    Courtyard
    Grace K.

What a cute venue, a hidden gem surrounded by historic buildings and a little train stop. I attended a wedding at Franciscan Gardens, and although admittedly small in size, it comfortably accommodated a group of about 50 guests. Also loved that the courtyard was surrounded by tall shrubs, keeping the area cool and shaded throughout the afternoon. Overall a super cute venue, intimate, and beautifully decorated.

This is a wonderful little venue tucked away in San Juan Capistrano. I say 'tucked away' but that's only really in feeling than practicality. It's located in the heart of the city and walking distance from the train station, but you feel so isolated from the outside world that it feels like you're nowhere near it. I really appreciate their ability to do that. (With that said, we did hear the train bell go off once during the night. Hey, you can't win every time). The venue is best built for small weddings. That's because the ceremony area will, most likely also have to be used for the reception area as they do their best to spread tables out enough while also providing a space next to the raised band/DJ corner for a dance floor. They do this by moving everyone in to an empty interior room for a reception hour. While guests are there, the staff gets to work and brings in tables and chairs for dinner. It was a really well oiled machine. They do their best to maximize what space they have while also not making guests feel crammed together. That goes for both the exterior as well as the cocktail hour inside. In all, this was a beautiful venue to celebrate a marriage. If you are looking in the area, I highly recommend it. I am certain your guests will enjoy it.

Location is beautiful because the patio area is decorated by a luxurious green wall made from tall trees. Aside from the greenery, I don't think the venue is worth the price they charge for an event. (I will add that the food was good and portions were perfect) Things I did not like: 1) bathrooms are on the second floor 2) free parking is not far but not near (NOTE there is a paid parking establishment that goes directly to the backside of the venue ) 3) the cleaning crew started to clear decorations during the party. I thought that was rude and unprofessional 4) chairs are not confortable at all 5) our event was Saturday so there was a great deal of noise from the streets and train area SIDE NOTE: if considering this venue make sure you talk to your wedding planner about space, it is my personal opinion that this venue is for smaller gatherings.

    Rehearsal Dinner

We hosted a Rehearsal Dinner for the bridal party followed by a Welcome Reception for the next day's wedding guests. The event was fabulous! The outdoor lighting set the perfect mood, and the brick interior walls made a beautiful background for photos. It was a pleasure working with Anna, Elizabeth and Anna. Each was extremely knowledgeable about the menu and facility offerings. They helped me plan a menu that met my budget and a timetable for the two events. The food for both the dinner and the reception was delicious. The catering crew, led by Jordan, was awesome. They were so attentive, efficient and friendly.

We just had our wedding here for a total of around 120 guests. Absolutely wonderful. It's a great space that has both an indoor and outdoor option. I love the garden feel of the outdoor space with the fountain and pergola, it really looks like a beautiful villa. The hanging string lights are especially pretty at night. Nasime was an absolute pleasure to work with. She was always available to answer emails or calls even when we had last minute changes. Elizabeth was just as helpful and they really worked well as a team whenever the other was busy with an event or out of office. Our guests had an amazing time and even commented on how beautiful the location was. The food with 24 Carrot is truly top notch. Everyone loved their meals and hors d'œuvres. We were so happy with everything! Overall: Ambience, food, and drink are amazing. This place does cost a pretty penny but ultimately we found the pricing to be worth it for what we wanted. There is a huge benefit to having access to an indoor/outdoor space given that we married in March and the rain this year was so unpredictable. Food was delicious and the service was amazing. All of the bartenders and wait staff were so attentive and friendly. Only downside was that we could only access the venue starting at 10am which didn't leave the bridal party enough time to get ready. Groom and his side were set to use so it worked for them. They did provide a nice bucket of beers in the grooms room so that was a lovely touch. I ended up taking my bridal party next door to Floraison and it worked out much better! Would definitely recommend this venue and their staff!

If you need additional photo texture, the Mission SJC is nearby, Los Rios District is also walking distance, the Bridal suite is nice and big and the ceremony space is well-shaded. Very rustic, garden vibe with green walls and Spanish architecture.

Franciscan Gardens is an amazing venue! The setup is absolutely gorgeous with the greenery covering the high walls, the string lighting, the fountain, and the pergola. The food was catered by 24 Carrots and it was extremely delicious. Elizabeth, Anna, Nasime, Nicole were who I worked with and they were very communicative and easy to work with. They are clearly professionals who are experienced in this field. They were very easy to work with and were very kind when I would have to make adjustments. The location is also fabulous. It's on a walkable street so there's bars, restaurants, boutiques, etc. all within walking distance. There's also a parking lot right next to it so your guests can just park there for the wedding (I believe $2/hr or $20 for the whole day). It's a also 30 minute drive to SNA airport, and there's numerous hotels within walking distance or close driving distance - very convenient for guests. It's a very popular wedding venue, so many of the wedding vendors have previously worked with Franciscan Gardens - my vendors were all experienced with the venue and worked seamlessly with one another. It is on a busy street and near the train tracks so just be aware of that. They also just renovated the bridal suite and it is SO gorgeous. It looks amazing for the getting ready photos. In terms of pricing - I feel like it's pretty comparable to other OC venues. I felt that the base pricing is very reasonable, it's more of a matter of how many add-ons and extras you want, that's where it really starts to get pricey. Overall great experience! Pair the venue with some nice florals and it is truly a dream! We added hanging wisteria courtesy of Ruffle Effect and it was gorgeous. PC: Cassy Smith Photography

Getting ready at the bridal suite

We had our wedding here on October 15, 2023, and it was the best day ever! We initially picked this location because of how naturally beautiful and lush the venue is on its own; without any decorations. I was able to envision our dream wedding here, and we're so glad we went with Franciscan Gardens because the entire process (planning and execution) was so organized and smooth. Shoutout to Elizabeth, Anna, and Nasime for making it a great wedding planning experience and being so responsive! The food and drinks were awesome! Yes, the bride and groom did get a chance to eat! We got a lot of compliments from our guests about the food and drinks as well :) Overall, we had an amazing experience here and wish we could relive our special day! Thank you to the team at Franciscan Gardens and 24 Carrots for making that happen.

Made a couple of recommendations for lunch, but we saw the steak frites and well, I'm always down for a good steak frites. We also tried the fig bruschetta. This was delicious, though I was hoping for real figs instead of a fig jam. But it all worked nicely with the cheese, arugula, and balsamic. The steak came out and was very tender and had an herb butter that was soooooo good! I loved the salad that came with, spring mix with strawberries, blueberries and dried cranberries. I also like putting the butter on the fries....soooo good! We chose the Trestles Tempranillo and it was the perfect pairing with everything! They have a dog menu and Cako got a chicken and rice bowl, which she loved. The patio is a great place on a sunny day. They do have umbrellas and a covered area but it's all very pleasant. We were provided event restroom rentals (limited restroom access inside the buildings) and guest parking is at a lower level of the property in which you are shuttled up. To get to the reception location itself, you'll have to drive Ortega Highway (74) and turn east into their gated property entrance which is very close to Caspers. Once you enter the gated property, you'll be guided via caravan up the 5 miles of dirt road to the beautiful reception area. The dirt road drive is about 20 minutes from Ortega Hwy so keep in mind. The previous venue manager was very flexible with our requests and everyone we worked with on the approved vendor list was incredible and excited to go back to The Jewel, although we did appreciate that we had the option to choose others too. A month before the wedding, said manager left the venue and we were so nervous about how the transition to the new manager Sally and her team would go, especially as we were planning a DIY wedding from abroad and had only visited the venue twice. The handover was absolutely seamless and turned out better than we could have ever imagined - which is a testament to the ownership. Cate is professional, responsive, and genuinely collaborative. Communication is clear. Load-in is organized. The space is clean and well maintained. When a venue runs this smoothly, it reduces friction for vendors and creates a better experience for clients and guests. That kind of operational competence doesn't happen by accident. The design is what makes this venue distinct. The short-throw projectors transform the walls into a fully immersive aquarium or fishbowl environment. It's not a novelty effect; it's a production tool. For weddings, the room can feel atmospheric and romantic. For corporate events, branded visuals wrap the space in a way that feels custom and high-end. Few venues at this size offer that level of visual flexibility. From an audio standpoint, the room performs extremely well. We run MagiCali, a Southern California mobile DJ company specializing in weddings and corporate events, and we evaluate every room through a production lens. We look at ceiling height, wall material, reflection patterns, power distribution, and how low-end energy travels across a dancefloor. We've worked in luxury ballrooms, outdoor coastal venues, private estates, and converted industrial spaces. The Fish Tank is one of the rare venues where you don't have to compensate for the room. Speeches are articulate and easy to understand. Dinner music sits comfortably without overwhelming conversation. When it's time to transition into dancing, the room holds energy evenly instead of creating hot spots or dead zones. That tells you the space was built and tuned with care. For clients, that technical quality translates into confidence. You don't have to worry about muddy sound during toasts or harsh reflections once the music turns up. The venue supports the event instead of fighting it. There are many event spaces in Orange County. Very few combine strong visual identity, flexible projection capability, solid acoustics, and hands-on ownership. The Fish Tank is an undiscovered gem, and for what Cate currently charges, it represents exceptional value. It would not be surprising to see this venue commanding significantly higher rates in the near future. If you're planning a wedding, private celebration, or corporate event in Dana Point or Capistrano Beach, this space deserves serious consideration. It's distinctive, technically sound, and professionally run -- exactly the kind of venue that allows a well-executed event to shine.

One of the most generous touches was allowing us to use her home for staging the bride and groom. That level of trust and hospitality meant so much to our family. Throughout the entire process, she was accommodating, helpful, and always available with a calm, reassuring presence. If you are looking for a venue with heart, creativity, and an owner who truly cares, this is it. We are so grateful for everything she did to make the celebration unforgettable.
