We hoped that the pastries (purchased for the road ahead) would bail this place out but the muffin was not really as advertised (too dry and too little sugar), and the pistachio pastry was so-so. The place gets some bonus points for location, ambiance, friendly service (water on the tables would be nice though!), and comfy seats, which brings it back up to three stars for us.

Fourthchild is one of these great hang outs and boasts such a Melbourne-esque feel as soon as you walk through the doors. Upon entering it's the simple but gorgeous layout that strikes you first about this little joint. There are fabulous small details such as cakes being served in star shaped liners and orange juice in a jar with a paper straw that makes me love Fourthchild is the bees knees when it comes to delicious baked treats. My personal fave is the flourless mini chocolate cake, or I hear the carrot cake is also a winner. Their coffee is worth boasting about, with the Barista clearly capable and experienced on the coffee making front. It's my understanding that Fourthchild also does a mean breakfast/brunch on the weekends and is the only place I know who sells organic, iced earl grey tea. So swallow your pride, and make a trip to the Switch for some Fourthchild action. It will not disappoint. Bare in mind that it's a hit with the locals so best to get in early or late to avoid crowds.

Not as busy as most Brisbane cafes on a Sunday morning it was steadily filling up when we arrived around 10:30am. It had been on my list to visit for a while so friends and I piled in the car for a Sunday road trip to "The Switch" There were five breakfast items to select and unintentionally we had five people dining who all chose individual items. Don't expect many frills from this menu. It is simple and removes any temptation for decision overload (although when looking at their cake cabinet it may be a different story). They make most of their goods on site and it shows (in a good way). The bread for my scrambled eggs, mushrooms and spinach was more like a damper- it was soft in the centre, fresh and the right amount of crunch in the crust. The meal was good but lacked a little flavour for my liking. The eggs could have been improved with some simple seasoning or herbs. Of all the meals we sampled the best would have to have been the "frenchie" french toast with banana, salted caramel and honey comb. Surrounded by tempting sweets and cakes I'm going to take a stab in the dark that this is what fourthchild excels at, rather than run of the mill breakfasts. Still, all in all, minus the delay in our coffees arriving to the table it was a pleasant out-of-town cafe breakfast. Should I be local, I'd be all over this place like a rash.

Lunch menu is pretty extensive. They serve classic cafe options. Sandwiches, toasties, wraps, fries, soups etc. They have a pretty extensive range of sweets as well. They usually have some kind of drink special on the board behind the counter. Like strawberry lemonade or sweet berry iced teas which I think is nice change from just your usual soft drink/juice/flavoured water you pick from the fridge. Stops me from getting a Tiro every time. The staff are quite friendly and the service is usually very fast. You don't have to wait long for your coffee or meals. You have the choice of indoor or outdoor seating and it is very open. It's a good space for families. Parking can be difficult as it is street only and there's a fair bit of construction around there at the moment. But it's free parking so you win some, you lose some. It's a great place to swing through for a quick take away coffee and sandwich. If you eat in the meals are alright, not the single greatest thing you'll ever eat. Expect your standard cafe fare and you shouldn't really walk away too disappointed.

There is a small selection of good quality food on offer, not at all the usual quick take away meal. The coffee was good, served quickly and with a smile.. What I like about this little cafe is there is a selection of pantry items on sale as well. Mainly spices, flavoured oils, pastas, herbs, chutneys, chillies and jams. It was an absolute delight walking in and noticing the natural flow of the cafe, the items for sale, the were place nicely on shelves that did not over shadow the products. It didn't feel like you were walking into a store (Cole's or Woolies) at all, just a natural feel. Then moving onto the cafe at the back of the store.. There was a bench and stools to sit and eat or read a book on the inside of the cafe as well as sidewalk tables to sit and enjoy a light meal with friends outside. I would stop at this cafe again.

I love the atmosphere in here, from the pleasant, friendly service to the great menu on offer. I have been in here for breakfast and lunch with out being disappointed with the meal received. The coffee is pretty good as well. I have stopped in here many times for a takeaway coffee. Not only does the cafe have a great retro feel to it, it boast some pretty impressive art as well. Cactus Espresso host some impressive art shows and parties throughout the year. A great local cafe and would highly recommend it to all.
