled eggs, mushrooms and spinach was more like a damper- it was soft in the centre, fresh and the right amount of crunch in the crust. The meal was good but lacked a little flavour for my liking. The eggs could have been improved with some simple seasoning or herbs. Of all the meals we sampled the best would have to have been the "frenchie" french toast with banana, salted caramel and honey comb. Surrounded by tempting sweets and cakes I'm going to take a stab in the dark that this is what fourthchild excels at, rather than run of the mill breakfasts. Still, all in all, minus the delay in our coffees arriving to the table it was a pleasant out-of-town cafe breakfast. Should I be local, I'd be all over this place like a rash. read more

This is a lovely spot on the main street of Ipswich, where you could be forgiven for thinking the clock stopped some time ago. The facades of the city are a snapshot of a time long passed, which is certainly part of the city of Ipswich's charm. Fourthchild is a restaurant which occupies an impressive amount of space which has been styled in a suitably rustic style. We went for breakfast. The menu is simple and our food was delivered quickly, it was tasty but given the spectacular decor and size of the establishment I was definately anticipating something really special. The customer service was laboured, I didn't feel overly welcome and we were playing with the uneveness of our table and although the waitress could see our struggle, there were no attempts to assist us in remedying the situation. We ended up fixing it ourselves. This was pretty expensive for what I would describe as an "adequate" experience. read more

I am always on the look out for great coffee, delicious lunch/brunch options. Forth Child Restaurant & Cafe delivers on all these points. Would highly recommend them next time you are passing through Ipswich. Restaurant space is perfect for small intimate gatherings or a quiet table for two. Delicious selection of sweet and savory menu items to choose from. Staff are very friendly and from order placement to table has very short turn around. A definite must do! read more

Had lunch here last week and absolutely LOVED it! L.O.V.E.! Love'd it!! The only downfalls were a) we had to wait an unusually long time to get our coffees... and b) we were kinda squished into a corner really really close to another table... but that really is me being REALLY picky.. EVERYTHING ELSE about the place was FABULOUS!! The service was friendly, the food was fantastic and I just adored the space! I had the chicken salad which was tangy and delicious, coffees were great, the iced chocolate made with milk and real melted chocolate had my taste buds doing a happy dance and the raspberry & almondine tart made Me want to do a happy dance! If you find yourself in Ipswich.. DEF stop by and grab a bite! read more

Refreshing to find (finally) a restaurant in Ipswich with fresh, simple, sexy food. The decor is earthy and old fashioned with stressed brick walls and polished wood floors. With all the old buildings in Ipswich main street you could be mistaken for thinking you were in the backstreets of Sydney which is sooo cool. MORE IMPORTANTLY the food is great. I can sit there comfortably by myself with a coffee and not feel out of place. Corporate suits and mums mingle together. The staff are also very chatty and accomodating. For those who don't know, forthchild changed hands a while back. Since the changeover I have a several consistently bad experiences at this establishment. On two occasions breakfast came out cold and was presented horribly, not to mention the unacceptable wait time everyone was expected to endure. I have also had dinner here and would not recommend. I couldn't eat the twice cooked duck that was served to me, it was the worst meal I have ever been served in my life. Dry, burned and just thrown on the plate AND CHARGED $35 FOR THE PRIVILEGE. I couldn't recommend forthchild from my experiences since the change over. It's not the same warm-hearted place it used to be. Many I know share this sentiment. Here's hoping this place, with loads of potential, starts to deliver. Ipswich deserves better. read more

I have been to fourthchild several times with friends - its really an amazing cafe. The staff are really friendly, the food is great and the coffee is beautiful. I often have the eggs benedict, which is done wonderfully with organic and free-range produce. The vibe is great and the space is inviting and sophisticated. Well worth a visit. read more

One of my absolute favourite cafe's in the Brisbane area, let alone Ipswich. Coffee is great. Food is amazing and changes everyday, which means you will never get bored. The one downside to this is the more popular dishes can run out sometimes. Do yourself a favour and go here! read more

Venue and atmosphere is fantastic. Staff were attentive and friendly. However having had breakfast at the restaurant on several occasions, on all occasions the food was bland and tasteless. Which was a surprise considering that everything else was perfect. For the price, the food has a lot of room for improvement .... The big breakfast and omelette were both under seasoned and the hash brown bland and oily. read more

Won't be going back here! 30 min wait for a coffee and nearly 45 mins for food? Food was very average, basic really and the Breaky board was disgraceful. Don't waste your time or money. Go elsewhere. read more

Good coffee, great service, not for me. Everything is objectively great but I like my coffee waiters/waitresses to be cold, apathetic creatures, entirely aloof to my needs and wants. I'm in here to write my novel, I don't need your smile. For a really terrible time I recommend your nearest Coffee Club, it's horrendous. 5/5 for being genuinely lovely. read more

I went to Fourthchild with my boyfriend on a quiet Friday morning. I've heard lots of really positive things about this place, so I had high expectations. I *REALLY* wanted to like this place, but it just didn't happen. Given that there were 5 people in total in the whole cafe, I didn't understand why it took 25 mins for lunch to come out. I ordered the "special" of the day which was pull a part beef tacos. The soft taco was dry and hard. The meat was well seasoned, but what I couldn't get over was the hair in my guacamole. I quietly told the waitress and asked for another meal, and all they replaced was the guacamole. Then they charged me full price for the meal. I'm sorry, I just don't get it and I won't be coming back again. read more

Casual Sunday brekkie turned very unpleasant. Fourthchild has reopened under new management and apparently also a new chef. We were asked how everything was and when my husband was honest and said we were a bit disappointed, we were asked why. We thought they might take some feedback. Not received well at all. No interest in what we had to say and that was made very clear when we were promptly cut us off to ask for our money. We were stunned to silence and weren't able to say another word (some of which would have actually been good). We just paid and left, absolutely horrified by the rude behaviour. We ordered a breakfast parfait and a Potato Galette that contained smoked salmon with poached eggs and hollandaise sauce on an English muffin. Tasted nice, sauce done well... just the eggs were hard (overcooked) and they obviously ran out of English muffins so we got just one half piece of white toast. The parfait however was way too sweet, even sharing it we only ate half. The menu feels exactly like you're at the Coffee Club which was our biggest disappointment. The old Fourthchild menu had us coming back regularly because it was so unique and well executed. I really want to give 1 star, only because of how offended we were but that wouldn't be fair. On the upside, our tall, bearded waiter (sorry I didn't get his name) was lovely and apologetic about the wait time and friendly. Shame they don't have more of him on staff! And the only other thing I will say is they now have a lunch menu and this looks quite good. Its a bit different and sounds yum - shame I won't be back to try it now. read more
