Anyways, enough of my meat nostalgia, Premier Meats is a small yet brilliant butchers tucked away up on Castle Street. They have all the usual cuts plus a whole section of marinated specials which always look delicious and are pretty well priced. The guys who work there are really pleasant and always are offering advice either to do with the preparation of the meat or a predicted football score. Quality stuff. Pros: Great service, good quality meats. Cons: A bit off the beaten track.

The guy serving seemed friendly and certainly wasn't pushing for me to make a decision while I pondered what to buy close to closing time. My 5 yr old wanted sausages so I bought half a dozen each of pork, pork & leek and beef. On cooking there wasn't too much fat coming out of them, skins stayed intact and the meat was nice and juicy. The whole family enjoyed eating them but the beef was a clear winner. As I try more products I'll update this review but first impressions are good.

It's a family run place, and the staff are really friendly, and enjoy a good bit of chat or a joke with their clientele. One of only a couple of Butchers on the Antrim Road, Stanley's has the market cornered. During BBQ season the place is buzzing with people rushing to get their burgers and chicken breasts and steaks before that elusive sunshine disappears and at Christmas there is a list of people who have ordered turkeys in advance queuing outside to get their festive birds and hams. The quality of the meat is very good, and Stanley will order things in if you ask for them, but it is sometimes a little pricey compared to some other butchers I've tried, and he could try being a little more competitive by putting on more offers or discounts. But maybe he doesn't need to, as the place is always busy.

It's just a let down once you've tried them from here. Same goes for their chili sausages. The same probably goes for everything they sell. Stuck in the middle of a wide variety of old-looking shops is a fantastic little butchers, one which should (but never will) blow every supermarket and chain store out of the water. With every cut of meat you could possibly want, this place had a queue of about ten people waiting to get served. Anywhere else that would be deemed bad service and you would complain. However, a long queue in a butchers is a healthy thing because it shows that people trust it first and foremost, and don't mind paying over the odds for some great food. I would definitely recommend it, not solely because it sells some really top quality meat (especially the steaks) but because it is much better to support local produce rather than processed rubbish that gets shipped in from somewhere dark and dingy.

They have a massive selection of meats including the usual chicken, pork, lamb, beef as well as other stuff that you may not expect from a butchers. You can get every day meals like a whole chicken ready prepared with potatoes and veg - just shove it in the oven and 2 hours later you've got a family dinner. There's also chicken gougons, stuffed chicken breasts and chicken stir fries ready done with veg and sauces. The beef is fantastic and only comes from one farm in County Tyrone which uses the most animal welfare conscious methods possible. I think that's important these days and I also think the beef tastes all the better for it. Quite often if we're entertaining, I buy the main course from McGees. I don't actually lie and say I have made it myself, but if no-one asks, I sure ain't telling. I have done stuffed pork fillet and rack of lamb which come beautifully prepared and just go straight in the oven. To complete your meal, whether a week day tea or a dinner party, McGees also do lush little garlic potatoes, chilli potatoes and packs of stir fry veg. Prices are great too, for example the complete chicken dinner is £7 which you really couldn't beat by making it all from scratch yourself.

The steaks and other meat cuts are the best in Newtownards which explains why the shop is always busy. A very friendly feeling greets you as you enter and they will suggest the right pieces for a dinner party or just a Wednesday night stew. I remember being in recently and after discussing the diet with the butchers they recommended how to cook the pork chops I was buying to cut the fat content.
