This whitewashed inn accessed over an old packhorse bridge claims to 'probably' be Yorkshire's oldest (1307). Got to love them covering themselves for inaccuracy there. That's over seven centuries of beery goodness which was open for trade 40 years before the Black Death! A gem of a building with wooden beams throughout - the layout inside is stepped as it's built on a decline so disabled access is obviously limited (you may wish to phone in advance if you or your family member has any mobility concerns). There's plenty of seating throughout, however, with some set back in nooks in the walls. As well as serving real ale from independent brewers, they stock genuine imported lagers from around the world. Their fridge of bottled beers looked quite comprehensive. They also have guest beers which change regularly - when I visited they had Jaipur from Thornbridge on (one of my all time favourites). They serve food but we didn't eat here on this occasion. I can guarantee I will be a punter here again when I'm over next time.

The service was excellent and the girl was very chatty as this is such a small community. In the evenings this place turns into more of a fine dining restaurant- I've seen pictures on the Internet and the food looks really nice so I'll have to come back for a meal sometime. I hadn't eaten lunch, but they were only serving cakes and tea, since it was after 4, they said. So I ordered a scone AND crumpets, lol. Scones here are huge and one was more than enough for my whole lunch. I couldn't even finish the whole thing. And it was really really good. They were mopping the floor upstairs to get ready to close at 5 and the place smelled like old mop water, but the girl let me open the side door right next to my table and then it was good. Being boring we decided to eat inside the plaice (see what I did there?) and we both opted for the same food namely jumbo haddock,chips and mushy peas,or to give it's real name,food of the mythical sky beings.... Large haddock said the menu,and bloody large it was too,it was hanging over the side of the plate large.It was also really,really lovely,the batter was crispy and bubbly in equal measure and the fish inside was soft,flaky and tasty. The chips did indeed taste of chips and the mushy peas were also of the top notch variety. Grandma pollard also sells home made pies (none of that Hollands mush) and their own cakes,and even though we were incredibly stuffed from our fish feast we decided to get a couple of pies and a brick sized vanilla slice to take home with us,all of which were very nice,especially the vanilla slab!! I am now very happy because i've found a proper chippy that is not too far away from home,and at the end of the day that's what's important in life,a proper chippy!!
