I recently had the privilege and honor of spending three glorious days, well into the evening, at…read morethis court house serving jury duty. Before Monday, I had been called for jury duty (JD) one other time and we were dismissed due to lack of cases. I was not so lucky this time. Some basics: when you get your summons, you will have a number that you are assigned. This will be your number throughout the process, so don't forget it. Check the JP website the night before to see if you have to report. Parking: the parking garage is convenient and easy and your parking will be validated, so park there for easy access. I suggest getting there a little early to avoid the line going in, especially on busier days. Once you get there you will check in and then you just sit and wait for your name to be called. If you're lucky, you'll be called fast or dismissed. I was called immediately and I headed upstairs. The first trial I was a going to be a possible juror for was a criminal trial. After about two hours of group questioning, I was dismissed and sent back downstairs to wait to be called again. The jury I was actually picked for was a civil trial that lasted two solid days. Lucky me. More on that in a minute. On the day I was waiting to find out if I was going to be chosen, we were given 15 minutes to get something at the snack bar, eat it and get back to the jury pool room. Apparently, it was a busy day at the JP courthouse. The snack bar has a few sandwiches and other snacks, but if you can bring your own food, that will be even better. The actual serving of jury duty was okay. My judge was super cool and gave us lots of breaks, brought in breakfast and lunch and our jury "lounge" was packed with candy, coffee, soft drinks, water, chips, fruit, cookies and other goodies. The bailiffs really did the best they could to make the experience as comfortable as possible for us and constantly checked in to make sure that we had everything that we needed. There's WiFi in the jury room and you can have your phone as long as you aren't in the courtroom or deliberating on a verdict (this might have been just because I had a civil case, though. I'm not sure how criminal cases work with internet access). If you get picked, expect some long days. I didn't get out until after 7 on all three days that I was there. The worst part of the entire experience was the constant sitting around and not really moving. It does get boring after a while, especially when you are waiting for lawyers and other involved people to show up, so bring a book or other form of entertainment and bring a sweater because the courtroom gets really cold and bring your own snacks if you have dietary issues. When all is said and done you'll get a fancy certificate thanking you for your service, so feel free so show that to the jerk who you said you would never make anything of your life.

In the middle of debauchery and mayhem, the grandest court stands in its esteemed state of…read moreperfection. The Supreme Court of Louisiana is both gorgeous outside, as well as, inside. Nestled literally in the middle of The French Quarter. It's an odd place to be, but given the fact that this is kind of the oldest places in the United States, (300 years old) it makes sense that debauchery and law would reside next to one another. Tours are given often, but tourists are allowed to walk some of the halls, and view numerous rooms. You'll be greeted by gentlemen with badges who mean business. Bring your ID, or you won't be allowed psst the front door. They'll literally " run" your ID, snap your picture, and give you a paper name tag to wear while in the building. The name tag is cool, since they put your picture on it. Cell phones are not permitted in the building. When court is in full session, visitors aren't permitted to tour through the building, and it's heavily discouraged for them to enter the building. If you do, you'll hear someone utter here comes the judge ... If you're looking for something educational, history filled, interesting, and not included in the tour packages of cemetery places, make a point of stopping in.

I wish I had known about this library when I was in school, this would have been an ideal place to come spread out and study. I do love a nice quiet place to study. As mentioned in a previous review, they do have small study rooms to use, which I love. The librarians are friendly, and I have never had an issue with anyone here. You can request items from other branches to be picked up here, which is nice. The parking lot is on the small side, but this is a small branch of the library. I really like coming here.

There's really not much more to say about Wagner Library, except for one cool discovery that I made in here. This library has tiny rooms with a desk, outlets, and a door. Between these private, underutilized spaces and the free wifi, I thought, "Hey, I could make this into an office." And that's what I did. All was moving along swimmingly. I was Yelping, I was Facebooking. I was Tweeting. And then I realized my office was lacking one crucial detail. I needed an assistant to bring me lattes and things. So I looked around, found the meekest looking person in that joint (not hard. this *is* a library), and started barking orders. "Thelma!" (Actually, I'm not sure what my assistant's name was, but I'm writing the checks here, so I can call her what I want, right? Well, technically, I'm not writing checks. Thelma is doing more of an internship, but this internship will be *great* experience (with college credit!), so I don't feel obligated to get into semantic arguments with you on this, ok? So anyway...) "Thelma, go get me a grande non-fat soy chai latte with a half shot of espresso extra hot...Thelma, go get me some of those Zuckerberg-style business cards that say 'I'm CEO, bitch' on them...Thelma, order me a gold-plated placard that says 'Do not disturb. Yelping in progress.'...Thelma, go get me some sexy panties for my date with Sergio tonight." Thelma did not budge. And that's where my experience at the Wagner Library went sour. You really cannot find good help these days. I offered this woman a huge opportunity to further her career and guess what? Nothing. The library was fine, my office was nice, but do not go to Wagner Library hoping to find a decent assistant.

The newest Jefferson Parish library branch as been open about 5 months now. It's an airy modern…read morelooking facility with a good size children's section that has plenty of scheduled activities for the little ones. I haven't been there yet for the movie nights. The adult side is roomy with plenty of room to add more shelving when needed. There is a large computer area with Internet access and free wi-fii available throughout the building. There are a pair of study rooms as well as a meeting room. As you suspect for a newly built public building it very handicapped accessible. It is a nice addition to the parish library system.

Not actually a lighthouse but it still counts. Built in 1924, this was originated as a workshop for…read morethe blind. Today, it's an event space that is available for pop-up shops and art shows. The architecture and design is a complete novelty - there are no ships here in danger of running aground on Camp Street even though the rotating light still works. The architect of the lighthouse was Emile Weil, who also designed the Saenger Theatre. Oscar Gwin Jr. was in charge of construction. The lighthouse portion of the building was modeled after the Milneburg lighthouse, located on the UNO campus where Pontchartrain Beach amusement park was located. I attended a Dinner Lab event in this building last night. And I think the owners are trying to…read moremarket themselves as an event space. The public space is airy and inviting. There is a small room in the lighthouse portion of the building that is accessible. There was also an really nice 2nd story outdoor deck. The space does seem to still be a work in progress. There was room filled with junk that was visible from the main space via windows. The bathroom door either stuck or wouldn't close and there's only 1 which is an issue at a dinner for 50 people. But it's such an interesting space that I hope they can make it work. It's been featured on Roadside America because it's such an unusual building. The lighthouse was added to a boring old building in 1924 when this spot became the Lighthouse for the Blind...which hasn't been here for decades. Most recent business that I can remember was the lighthouse glass studio. So fingers crossed that they can make a go of it...

This place is a gorgeous bit of mid century architecture. I love libraries, plain and simple but I…read morego out of my way to spend time here. As far as space usability, this place is on par with other universities. The book stacks are less. The technology is more present and the space is more welcoming of an evolving culture. There are spaces for gathering. Plenty of study rooms. The first floor is for conversations, traffic, groups and snacks at the coffee bar. It's a home away from home for graduate students. So yeah, we like it pretty well.

I'll admit, with the volume of material that a library has, it is understandable for a library to…read morebe a bit of a labyrinth, but navigation Howard Tilton for that molding book on Easter Island or African Diaspora is too much of an adventure for my taste. Their catalog is straightforward enough, but the book rows are all over the place and sometimes difficult to follow. Not to mention the fact that the majority of the stacks are in low-ceiling, basement like spaces, giving one the sense that they are in the opening ghost scene from "Ghostbusters." Also, for a library building, Howard Tilton is rather noisy. Of course, people will chitchat as they do, but the HVAC units are constantly roaring and the staircases echo like anything. If you get a couch seat on the third floor while the sun is still up, then I'll admit, it makes for a lovely reading space. Also... thank the good lord they put a PJ's coffee inside!
