Framewoods of Topeka is a wonderful place for all your picture needs. I had a delightful experience there, just last week. First, a bit of a backstory: A little over 8 years ago, I brought a poster of Ophelia by John Everett Millais to Framewoods of Topeka. I had an absolutely delightful experience, so when I got a new poster.. this one from a tv show called Doctor Who, I knew I could bring in my new poster and it would get the best care, attention, and dare I say it, love. :) I knew they wouldn't laugh at me for wanting to do something unusual like putting a poster into a frame. I was right. I came in and spoke with Apollonia Jamison, showed her the poster and she instantly started being creative. (I told her a bit of my background with the Ophelia poster.) Gary Blitsch heard my story and came over to check things out. He asked a bit about Ophelia so I had my son take a picture and message it to me. Mr. Blitsch said he remembered it, because it had an unusual cut, just like the original Ophelia painting currently part of the Tate Gallery. Meanwhile, Mrs. Jamison continued to bring out sample frames and matboard and matching them. Mr. Blitsch was familiar with Doctor Who and brought out a frame that I fell in love with. Working with the frame, Mrs. Jamison started filing through colors and laying them on the poster to find the perfect match. And she did! It was an unusual color, but it made the picture snap!! Absolutely gorgeous! I highly recommend Framewoods of Topeka and Mr. Blitsch and Mrs. Jamison! They really will make your experience fun and the final results will be amazing! read more

History

Established in 1989.

Framewoods of Topeka first opened its doors over 25 years ago offering archival quality custom framing and fine art. In 1992, Gary Blitsch purchased the company and began expansion of its art and framing services. We have become a leader in the art and framing industry by consistently providing exceptional personal service and innovative products for our clients. In 1999, the gallery underwent a major expansion to create a much larger art gallery space, and was renamed SouthWind Gallery. Today, SouthWind Gallery and Framewoods of Topeka are located side by side in one convenient location where residential and corporate clients get the best of both worlds--fine art and quality archival framing. Our beautiful, spacious gallery allows customers to view original art and a selection of limited edition prints for home or business.

Meet the Business Owner: Gary B.

Gary Blitsch, has lived in Topeka since 1962. After serving in the U. S Navy, he began a 30-year career in banking. In 1992, Gary purchased Framewoods of Topeka, a custom picture framing business. Framewoods has grown to be an innovative leader in the custom framing industry, and in 1997 expanded it's floor space to create the SouthWind Gallery. The gallery has earned the reputation of being one of the best galleries in the Midwest. Gary's business background and sales skills, plus what he calls his "street smarts", have served him well. He enjoys promoting the arts in Kansas and is involved in many national and local arts and civic organizations in Topeka. "I'm one of the lucky ones who loves to go to work everyday! I have a great team of very creative people who take pride in their work. We try to stay ahead on new technology and the ever-changing trends in our field. We have fun and try to make it an enjoyable experience for our clients, too. This is not a stuffy gallery.

This is a great local shop that has excellent service. I first came in to get help protecting a…read morespecial award Eric R. got from the Air Force upon his leaving his job in Vegas to move here to MHK. It was a piece of cardstock glued to a plaque and could not be removed with ruining it. The award means so much to Eric R. so I wanted to find a way to cover this paper. The frame shop experts could not remove the page from the plaque, so they placed the entire thing in a frame and put glass over it. However, it was wrinkled when I brought it in due the the glue. I decided to contact Eric R.'s former supervisor to get another copy of the award, which is very personalized and full of inside jokes from his squadron. His supervisor shipped it to me in a folder so it arrived in pristine condition, not glued to anything. Yesterday I took this new version to the frame shop and was able to find a new way to make it look special, with blue matting and a silver frame. I was able to use a pre-existing frame rather than custom to save some money, and it will be ready in a week, which is fantastic! I really appreciate the service here by the very knowledgeable staff.

And I tell them, "Well, The Frame Gallery on Westport Road, of course!" This place is awesome. When you walk in, the first thing you notice is that they obviously have good taste; and honestly, if someone's going to be putting my artwork in a custom-made frame, I want them to have good taste. It shows that they're going to take the same care with my work's presentation as they do with their own. It says a lot about a place when you can walk in and think to yourself, "Yeah, they get it." The work they do is awesome. Top notch, seriously. I've gone in needing a particular kind of framing for my work, and the entire process of making that happen was effortless. When they saw what I was bringing in, and how I wanted it worked up, they instantly knew the best solution, both in construction and in choice of materials. They're looking at your art with an artist's eye, and the no-nonsense attitude of fine craftsmen. That's who I want working on my artwork, my keepsakes, my gifts to others; not some part-time clerk at Hobby Lobby or Michaels who doesn't have the same care or experience. And as an added bonus : The Frame Gallery has a section in their shop called Tuffboy Antiques! I've spent a lot of time perusing their mostly mid-century treasures and ephemera. Obviously, the same taste and attention to detail that they put into their work goes into what they offer through their Antiques section.
