Ah the joys of Mother's Day. Wait - that was LAST week. Never mind. My nearly 20 year old daughter…read morewasn't home last week, so the celebrations were postponed until today. Darling daughter kindly offered to take her mother (me) for lunch. After much deliberation, we decided to wander not too terribly far from home to Piazza Firenze. I'd never been before. We arrived at about 1.30 on a Saturday afternoon. There were a couple of small family groups by the big picture window (which was fully open, as it was a fabulous day) with small and impatient children. We therefore chose to sit near the back. At the back were some challenged and rather noisy adults, but neither they nor the toddlers were the restaurant's fault. The place wasn't busy (the glorious day may have something to do with that). We were given menus and asked what we'd like to drink quite quickly. They have a wine list, plus some spirits and beers, though both of us stuck with water. The menu is not extensive, but nor is it tiny. It has starters, salads, pasta, pizza and main courses. Both my daughter and I opted for pizza - she had a Margarita, and I had a pizza with Italian sausage and bacon (it was supposed to come with egg; I asked to have that omitted - as a New Yorker, egg on pizza for me is just wrong). The pizzas did take a bit of time to arrive, despite the lack of many customers. My pizza was ok. The sausage and bacon were quite salty, and I'd have liked the base cooked a bit more. Also, and this is a common complaint from me about pizzas in Britain, it could have done with some herbs - oregano, basil - that kind of thing. As it was, it was really the topping that provided the flavour. I had a wee taste of my daughter's pizza. The crust was nicer on that one, and the tomato tasted fresher, but again, it could have done with seasoning. The bill came to under £20, as all we had were two pizzas, with no drinks or sides. The pizzas ranged in price from around £7 to around £10, as did the pasta dishes. The main courses (sea bass, steak, that kind of thing) were more expensive - perhaps half again as much. The decor is fairly bare - wooden floors, plain table and chairs. Fortunately, they are not too close together, so you will not be rubbing elbows with all and sundry. However, all the hard surfaces means the sound really does carry. There is a small garden/terrace out back with tables and chairs, though we did not venture out there. The pizza oven is in the back, so you can see your pizza being cooked and delivered. All in all, I'd say this is not a bad place for families, but I would hesitate to recommend it for an intimate, adult dinner for two.

A colleague and I went for lunch here and it was just the perfect lovely day - the sun was out, it wasn't too hot and we got window seats. I had the Penne Romana (regular size for £7.50) and it was a generous, delicious portion. The pasta was al dente (just the way I like it), the sauce was OH so rich with a touch of cream (as promised), the chicken bits (and sausage bits?) were juicy and the cheese toppers tasted smoky and fragrant - it truly completed the dish. So amazing. My colleague had two lunch starters - the Portobello Mushroom w/ spinach and gorgonzola (£3) and the fried calzone with mozzarella, spinach and ricotta (£3.25). Both were good, however the calzone was a bit bland. The breading for the calzone reminded me of a Chinese doughnut - slightly chewy and smelled buttery (yum). Service was quick and very pleasant. This place was about a block from my work so that's quite dangerous. I'm gonna tell you right now, this restaurant will get me fat.

We were tucked away in a nice little corner and presented an extensive wine menu, specials and food menu. The staff were nice, giving us enough attention and space appropriately. We selected goats cheese tartlet and stuffed sardines. Unfortunately we were a little disappointed with the starters. The goats cheese tartlet turned out to be a breaded deep fried goats cheese slice on top of layer of soggy uncooked puff pasty with cooked shallot underneath. The special happened to be deep fried goats cheese, so we felt like out option was actually just that rather than an actual tartlet. The sardines were okay, but not what I'd imagined. My main was delicious. A large portion of lamb shoulder, beautiful cooked, it fell off the bone. Accompanied by a lovely Aubergine dish with olives and pine nuts. The red wine jus was overly strong though. My dates main wasn't quite as good. He had roasted pork belly and gratin potatoes. It was was a large portion of meat but a bit dry and a lot of fat. Also we both felt that the waiter should have asked if he wanted any vegetables on the side. It seemed strange for a meat and potato dish not to automatically come with any vegetables. We selected a lovely bottle of Sicilian red wine, which was delicious and decently priced too. We weren't offered any water though, which was a shame as it's nice when it's assumed you'd like some water with your meal as well as wine. £80 in total for two cocktails, starters, mains and a lovely bottle of wine. All in all a nice meal and evening, but simple things could make the experience a lot better.

I found Adesso on Yelp, we left our airbnb and were on the move to find it. After finding a place to park, we walked the few blocks over. Immediately we were greeted to be helped and since the inside smelled a little bit like cigarette smoke to us, we opted to keep our jackets on and sit outside in the brisk English air. The waiter who took care of us was incredibly attentive and kind. While he spoke Italian and we spoke English, we made it work and were able to order an amazing meal: garlic bread, burrata (for me, my friend does not love cheese), spaghetti pomodoro and a nicely breaded, thin, perfectly cooked and simple piece of chicken. Then, I finished the evening with a mocha for myself. While we have no science supporting this, we believe this meal was the most perfect fuel for her race the next day - as she completed the 100 miles in under 20 hours, approximately 7 hours before she anticipated she would. Until we find ourselves back in Richmond, we will take with us the fond memory; When we are next in Richmond, Adesso will be our first culinary stop.
